    Welcome back!

It's been a busy couple o months here

as we prepare or the release o Warp

Rit. This issue has been especially di-

cult to prepare because we haven't

received submissions or several o the

sections. Since we don't have ull timestaf writers to prepare articles or us,

we really do rely on the community to

produce content or us to publish each

issue. I you've got some uf or ship

designs or perhaps a tutorial on paint-

ing and modeling we'd love to have it!

Feel ree to drop us the article and we'll

    put it in.

Another way you can help the maga-

zine is by submitting your ships and

eets to Gothicomp. It's already been

another year and the competition isopen or submissions until the end o

July! It might not seem like a big thing,

but those images provide the magazine

with a large selection o ships to use in

    articles throughout the magazine.

I'd also like to apologize or an error in

Warp Rit issue 31. We had incorrectly

listed the author o Battleeet Limante

as Bryan McMacho. His name should

have been listed as Bryan McMahon.

    Sorry about that!

This issue has some good stuf withthe nal part o Battleeet Limante, an

alternative rule set or eet engage-

ments, and a Tactica on using the Tyrant

as well as another great conversion by Mangozac, this time

o an Inquisitorial Black Ship. We also have part two o the

Spaceeet to BFG conversion covering the Imperial support

    ships.

Unortunately, we are unable to bring you any news on the

status o the 2010 Compendium updates that were sent to

Games Workshop by the High Admiralty a ew months ago. We're hoping that something happens pretty soon because

the update is much needed and provdies a slight expansion

o the BFG ships and rules.

For those o you who might not be amiliar with the update

I'm talking about, it's available rom the link we've provided

here until Games Workshop approves them or posting to

    the main website: ttp://tinyur.com/23nu8q

Going back to the previous topic o submitting articles,

another item we are always on the look out or are battle

reports. It seems that there are only a ew that get posted

to begin with, but battle reports are a great way to nd out

about how the diferent eets perorm and how the new

ships and rules changs rom the Compendium hold up. I

you've got battle reports we'd love to get them and photos

    make them even better!

    High Admiralty

    Welcome to one o my of the cuf rants;

this one is about making your own ship

    stats or your eet.

First things rst: you'll have to decide

why your ship exists! This rings true or

    background and the actual predesigned

elements o the eetlist. Filling a tacticalhole in a eet list is pretty much always

a bad idea! This includes things such as

a 'cheap' carrier in an Imperial eet, or

an armoured prow in a Chaos eet. It is

better to pick an existing ship class and

then alter its stats into a new class. There

is no reason why the two classes have to

be linked in the background but some-

    times it does help.

Now consider why anyone would use

your ship and whether this would stop

them rom using a diferent class theyotherwise would. For example having a

Chaos Heavy Cruiser based on a Hades

but replacing some o its WB's with launch

bays. The Hades and this new ship would

ll the same supporting gunboat roles

with their lances but the new ship can

ofer launch bay capacity to other carriers

and so can still use lock-on special orders

just as you would usually with a Hades.

So this is efectively just an upgrade or

a Hades that, beyond imposing a steep

points increase, would make it obsolete.

Consider reducing the stats in some way

to make both choices viable and difer-

ent. Reducing the range o the dorsal

lances to 45cm makes the Hades better at

lance support than the new ship meaning

both ships have advantages over the other

    beyond cost.

The most common 'conversions' are Impe-

rial and Chaos capital ships where combing

the diferent plastic weapons can givenew loadouts. Also keep in mind you could

    increase/decrease speed (including AAF

distance), turrets, armour and hits. Chang-

    ing turning (including minimum distance

beore turning) should only really be a

    downgrade.

It is usually best to have the dramatic

changes as down grades so as not to risk

over powering your ship. I you do decide

to upgrade one o these characteristics one

o the others should be decreasedto com-

pensate. For example giving an ImperialDauntless class light cruiser a 6+ prow and

reducing its turning to 45* to compensate.

