HYDROSPHERE• Water is found, within rocks below the surface, as

ice on the surface, and in the atmosphere as water vapor. • Water travels between different areas of the Earth

through the water cycle. • About 70% of the Earth surface is covered with

water, and most of that is the ocean.

FRESH WATER

• Only a small portion of the Earth's water is freshwater, which is found in rivers, lakes ,ice and groundwater

FRESH WATER USES

• Freshwater is needed for drinking, farming, and washing. In addition to liquid water, water is also present on Earth in the form of ice. Without water, life as we know it would not exist.

OCEAN CHEMISTRY

• Why is the ocean salty? When it rains on land, some of the water dissolves minerals in rocks. That water flows in rivers to the sea. It carries the minerals with it. When water evaporates back out of the ocean, it leaves the minerals behind. The minerals make sea salty water.

WEATHER

Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a given time and place. Most weather takes place in the troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere.

WATER MAKES:

Clouds • Clouds can come in all sizes and shapes, and can

form near the ground or high in the atmosphere. Clouds are groups of tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the sky and are formed by different processes. They can make different kinds of precipitation depending on the atmosphere's temperature.

CLOUD TYPES

• At any given time, clouds cover about 50% of the Earth. We would not have rain, thunderstorms, rainbows, or snow without clouds. Clouds make up some of the atmospheric optics we can see in the sky.

CLIMATE

• Water vapor is part of the water cycle and is also a Greenhouse gas .• Water in the ocean traps (stores) heat.

ICE

No matter where you live, the snow and ice of the Earth’s cryosphere has an impact on your climate. Recent changes in the cryosphere have had a major impact on global climate.

ICEBERG

• Ice is stored in large ice caps in Antarctica and Greenland.• Glaciers also make up 10% of the Earth’s surface• Glaciers can be called rivers of ice because

gravity causes them to flow slowly in a downward manner.• Some glaciers flow to the ocean and break off to

form icebergs.

WATER AND WEATHER ACTIVITY

Students will create a diagram that shows the relationship of the water cycle and weather. The diagram requirements:• Picture of the water cycling through the atmosphere

showing weather.• The picture will be labeled with the vocabulary.• Vocabulary will have explanations of what is happening.• Arrows will show and explain the traveling of the water

through the atmosphere creating weather.• Use color to more clearly show what is happening in the

diagram.
