Washington State Horsemen e-Canter
Happy New Year Everyone! What a year 2020 was. With COVID and
gathering restrictions, I’m wondering how many of your 2020
resolutions were accomplished. Well this year's resolu-tion for me
as WSH President is to help get all our major divisions back up and
running and having a somewhat normal show season. Let’s keep doing
our part in keeping ourselves safe as well as those we love so that
2021 is a much better year for all of us and we can get back into
the arena.
As a reminder, it is time to send in your 2021 dues. The 2021
membership forms are available on the WSH website if you are
joining non-club. Those that are club members are encouraged to
contact their Club Secretary ASAP to arrange for payment and
renewal. This year’s dues are the same as last year and are an
incredible bargain for 12 months of fun! Your continued sup-port of
WSH is truly appreciated!
Although we were not able to meet in person for the 2020 WSH
Annual Convention, I want to thank those that attended virtually!
The ability to do so from the comfort of our front rooms made
attendance so easy. It was wonderful seeing so many faces on the
Zoom calls! Addition-ally, the Games Division was able to host an
in-person division meeting, luncheon and awards. A big “thank you”
to Melissa Stockman for the loan of her indoor arena for the event.
I would also like to thank Jessie McLaughlin for coordinating the
Zoom meetings for the weekend. The hope is to be able to meet again
in person for the 2021 WSH Convention. The hotel we had originally
scheduled for 2020 was so gracious to roll our deposit over and
honor all of the pric-ing so that we can hold this year’s
convention on November 12-14 in Spokane at the Airport Ramada
Inn.
At Sunday’s meeting, Terri Lehnertz was elected as Vice
President. The following Zone Direc-tors were ratified as well -
Kamie McDowell (Cascade), Terri Lehnertz (Northeast), Stephanie
Price (Prairie - 1 Year Term), Teri Blair (Puget Sound), and Bonnie
Schuchman (Zone One). Staying on for the completion of this year’s
term as Zone Directors are Tammy Call-Jones (Canal), Arlene
Marquart (North Central), and Kelvin Plagerman (Northwest
Border).
At the January Board Meeting, we hope to ratify the following
members to the positions listed: Jessie McLaughlin (Treasurer), TBA
(Olympic Zone Director), TBA (Enforcement), Mary Brady
(Historical), Shane Laib (Legislative), Kamie McDowell
(Membership), Jessie McLaughlin (Publications / East Side Youth
Merit Chair), Tammy Call-Jones (West Side Zone Coordinator), Cheryl
Hayward (West Side Youth Merit Chair), Gloria Marley (Awards),
Jessie McLaughlin (Convention), and Mary Jane Lowry (Royalty).
We still have some openings on the WSH Board if you are
interested in serving and learning more about this great
organization we belong to! Please contact me should you have an
interest in being a part of our amazing team. Washington State
Horsemen is the only multi-discipline, multi-generational equine
organization in the State of Washington. Be sure to invite your
friends and those you come in contact with to join WSH. New members
(for 2021) can join their ENTIRE FAMILY for the cost of an
individual membership! I look forward to seeing all of your posts
on Facebook on what you do this winter to keep your horse in shape!
2021 is only going to get better with the members working together
by making it a safe and fun year! See you real soon -- Emma
McLaughlin, President.

GAMES DIVISION
From Division Director, Melissa Stockman, “We are just days from
end of 2020 as I
write this message. I know that I am not the only one that can't
wait until it is over!
What will 2021 bring? We are still wondering this across the
State. I will provide up-
dates as I get them...show dates, available arenas, etc. We were
able to host shows last
year and we learned a lot along the way on how to keep our
riders safe and COVID free
so we are looking forward to a successful 2021 as well. I do
know that we had a few
members take advantage of Zoom clinics that were offered in
November and December
to help them along their journey to becoming certified
officials. Thank you to those that
did...it makes shows easier to put on with more officials. Our
"Convention" was held
unconditionally and well attended as were our awards ceremony.
If you did receive a
check, please be sure to cash it so our Treasurer can balance
the records. Happy riding.
Happy Holidays. Enjoy your family including your four- legged
ones.”
This year’s officers are Melissa Stockman (Director), Kimberlee
McCoul (East Vice),
Larry Plagerman (West Vice), Jessie McLaughlin (Secretary),
Jodie Field (Treasurer)
and Wade Field (Times Keeper), and Maizy Sandoval (Junior Rider
Representative).
Additionally, the Rules Committee is made up of Scott Howe
(Chair), Sharon Kelsey,
Kelvin Plagerman, and Terri Lowry (Alternate).
Please invite your friends to join us this year...the Games
Division is a great place to
start new horses or reach for new personal records (and
everything in between)! The
best part is that you’ll make new friends along the way. For
more information on the
Games Division, please contact Melissa Stockman at

