Nairobi work programme (NWP) Objective

• Five year programme 2005-2010

• Objective

To assist all Parties, in particular developing countries, including the least developed countries and small island developing States to:

• improve their understanding and assessment of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change;

• make informed decisions on practical adaptation actions and measures to respond to climate change on a sound scientific, technical and socio-economic basis, taking into account current and future climate change and variability.

The Nairobi work programme aims to accomplish the following through its 9 broad areas:

• Information on needs, gaps and priority actions;

• Updates on relevant ongoing activities;

• Knowledge and information products (e.g. methods & tools, experiences, good practices, lessons learned);

• Access to expertise under the UNFCCC process.

All Parties shall “Cooperate in preparing for adaptation to the impacts of climate change; develop and elaborate appropriate and integrated plans for coastal zone management, water resources …..

The SBSTA requested the secretariat to prepare a technical paper on water and climate change impacts and adaptation strategies before its 35th session.

The NWP is jointly implemented by stakeholders including partner organizations and Parties

climate change

•To invest CHF110 million in the next 10 years in the project

• Promoting information generated under the NWP through various means (LEG, CGE etc)

• Ensuring a two way interaction with the SBI in order to inform implementation

• Ensuring linkages with the Cancun Adaptation Framework, in particular the Adaptation Committee, the NAPs and the Programme on Loss and Damage

• NWP should focus on sectoral approaches

• Establishing focal points to facilitate implementation on the ground

• Enhance engagement and collaboration among partners