An important actor which is quite oten

overlooked is are there any advantages to

squadroning with existing classes to gain

    an otherwise unrealised advantage? For

example having extra armour or shields

will make them useul on point, protecting

a weaker ship. Even being exremely cheap

can give better leadership to a squadron! An

existing example is high leadership torpedo

    Dauntless variants squadroning with lower

    leadership Dictators. The 'token' repower,

the weak broadsides o the Dauntless and

Dictator, can be combined into something

    ar more useable. The Dauntles

squadron is one o the great hid

in the Imperial eet, both comp

    each other impressively well.

Putting a air value to your new sh

easy as buying upgrades or indiv

at a set price. Take the nearest shthe eet the ship belongs to and

them. It is important to compar

within the parent eet list exclusiv

to those in other eets, as one shi

    be considered more valuable dep

the other options and ship classes

How much better or worse is yo

that o its closest counterpart? Ke

that eet role is more important t

ship stats! This should give you a g

    ing point or value.

There are a ew hidden rules to odesigning a new ship. Battle Cr

    Heavy Cruisers should always

or equal to the most expensive

the eet and visa versa; no cruis

cost more than a BC or HC. No c

should have all armour ignoring w

you can help it (the AM Gothic w

Cannon is one o the only excep

ship should be slower than 15cm!

    TACTICAL COMMAND

IT'S NOT SO BAD: USING THE TYRANT y DAVID HSCOCKS

In this article I will be reuting the claim made by many that the

Tyrant class cruiser is a waste o points and should be avoided at all

costs. I believe this claim is made by those who ail to understand

the role the Tyrant is designed to play in an Imperial eet.

Many people say that the Tyrant class cruiser is able to take on

several roles but be master o none, Adam Brown in Admirals

tactics (pg2) (available as a pd on the Games Workshop site).

This is to say that such people believe that it is neither a premier

line breaker, such as the Lunar class, nor is it a useul long range

gunship, such as the Vengeance class. I it is compared to such

vessels in such a manner then this is undenaible. I one wishes to

regard the Tyrant in such a way then this is a perectly valid claim.

However, it is my belie, rom experiance, that the Tyrant has a

more productive use, when taken without upgrades that is. I

you remember that the Imperial ships need to be used as a team

to bring out their ull efectiveness then the design o the Tyrantmakes more sense. Chaos vessels are excellent individual vessels,

and do not need to work as a team to bring out their efectiveness

(although teamwork always helps). I you couple a Tyrant with a

Gothic class, then its superior weapon batteries can work with the

Gothics lances to cause greater damage. But, people say, a Domi-

nator can do this task better.

Not so, as the Tyrant has torpedoes, which when red with the

Gothics torpedoes produce a strength 12 salvo, enough to score

several points o damage of the average Chaos cruiser. Then,

the Gothic- Tyrant weapon battery/ lance combo can be used to

ecently nish it of, whilst they reload their torpedoes to attack

another ship at close range, something a Dominator cannot dowith a nova cannon. Given the nova cannons reduced efective-

ness since the games inception, this actor is an important one,

the liklihood o a nova cannon causing signicant damage is much

less than torpedoes at point blank range. Note that the Tyrants

weapon battery strength is important as i it was any lower, it does

not guarrantee to knock down the enemys shields, rom most arcs

    o re anyway.

Another use or the Tyrant is against Eldar. It is the only basic Impe-

rial Cruiser with longer than 30cm range weapon batteries. Even

though the extra range is minimal, and when not upgraded, a bit

puny, even one hit on an Eldar cruiser can be atal due to their

ragilit y. Most Imperial cruisers will never get the chance to re,

unless the Eldar player is careless. Due to the Tyrants extr a range,

the chance o scoring a hit is propprtionately more likely, making

the Tyrant a valuable anti-Eldar asset. Remember, scorin

on Eldar ships is an achievement, so make sure you take

that makes a hit more likely! Team up your Tyrants with

and you will have a versatile and resilient anti-Eldar eet

I hope that this article will convince people to give t

another go, in the roles it was truly intended or, rathe

role people seem to have assigned it without ully consi

logic and reason behind their decision. When used as a m

a careully constructed team (eet), the Tyrant is a valu

When it is picked or other reasons it will not work. Goo

    SHIPS DATABASE

SPACEFLEET SHIPS IN BFG: IMPERIAL SUPPORT SHIPS y TOM MOSELEY

This article covers Imperial support ships, it would have

covered Eldar too but Ive been a bit slack. There were a

ew very interesting ships added to the Imperial eet that

werent warships but could greatly increase the ofensive ordeensive potential o the ships around them. I guess young-

