In 2011, Washington spent over $14 billion importing oil into our state. That’s over $14 billion that left our state instead of being invested in the economy. This dependence on oil has led to budget-stretching gas price spikes. And as air pollution in- creases, more and more people are suffering from asthma and other lung diseases. The best solution to volatile gasoline prices and harmful air pollution is to use less oil and encourage more investments in cleaner fuels. Producing low carbon fuels will create jobs in Washington, give consumers more choice at the pump, and healthier air now and for future generations. A clean fuels standard is the way to make that happen. A clean fuels standard requires oil refineries and distributors to ensure that Washington’s fuel supply gets cleaner over time, with a reduction in carbon pol- lution from gasoline and diesel by 10% over 10 years. Companies can utilize an array of clean fuels and technology solutions to meet the standard, including advanced biofuels, electricity, natural gas, propane, or even cleaning up ex- isting petroleum-based gasoline or diesel. A clean fuels standard makes it possible for all types of fuel to compete on the market based on their carbon benefits and costs – ultimately benefiting consumers. In 2011, Washington spent over $14 billion importing oil into our state. That’s over $14 billion that left our state instead of being invested in the economy.

This dependence on oil has led to budget-stretching gas price spikes. And as air pollution in-creases, more and more people are suffering from asthma and other lung diseases.

A clean fuels standard requires oil refineries and distributors to ensure that Washington’s fuel supply gets cleaner over time, with a reduction in carbon pol-lution from gasoline and diesel by 10% over 10 years. Companies can utilize an array of clean fuels and technology solutions to meet the standard, including advanced biofuels, electricity, natural gas, propane, or even cleaning up ex-isting petroleum-based gasoline or diesel.

A clean fuels standard makes it possible for all types of fuel to compete on the market based on their carbon benefits and costs – ultimately benefiting consumers.

By adopting a clean fuels standard, Washington will create good jobs, provide more fuel choices, reduce costs, cut pollution and bring growth to rural and urban communities. It’s the smartest and healthiest way to drive our economy forward.

CREATING JOBS AND FUELING ECONOMIC GROWTH

Environmental Entrepreneurs estimates that each million gallons of advanced biofuels produced will generate 2.24 permanent jobs, 10.29 construction jobs, and nearly 15 indirect jobs, including feedstock production. In 2011, Washingtonians consumed 3.2 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel. Switching just a fraction of that to home-grown biofuels could have enormous economic benefits. And with some of the lowest electricity prices in the country, consumers save money by ditching petroleum for electric vehicles.

• Keeps our “gas money” in our communities.

• Creates jobs electrifying vehicles and growing locally-produced sustainable biofuels.

• Will improve public health by significantly reducing carbon emissions and other air pollutants from the transportation sector.

• Includes consumer protections to safeguard against high prices at the pump.

• Builds off programs already in place in other states and will create a unified west coast market for cleaner fuels.

CLEANER AIR FOR OUR KIDS

BENEFITS OF A CLEAN FUELS STANDARD

THE ECONOMICAL CHOICE

Air pollution related illnesses cost Washington families, business and schools hundreds of millions of dollars each year. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency found that vehicle tailpipe pollution is responsible for two-thirds of the region’s air quality problems. It is also responsible for nearly half of Washington’s global warming pollution. Diversifying our fuel supply will allow us to clean up our air so that Washington kids can breathe easier.

As gas prices rise, our dependence on global oil markets is stretching family budgets to their limits. A clean fuels standard affords us more control over the fuel we use to power our vehicles, giving families more choices and opportunities to get off the fossil fuel price roller coaster.