FINANCIAL 2021
I would like to extend a “thank you” to Jean Garcia for her
ser-vice as Treasurer. She has served in many positions over the
years including WSH Presi-dent, Puget Sound Zone Presi-dent and
more. Several years ago, she took over for Carolyn Kennedy when
Carolyn retired from the position of Treasurer and we appreciate
all of her efforts! I have volunteered to take on this role for
2021 and I look forward to the challenge. In complete transparency,
here are a few things you, the members, should know.
The following will be the only signers on the WSH bank ac-count,
Emma McLaughlin as President and Terri Lehnertz as Vice President.
I will not be a signer on the account as Emma and I are
related.
The following are allowed to deposit into the account - Emma
McLaughlin, Terri Lehnertz, Ka-mie McDowell (memberships), and
myself.
Monthly statements are received by President Emma McLaughlin
(and will be being received by Terri Lehnertz).
Monthly P and L reports as well as a copy of all checks written
that month will be provided to the Executive Board Members. A copy
of the quarterly P and L will be included in the Canter.
Tax filings will be completed by an outside firm for submission
to the IRS annually.
Registration of WSH as an recog-nized entity with the Washington
State Department of Revenue has been renewed and is good through
March 2022.
Individuals needing to be reim-bursed or having a bill paid,
will need to e-mail receipts and/or invoice to [email protected]
using the subject line “WSH Finan-cials”. The e-mail should include
a detailed recap of what the pay-ment is for (i.e. Trails and
Pleasure Yearend Awards). A check will then be mailed.
Please know that I am an open book and should you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!

TRAILS AND PLEASURE DIVISION
Another year is coming to a close, and as usual I am amazed at
how fast the time has gone. With everything we had going on with
Covid and elections, it has been inter-esting, to say the least. We
had State regulations go into effect that had a harsh effect on any
and all activities and events, so we were very limited to what we
could or could not do. For some of us that board our horses at
training facilities, the re-strictions meant that we were unable to
spend time with our animals and a lot of scheduled events were
canceled because of attendance restrictions or arena clo-sures.
Trail and Pleasure had the advantage this year because of its
built in solitary nature. While we enjoy the company of others, we
also tend to work or ride on our own and this worked well for us
this year. In fact it worked so well that we had 18 entries
complete the year with very respectable ride times.
Senior High Point Rider, Bonnie Schuchman (Photo #1), turned in
an impressive 328 hours and Sondra Johnston (Photo #4) was our
Reserve Senior High Point Rider with 274.5 hours.
The Hand/Driving High Point winner was Marcia Porter (Photo #2)
with 44 hours and Kimberly Lansing (Photo #3) with 22. Kim had hip
surgery in July so all things consid-ering, 22 hours was great!
Our Junior High Point winners were a brother/sister combo of
over achievers that turned in impressive times. Savannah Price was
the High Point winner with a whop-ping 460 hours and Mason Price
was the Reserve High Point winner with an equally impressive 398
hours.
We finished our year with Cheryl Hayward (260 hours), Marrisa
Bortoldo (221 hours), Danielle Gleeson (211.25 hours), Alex Meyer
(136 hours), Willie Hansen (134 hours), Mary Brady (93 hours),
Susan Gleeson (81.33 hours), June Robinson (57 hours), Al-lana
Boeman (47 hours), Sky Anderson (26 hours), Milayla Palm (26
hours), and Lexi Peltier-(20 hours).
For those of you that are curious, times their hours by 4 and
that will give you the number of miles each one rode while racking
up these times. For example, Savannah rode 460 hours times 4 =
1,840 miles. See what I mean? Know what else? All four of our
Senior Winners in riding and in-hand/driving are over 50 years of
age and our Juniors are 13 and 10 years old. In fact, four of our
State riders are under the age of 10 and nine of the other riders
are over the age of 65. When we say Trails and Pleas-ure is for all
ages, we mean it.
During the “Convention”, the Trail and Pleasure Division elected
new Division Direc-tors. Bonnie Schuchman and Kim Lansing have
agreed to co-chair the division and move it forward and I think
that is going to be wonderful. We raised the sign-up fees
officially to $25.00 per rider (per category) and agreed to allow a
3-month “catch up” for your times to count. In other words, if you
sign up for WSH and T&P on or before January 31 of any year,
you may count time accrued starting October 1 of the pre-ceding
year. If you sign up in April, you may go back to January 1 and
count your ride times.
We made it as user-friendly as possible so that everyone would
have a reason to join. Remember, any time you are riding your horse
in a non-competitive time, it counts. As long as you are not being
timed or judged, your riding counts. Even when you are at an event,
the warm-up and cooldown time counts as long as you are not in
front of a judge or timer. You may not ride a horse that you are
being paid to ride (training or exercise) and claim that time.
Clear as mud, right? It will get easier as you get used to it.
Willie Hansen Past T&P Director (Boy that sounds good!)

Congratulations to the Washington State Horsemen Games
Division’s High Point Winners! Beginning in the top left: Leadline
Wade McCoul (with his Mom, Kimberlee), Buckaroo Arabella Howe,
Junior Hayley Baker, Intermediate McKinzi Tanner, Senior A Courtney
Stockman (also the winner of the Individual Games Horse of the
Year), Senior B Aly Rehm, Super Senior A Melissa Stockman (also the
winner of the All Around Games Horse of the Year / Ought To Be a
Dancer Memorial), and Super Senior B Yvette Henderson (plaid coat)
with saddle sponsor Jodie Field (Jodie Field and Associates).
Although not a typical year for their shows (including the
Washington State Championship Show)...nor a typical year for
Convention, the members came together on November 14 to recognize
the efforts of the divi-sion’s members. Not pictured - Wade Field
(Roberta Dunckel Memorial Award) and North Country Riders (Games
Club of the Year). Again, congratulations to this year’s
winners!
