• The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle or the H2O cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth

Water cycle

- First, water on the earth, in lakes, in oceans and in the sea is evaporated by the heat from the Sun

- Excess water from plants is also absorbed into the atmosphere, this proccess is called transpiration- Then, water collects as water vapor in the sky. This makes clouds- Next, the water in the clouds gets cold. This makes it become liquid

again- Then, the water falls from the sky as rain, snow, sleet, or hail which is

called precipitation- The water then collects into lakes, oceans, or aquifers. From there, it

evaporates again and continues the cycle

• World Water Day has been observed on 22 March since 1993 when the United General Assembly declared 22 March as „World Day for Water”

• The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing UN reccommendations and promoting concrete activities within their contries regarding the world’s water resources

• Water conservation means to reduce the use of water• This can be done by finding ways to reuse water• To ensure availability for future generations, the withdrawal of

fresh water from an ecosystem should not exceed its natural replacement rate

• Energy conservation: Water pumping, delivery and waste water treatment facilities consume a significant amount of energy. In some regions of the world over 15% of total electicity consumption is devoted to water managment

• Habitat conservation: Minimizing human water use helps to preserve fresh water habitats for local wildlife and migrating waterfowl, as well as reducing the need to build new dams and other water diversion infrastructures.

• Krka is a river in Croatia’s Dalmatia region, noted for its numerous waterfalls

• 73 km long and its basin covers an area of 2,088 km2

• Before its outflow the river forms beautiful and well known waterfalls called Skradinski bul, part of Krka National Park

• This area is also the location of the first hydroelectric power station using alternate current in Croatia, the Jaruga Hydroelectric Power Plant.

• This plant started supplying power to the nearby city of Šibenik in 1895

• Its present location dates back to 1903• First hydro power plant in Europe and second in the world, 3

days after the Adams Power Plant on Niagara Falls • It was designed to power the street lights in Šibenik, making

it the third city in the world with street lights• In 1893, the mayor of Šibenik, Ante Šupuk and one Vjekoslav

Meichser started a business and obtained a license to use the waters of river Krka, and in 1894 they obtained permission to set up electrical power lines on municipal property in order to start lighting the streets with electric power