sters would call them bufs or something along those lines.

I Space eet had been ully developed I imagine all the races

would have been given something like the Imperial ships,

but support or SF was canned beore the other races got

ully developed eets, or in the case o orks and chaos any

eets at all although chaos could use traitor Imperial vessels.

This part is going to be a lot ier in terms o point values as

most o these ships have abilities that either dont currently

exist in BFG or employ existing abilities in a diferent way.

    Youll see what I mean.

    Castellan shield ship

This has been given an ocial conversion as a boring old

reighter, a travesty that I eel I must rectiy. In space eet

this was a very useul ship, especially when paired with the

ironclad. While it had virtually zero ofensive capabilities

the Castellan had a massive number o shields that could

be raised again at ull strength i turned of or a turn, very

useul compared to the other ships shields that stayed down

once hit. Unortunatel y i all its shields were knocked down

it exploded. It was amazingly nippy in space eet but Im

going to leave it at standard light cruiser speed.

The castellan extends the protection o its shields to any ship

within 15cm, even enemies that get within that distance. All

hits count against the Castellans shields rst (though the

armour value o the target ship is used to determine hits). I

all ten are knocked down the ship will sufer an

critical hit to the shield generator. Ships within th

re out with no problem; however ring at an

within the eld will take down the Castellans shNote that castellans cannot come within 15cm o

while they both have their shields raised, one will

i this happens, controlling player gets the ch

which. The ship may also perorm an emergency

o the shields at any point during the ring pha

dice are rolled or any given salvo, however they m

turned on again until the end o the next ring p

Only one Castellan may be included per 1000 poin

    (not including the Castellan itsel)

    Goliath Factory ship

GW already has a BFG conversion or this as the oand or once its actually better and more intere

the original ship, however or completeness Ill giv

a go. You could also use it as a heavy transpor

heavy uel transport. The original was a giganti

product Y. Theoretically this could be anything bu

always assumed plasma uel, which could be du

last ditch deence efort. It didnt even have any

    goodness sake.

It starts with eight blast markers worth o uel an

tison as ew or as many as it likes any time durinto the rear o the vessel. The blast markers can be

no more than 3 wide in a manner o the players

i a ship has no shields and will destroy any ordnance on a roll o

4+. The points value listed here is a nominal gure using Smother-mans ormula, but really this should only ever be used as part o a

    scenario.

    Galaxy roopship

The simplest use o this is as a standard BFG super heavy troop

transport but I want to try and emulate the way it worked in Space

Fleet. Originally the Galaxy was said to carry up to our regiments

and to also carry extensive training acilities and weapons work-

shops so that the ship could pick up recruits and have the

Although not intended or boarding actions it can engage in

them and they count as an attacking transport in planetary

    assaults.

    Stalwart Frigate

Converted to BFG and given the name Tarask merchantman by

GW this was originally a much more useul little vessel in Space

Fleet. It was a non warp capable escort ship designed to escort

reighters rom the jump point to their nal destination andprotect them rom pirates. Although lightly armed they pro-

duced a blind eld that could not be red through and had an

efect similar to a holo shield when under attack itsel.

