accomplished to help these deserving students with their future education. At our Scholarship Dinner, we will be electing our new officers for next year. The nominating committee has made up a proposed slate which is included in this newsletter but we encourage all members especially new members to volunteer on committees and run for office. We will be asking for nominations from the floor at our April meeting. The nominee must be present at the April meeting to be nominated. Installations of officers will take place at our June meeting. It has been my pleasure to serve the chapter as your President and I know I will be leaving it in good hands. Please volunteer -remember our motto “Service above Self”. Yours in Unico, Joanne D’Angelo, President My Fellow Unicans, Spring has finally sprung! Let’s use the excitement that the warm, sunny weather is giving off to help out on Earth Day Saturday, April 26. We will be meeting in the Sears parking lot at 8:30 a.m. to receive gloves, bags, water and a voucher for a free Frankies lunch after we clean up the Veterans Memorial Park on Thomaston Avenue from 9a.m. to noon. We will be having an interesting speaker at our April meeting, Greg Potamis, which will be speaking on Cooley’s Anemia. Cooley’s Anemia also called Thalassemia affects many people from Italy and Asia. Unico National has always been a major sponsor for Cooley’s Anemia Research at St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. In fact, I have visited St. Jude’s Hospital and Unico National has a large special plaque honoring our organization for all its help over the years. Exciting gene research at St. Jude’s is pointing to a possible cure very soon. I am very excited about our Scholarship Program. This year we have received 29 applications for our local scholarships and I am happy to say we have a National Study Abroad Scholarship Winner, Zachary Paul Longo. Our Chapter has also sponsored Joe Stango for a National Americanism Award for his work on the program for seniors “Dora’s Hope—Choice Centered Medicaid”. I am proud to say Mr. Stango has won the Grand Patriot Award which will be presented at the National Convention in Florida. I encourage all our members to attend our Scholarship Dinner on Tuesday, May 27 th at the Aria in Prospect and be proud of these very intelligent students and all the fundraiser work we have Waterbury UNICO PO Box 933—Waterbury, CT 06721 www.WaterburyUNICO.com [email protected]www.Facebook.com/WaterburyUNICO April 2014 WATERBURY CHAPTER OF UNICO NATIONAL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER Note From President Upcoming Events Tuesday—April 22nd: Dinner Meeting at Juniper’s Restaurant– 6:30pm—$25.00 [Guest Speaker Greg Potamis to share information regarding the NYC Cooley’s Anemia Foundation] Saturday—April 26th: Day of Service at Veterans Memorial Park—9:00am– 12noon Tuesday– May 13th: Board of Directors Meeting at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Hall—6:45pm Tuesday—May 27th: Meeting, Elections & Scholarship Dinner at Aria—6:00pm—$30.00
