Caitlyn Jenner’s debut triggers mixed reaction, from Obama praise to right-wing mocking By MICHAEL K. LAVERS [email protected]Vanity Fair on Monday released the cover of its July issue in which Caitlyn Jenner publicly presents herself as a woman for the first time. The cover features a picture of Jenner shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz. A 22-page story written by Buzz Bissinger that accompanies the cover details the struggles the former Olympian experienced during her transition from a man i nto a woman that include a panic attack the day after undergoing facial surgery. The article — titled “Call Me Caitlyn” — also contains additional photos of Jenner that Leibovitz took. LGBT rights advocates were quick to applaud Jenner. “For a transgender person to step into the world as his or her authentic self is a moment of tremendous freedom,” said GLAAD Director of Programs for Transgender Media Nick Adams. “The world can now see what Caitlyn Jenner has always known, that she is — and always has been — a woman.” O’Malley, Graham announce White House bids By CHRIS JOHNSON [email protected]Another week, another crop of presidential hopefuls. The 2016 election is nearly a year and a half away but candidates from both parties continue to announce their campaigns in an increasingly crowded field. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley entered the race on Saturday, announcing he will challenge front-runner Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. Standing before supporters in Federal Hill Park on a sweltering May morning, O’Malley declared he was running for president in the city where he served as mayor from 1999 to 2007 and the state where he served as governor from 2007 until this year. “The story of our country’s best days is not found in a history book, because this generation of Americans is about to write it,” O’Malley said. “And that is why today, to you, and to all who can hear my voice, I declare that I am a candidate J U NE 05 2 0 15 V O L U ME 4 6 I SSUE 2 3 • AMERICA’S GAY NEWS SOURCE • WASHINGTONBLADE.COM MARTIN O’MALLEYannounced his long-shot bid for the White House last weekend.
