Water Cycling: Consume Representation in GH

This Final Designing Associativity project is inspired by the Research Studio, ‘Self Sufficient Building’. The block we are working on is 75% empty, and we are proposing to have a water cycling system [and other additional systems] that will make the block water self-sufficient in comparison to the other blocks, and provide the natural liquid element to its inhabitants, and possibly to the neighboring blocks. The Grasshopper definition will show the difference of water flow between our block and the surrounding blocks. While the consuming and recycling of our block will be slower then the other blocks, which will keep their normal rhythm, but in comparison to our block the other blocks will spend more and faster water loads than ours.

    Natural cycle of water is also an inspiration for this project, and its metabolism con-cept will be used as the main strategy for this final assignment, and for the research studio.Two main sources of fresh water: natural (rain), and artificial (city)

    BACKGROUND :According to the Environmental Board for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, todays Bar-celona resident consumes approx. 111.4 litters of water a day versus the almost 115 litters a day spent 3 years ago. This represents a reduction of 3%.Approx. population per block: 1000 peopleLitters per person in block: 111.4 x 1000 = 111,400 litters/dayEstimate consume in our block 40% of 111,400 litters/day = 44,560 litters/dayIn Barcelona, climate presents mild winters and warm summers, with a warming trend ob-served in the 1990s. Precipitation values oscillate around 500-700 mm a year, although means and averages make little sense when considering strong inter-annual and intra-annual variations.

    BACKGROUND ::

    The Grasshopper definition will show the differ-ence of water flow between our block and the surrounding blocks. While the consuming and re-cycling of our block will be slower then the other blocks, which will keep their normal rhythm, but in comparison to our block the other blocks will spend more and faster water loads than ours. The representation of the block will be as exact as a block is, its cubical shape will be divided by sever-al boxes or cubes that will represent an amount of water in cubic litters.     PROCESS : To make a three dimensional grid of points from the x, y, and z coordinates of each point the values are cross refer-enced to generate the coordinates. This was repeated for all the existing 9 blocks.

    PROCESS :: Centre box: used to draw a three dimensional box with its centre at each point on the 3 dimensional grid generated prior.

    PROCESS ::: Vb script: used to generate the diminishing size of the boxes via scripting. When the toggle of x is set on true then the timer starts and keeps increasing the size of each cube in the individual block to show the water being con-sumed.

    PROCESS :::: Text in the VB script: here the value of the length of each side of the cube is returned at a.

    PROCESS ::::: Here the gradient tool is used to keep changing the color of the individual small cubes as the timer goes on and the size keeps increasing. This is used to make the animation more visually clear.

    PROCESS :::::: A similar process is repeated for our block (the one at the center) but here the water being used is less since the block recycles water and uses only a portion of the water supplied to it from the city of Barcelona. Thus, the size and color of each cube in our block changes a speed lesser than the other blocks surrounding it.
