More Massacres!

Over the past year, as cameras

turned away, the Bahraini regime car-

ried out some o the worst atrocities in

its history. Much like the brutal killing

o Khaled Saeed under police torture,

an incident that ignited the ury in

the Egyptian street leading up to the

25 January revolution, systematic tor-

ture in Bahrain has become common

place. Many protesters are beaten,

jailed, tortured and continue to die in

police custody. Two activists, Yousi

Almuwali and Muntathar Fakhar, have

died in custody this past January alone.

Similar to Egyptian state security ab-

ricating Khaled Saeeds orensic exam-

ination report to make the claim that

he had died because he swallowed a

packet o marijuana, the Bahraini Min-

istry o Interior claims that those who

were tortured to death in custody died

o sickle-cell anemia, when they were

actually healthy prior to their arrests.

Despite the similarities between the

state securitys crackdown on protest-

ers in Bahrain and other Arab upris-

ings, the ormer is oten overlooked.

The reason lies in how Arab media, spe-

cifcally Gul-owned satellite channels,

have justifed this crackdown on ac-

tivists by inaccurately portraying the

Bahraini uprising as an Iran-backed

Shia insurrection against Sunni rulers.

This is, o course, a misrepresentation

o the whole story, since the uprising

initially called or reorming the sys-

tem o governance through establish-

ing a constitutional monarchy. It was

only ater security orces killed and

maimed people on the streets that the

protesters demands naturally rose, as

they did everywhere else, to eventually

call or the downall o the regime. But,

o course, the oreign conspiracy card,

maniested in the claim pertaining to

Irans tampering in Bahrains domes-

tic aairs, has been conveniently used

by the regime to delegitimize the up-

rising. Arab tyrants, Mubarak among

them, were quick to resort to this or-

eign threat propaganda in order to sus-

tain their authoritarian rule. (thanks

Reliable news sources have report-

ed incidences o patient torture in

Syrian hospitals, primarily military

hospitals in the Homs area. As these

reports are circulated worldwide

they are likely to provoke responses

rom NATO, China and Russia, as well

as the U.S. which has thus ar shown

great restraint in becoming involved

in Syrian aairs ollowing the unex-

pected outcomes in Egypt and Libya.

We have to wonder i the reports o

hospital patients, even those in inten-

sive care units, chained to beds, blind-

olded and tortured, are plausible.

MSNBC News is in possession o

video provided by an anonymous hos-

pital employee and broadcast on Brit-

ains Channel 4 News which includes

photos o a rubber whip and an elec-

trical cable on a table in one hospital

room. The witness appears to have

risked his lie to bring evidence o

torture by civilian and military sur-

geons and some nurses. The alleged

torture took place in the ambulance

section, the prison ward and the the

radiologyy department, as well as the

intensive care unit.

The witness, who reported the

shameul things said he tried to

stop them, and was branded a traitor.

Speaking to a French photojournalist

who was also at risk, he said:

I have seen detainees being tor-

tured by electrocution, whipping,

beating with batons, and by breaking

their legs. They twist the eet until

the leg breaks. They perorm opera-

tions without anesthetics. I saw them

slamming detainees heads against

walls. They shackle the patients to

beds. They deny them water. Others

have their penises tied to stop them

rom urinating.

The witness provided the names o

many who worked hand in glove with

Syrian soldiers and the Mukhabarat

secret police.

The United Nations Human Rights

Commission o Inquiry has veriied

the reports, and also reers to slaugh-

ter, throats being cut and bodies in

large numbers in the streets. The

commission has recommended to the

UN Security Council that the Syrian

regime be reerred to the Interna-

tional Criminal Court. United Na-

tions Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon

announced he was receiving grisly

reports o summary executions, ar-

bitrary detentions and torture rom

Homs. China and Russia continue to

condemn the violence, but remain

hesitant to remove their veto block

rom NATO orces.

The witness who provided the

ootage to the British press claimed

that many o the victims, including

a young man o iteen who was tor-

tured by ire, were civilians, although

some at the Homs Military Hospital

were regime soldiers who reused to

ollow orders. He said some o the vic-

tims had nothing to do with the dem-

onstrations.
