There are no administrative overheads

Water for Life (Schools) is an initiative of the former Wakefield Diocese and continues

under the Diocese of Leeds.

N.B. ‘Water for Life’ is not linked to ‘WaterAid’ (which is an excellent international charity).

We have had some confusion over the two. ‘Water for Life’ is a diocesan initiative and,

unlike its global colleagues, there are no overhead costs.

Photographs and updates from Bwasi will appear on the diocesan website in due course.

This will, however be a long term project.

A Borehole for Bwasi

Dear Colleagues,

As many of you will be aware, the Diocese of Leeds has strong links with Tanzania. One of

the many specific projects where Leeds and Tanzania work together is ‘Water for Life’. In

the past schools have raised money to support specific water projects, especially around

Harvest and Christmas, although the constant reality of unclean water for millions continues to be an all year round

global issue which shames the 21st century. Following recent visits to Tanzania, alongside the horrendous drought and

subsequent food shortage, the plight of those without safe water has, once again, been highlighted.

The diocesan ‘Water for Life’ group has been raising funds and improving the lives of thousands upon thousands of

adults and children in villages and schools for many years now. ‘Water for Life : Schools’ began after a request from

schools regarding suitable charities to support, especially at Harvest. It runs alongside ‘Water for Life’, but is

particularly aimed at working with schools in the diocesan area.

Following a recent visit, one of our Water for Life colleagues, Magdalen Maguire, has undertaken to support the

development of borehole and pump in the village of Bwasi in the Mara region of Tanzania. Water for Life is also

supporting projects in other areas, but it has been decided to ask schools to support the Bwasi borehole in order to

focus on one identifiable project to which the schools can relate. The total cost of project will be in the region of

£10,000. This is a huge sum, but will impact upon the lives of thousands.

From September 2017 you will be able to access a fund raising pack for this project via the diocesan education website.

The Water for Life Committee is in touch with the people in the village and those charged with overseeing the project

(water engineers, health educators, diocesan development officers in Tanzania). This means that every penny you

send for the Bwasi project ends up supporting Bwasi, with no overheads at this end. Although progress will

undoubtedly be slow, it will be possible to see the project develop as we receive specific updates.

It is a big ask, but I believe that we can succeed. I have pledged our support for this project as, over the years to come,

thousands of people will have their lives transformed. I realise that many of you already support WaterAid, and are

therefore committed to such projects and I have no wish to get in the way. If you do feel able to support the Bwasi

project we will keep you updated, via the diocesan education website, with news and photographs as we get them.

Together we raised over £22,000 for the goat project and £18,000 for previous water projects. Through these hope

was given to many individuals and communities who now have the opportunity to support themselves and increase

family and community welfare. The Bwasi project will save lives and bring a basic human rights to thousands who, in

the 21st century, still suffer from a lack of access to clean water.

Water for Bwasi

Bwasi is a village in the north of Tanzania, in East Africa. The only water in Bwasi is in a dry field half a mile outside

the village where a little water runs in scan underground streams a few feet under the ground.

At the moment, the women of the village must crouch in a hole in the ground for two hours, collecting water drop by

drop for their families from slow spring. The women begin to queue from 2am to take their turn in a water hole.

When the big bucket is full, the woman is pulled out of the hole by the next woman in the queue - who takes off her

shoes, climbs into the hole and takes her place.

This is dangerous work. The ground is sandy and the holes can cave in at any time – but for their families to survive

the women must get into the holes every day.

Bwasi needs a deep well called a borehole.

This will cost around £10,000 – the village could never raise this money as they are subsistence farmers. Please help

this Water for Life Appeal. Every penny you give goes directly to the village to help pay for the borehole.