The Stalwart is a relic o the dark age o technology, a number

were ound in systems reunited with humanity during the great

crusade. As warp travel ceased during the age o strie these

little vessels were still useul or in system use and were retained

in working order where larger warp capable vessels became a

waste o resourceas. The ship projects a eld o EM intererence

or hundreds o thousands o kilometres around it, making it im-

possible to target an object through the eld. Unortunately or

the ship itsel the enemy can usually work out the position othe Stalwart at the centre o the eld, although the eld itsel

does alter its dimensions slightly to help hide the ship. The Stal-

warts own weapons are unafected by EM elds generated by

Stalwarts in the same squadron but other squadrons o Stalwarts

will afect them and while it is theoretically possible, the Impe-

rium lacks the technology to interace the cogitators o Stalwarts

and other vessels so any diferent types o vessel in the same

squadron as a Stalwart cannot re through the blind eld.

This kind o cloaking technology is ound almost nowhere else

in the Imperium, and where it is ound it is almost always o

xenos (usually Eldar) manuacture, so human technology o this

type has worth beyond measure to the Mechanicus. As such

the Stalwart is only ound on a couple o major orge worlds,

notably Bakka and Graia and are only used when something

o extreme importance needs an escort rom t

    jump point to orbit.*

The Stalwart has a points value o 20 or the s

or the blind eld, or a total cost o 35 points

they may only be used in deensive missions

numbers should be restricted in a way that is

the assets being deended e.g. one per two

    or similar.

    Constellation argeting ship

The Constellation is absolutely packed to bu

sensors and targeting computers that som

o the Mechanicus believe are the best hum

made. The constellation links into the targeti

tors o riendly ships and gives them greatly

    targeting data and re control.

As a result o this all ri endly ships within 15cm g

range bonus to all weaponry and the negativ

the gunnery table is only applied over 45cm r

    over 30cm.

Also any one weapon system (not ordnanc

e.g. A Tyrant class cruiser could elect to re r

reduced by one, however the range and re-roll efects are lost, as

the sensors and cogitators are working at ull capacity simply to

    target the Eldar normally.

The constellation does not afect ordnance and benets rom its

own special abilities, so although listed as 30cm the weapons bat-

teries have an efective range o 45cm.

The constellation costs 25 points or the ship and the special abili-

ships separated across the board (in a way that requently looks

nothing like your chosen ormation), in this scenario you choosehow you are trying to approach the enemy and then deploy ac-

cordingly. You can attempt to use stealth to sneak up on your

enemies eet, use long range patrols and reconnaissance to oil

sneaky tactics, or deploy in a convoy, orsaking stealth but also

    keeping your eet together.

    FORCES

Both eets are picked to an equal points value.

    BALEZONE

Fleet engagements could happen anywhere. Setup celestial phe-

nomena in any mutually agreeable manner.

    SE-UP

Ater determining who is the attacker and who is the deender,

each player must select to use either stealth, a picket, or a convoy

to engage the enemy. I both players pick stealth the attacker uses

stealth and the deender uses guard down (they have been taken

by surprise by their switer opponents). I both players pick picket

the deender uses picket and the attacker must use guard down

(the more deensive eet establishes their picket lines earlier). In

any case, players take it in turns to deploy ships or squadrons, start-

ing with whoever rolls lowest on a d6.

Stet: Your ships power down and drit towards the enemy. This isvery much a gamble. I it pays o, your enemy will not be able to react

to your presence until your eet is right on top o them. I it ails, your

ships may be caught with their shields down; literally.

Instead o deploying ships or squadrons, deploy numbered tokens

(secretly noting on your roster which numbers corresponds to

which ships or squadrons) anywhere along your table edge. You

may also deploy an extra decoy token or every three ship/squad-ron tokens. Tokens use the ollowing prole (regardless o your

eet rules): speed 15cm, turn 45 degrees, moves as a cruiser, no

weapons, cannot be attacked by your enemy. Note that you cannot

squadron anything other than escorts as the resulting massed

    energy signatures would be unmaskable.

Tokens can be removed and replaced by the ship or squadron

they represent in one o two ways. At the start o your turn, you

may remove a token and replace it with your ship or squadron (all

squadron vessels should be within 10cm o the marker), ensuring

they have the same acing as the marker. They may then move,

shoot, etc. as normal or the rest o the game.

