KS Environmental supports new look

Pacific Werribee!Thursday 28th July marked the unveiling

of the exciting redevelopment of Pacific Werribee. The new mall has seen the introduction of popular multinational retail stores H&M, and Uniqlo as well as an

expanded Myer and over 40 new fashion

stores opening their doors.

There were loads of launch activities over the weekend along with exclusive offers and extended hours. It was estimated in excess of 200,000 people visited the centre over the four days!

Pacific Werribee has been under redevelopment since March 2014 and over this time has evolved to become a one-stop destination - featuring not just retail stores but also dining, entertainment and even a medical centre. Throughout this time KS Environmental has supported and worked closely with Pacific Werribee and have implemented some great new initiatives to complement this growth period.

Implementing clear signage to dock areaKS Environmental worked hard in conjunction with Pacific Werribee to improve the dock area. Clear, designated colour coded zones (Australian Standard waste colours) with matching wall and bin signage were implemented into the area to complement the new recycling services. This was also rolled out at Pacific Epping.

Implementation of new waste streamsThrough liaison with Centre management we looked at the waste generated at Pacific Werribee, and introduced some new recycling streams to supplement retail and merchandising areas including soft plastics. KS Environmental also implemented additional Commingled recycling stations in the dock areas.

Service times and schedulesBeing a major shopping centre, timings and seamless service schedules are critical for Pacific Werribee. KS Environmental works closely with them to ensure the schedules and times fit in with peak demands and guarantee smooth daily operations.

Customised reporting systemsKS Environmental in working with Pacific Group management recognised the value of improved reporting and delivered. We introduced detailed data reports, comparisons to prior periods, environmental impacts reporting and more recently detailed summary of weights by dock to allow more efficient planning and scheduling.

Liquid Waste RemovalOur liquid division is in charge of cleaning the many grease traps at both Pacific Epping and Pacific Werribee. Between the two shopping centres Eastern Liquid pumps out approx. 450,000 litres per annum.

For protection of the local sewer system and to avoid drain pipe blockages, regular and effective grease trap maintenance within a large shopping centre is absolutely crucial. Our liquid team works closely with Centre Management to ensure pump outs are on regular service schedules and operations run smoothly.

Key factors of carrying out the work for the shopping centres include the need to operate outside of shopping centre hours and due to the set up of the mall our smaller low entry vehicles are used to gain access to a lot of the grease traps.

For further information on grease trap cleaning please check out the Eastern

Liquid website easternliquid.com.au or

Giving people that SecondBite

Food waste is such as prominent issue

and after ‘source reduction’ in the Food Recovery Hierarchy the next aspect we should be concentrating on is ‘Feeding People In Need’. One amazing food rescue organisation that does just that is SecondBite.

SecondBite works by rescuing surplus fresh food that would otherwise go to landfill and redistributes this to communities and people in need.

In 2015 SecondBite delivered 7 million

kg of fresh food across Australia,

enough food for nearly 40,000 healthy nutritious meals each day for vulnerable people and their children. Unfortunately the demand for the service continues to rise. More and more Australian families are struggling to find the food for their daily and weekly meals.

To give you an idea about the environmental impact; the amount of water saved by not sending 7 million kg of food to landfill is equivalent to 273

fifty-meter Olympic swimming pools or a shower running for 18,095 days!*

On average, every kilogram of food recovered will avoid 2 kg of greenhouse gas (kg CO2-eq) emissions, and avoid the consumption of 143 litres of water.

KS Environmental feels strongly about food waste and believes landfill is unnecessary for our organic wastes. We are pleased to be able to donate our services in the way of food waste recycling collections Monday through to Friday to SecondBite. We provide 18 organic bin collections which collects the food waste that is unable to be redistributed.

There are lots of ways you can support

SecondBite, visit their website secondbite.org/ to find out more. Or if you would like to find out more about food waste recycling programs please

Sustainable thinking app for your next purchase I came across this very interesting sustainable thinking app ‘Good On You’ – which can help the consumer make informed decisions in regards to the ethical, environmental and sustainable nature of brands they are purchasing.

The Good On You app is Australian based and lists more than 3,000 clothing,

footwear and accessory brands you will find commonly in Australian shopping malls. The app was developed and is run by the charity Ethical Consumers Australia. Information sources are varied including certification schemes and other independent rating projects (more info available on the app itself).

The best way I found to use the app is to type in the name of a brand into the search function. (But it is also possible to search by category).

This then brings up the brand along with ranking out of 5 and a short synopsis. From here you can read more and see how the rankings look for the categories ‘Labour’, ‘Environment’ and ‘Animal’.

‘Labour’ encompasses aspects such as wages, policies and workers rights and

info is drawn from the 2016 Australian Fashion Report. ‘Environment’ covers off things like the environmental codes of practices (and use of hazardous dyes etc), while the ‘Animal’ ranking takes into account the materials used (obviously brands with a low ranking include ones that use fur, angora etc).

Brands that rank low also include those that do not disclose information on the three factors.

Once you have searched on a brand you can also see a list of similar brands to see how they compare and possibly select an alternative brand that ranks higher.

Another interesting aspect of the app is it gives the user the opportunity to send direct feedback to the company or brand you have selected.

Other features of the app include a news section on the home page and an offers page.

Overall I found the app very user friendly and easy to use. The information was well set out and written. I think it’s great to see something like this available for the consumer and personally I will definitely be using it more before I make my purchase decisions.

For more info on the app go to

goodonyou.org.au/app or download on

the App Store or Google Play.

IFAT Trade Fair visit 2016

This year (30th May – 3rd Jun) marked

the 50th anniversary of the IFAT expo

– the world’s leading trade fair for

environmental technologies. IFAT started out back in 1966 with 147 exhibitors and 10,200 visitors and this year housed 3,097

exhibitors and around 138,000 visitors from all over the world.

Our Managing Director Paul Smith and Engineering Services Manager Darren Souter were among the crowds. They spent three days taking in the sights and innovations at the large scale event and an additional day touring the impressive MARTIN Waste to Energy Plant.

Highlights of the event for both Paul and

Darren included:

• Seeing how waste technologies have progressed and the realisation that Australia is not too far behind in many areas and in some even striving ahead. As far as mobile compactors go Australia seems to be the world leaders in light weight equipment that is not overly complicated.

• One new technology that stood out

were recycling separation machines capable of separating different coloured glass, paper and card board, and plastics at very, very fast speeds.

• Meeting the new owners of the Wastedge system – this was timely as the KS Environmental Group has recently moved across to this platform. It was great to be able to meet up in person and express and share viewpoints and obtain a clear picture of what the goals and objectives are going forward for the Australasia region.

Technologies big in Europe at the moment seem to be waste to energy and emerging bin identification and weighing systems. With regards to the ‘waste to energy’ sector, this is something that Europe is a long way ahead of Australia in but for many reasons including density of population and the heating demand where waste for energy may be utilised is not as great in Australia as in Europe.

One particular take home item that the company looks forward to getting involved in is a new mud dehydrating system for our liquid treatment plant (OES). This system will process the drilling muds from industries like the NBN roll out and rail crossing removal programs under way in Melbourne.

We will keep you posted as the project moves forward!