The second way to reveal markers is or your enemy to get closeand pass a leadership test. I, ater an enemy ship has moved, it is

within sensor range (see table below) o a marker it may make a

leadership test (with any applicable re-rolls allowed) or each token

within range. I it passes then the token is removed and replaced

as described above. I the test is ailed then the token remains. In

revealed by the enemy, revealed ships/squadrons must take a lead-

ership test (only re-rolls rom the ship/squadron are allowed). I the

test is passed, the ship/squadron behaves normally or the rest o

the game. I it is ailed, the ship/squadron has no shields or turrets

(or any eet equivalents) until the start o its next turn, but may

then behave normally or the rest o the game.

Ship Size Sensor RangStrike Crat Base contact

    Escorts 30cm

    Cruisers (all varieties) 30cm

    Battleships 30cm

    Space Stations (all varieties) 50cm

Note on mimic engines: i a token is revealed and it h

engines it is automatically assumed to pass the leaders

allow it behave normally. This replaces the normal rules

    engines in this scenario.

Picet: Your eet sends out its escorts and strike crat ahea

vides a better chance o oiling stealth approaches but does

    eet to spread out.

Deploy your ships using the deployment zones given beships can each ace in any direction. You can also, as a

ployment, place as many strike crat as you are normally

launch. I you do so, all o your carriers begin the game e

must reload ordinance beore they can launch any m

digrm is on te oowing pge.

Convoy: Your eet stays together so that each ship can s

rest. This leaves you vulnerable to eets trying to sneak up o

gives you the most control over your deployment.

Deploy your ships up to 30cm rom your board edge. All

ace the same direction, though you may choose which

that is. All ships must deploy within 10cm o a previously

ship (not counting the rst one, obviously).

    PICKET DEPLOYMENT TAbL

Gurd Down:Unortunately you have been taken completely by sur-

prise beore you could deploy your eet properly.

Deploy your ships on your table hal, at least 30cm rom any table

edges. All ships should ace the same short table edge chosen by

you. All ships should be placed, wherever possible, at least 15cm

rom any other o your ships (not counting members o their own

    squadron).

FIRS URNAter deployment both players roll a d6. The player with the highest

leadership admiral receives a +1 bonus to this roll. The player with

the most escorts receives a +1 bonus, and the player with the

astest ship receives a +1 bonus. The winner o the dice roll may

choose whether they go rst or second. Re-roll ties.

    GAME LENGH

The game lasts until one eet is ully disengaged or totally

    destroyed.

    VICORY CONDIIONS

Both eets score victory points as normal. To win, a player must get

more than 10% o the game size in points than their opponent. E.g.

in a 1500 point engagement, you must score over 150 points more

    than your opponent to win.

Designers notes: The stealth rules work on the assumption that the

stealth ships will want to reveal at about 50cm, so they can move in

and attack within 30cm. Sensor ranges were chosen so that a ship

can also move and possibly detect as ship at about 50cm, hopeully

keeping things relatively balanced, while still giving aster ships an

edge as patrol or infltration ships.

The guard down deployment can heavily penalize a player, but thisis intentional. It can only occur to you in one o two ways: either your

eet tried to sneak up on a much more aggressive eet and they beat

you to it, or you tried to orm a picket against a eet that was much

more deensively orientated and they ormed their battle line frst.

The rules in general should open up some interesting tactics. They are

likely to enorce the dierences between high attack rating eets and

low attack rating eets, rather than diminish them, as more aggres-

sive races will be able to use stealth much more successully but more

deensive eets can orm pickets much more readily.

    DRY DOCK

    BLACK SHIP CONVERSION y MANGOZAC

Hi BFG ans! Well I again nd mysel writing an article or Warp Rit

at the bequest o its excellent editor Vaaish. He was very ond o a

commission project I did at the beginning o the year and asked i

I would write up a brie Dry Dock article on it. So I hereby humblypresent my second Warp Rit article detailing the conversion o a

pair o Imperial cruisers into Inquisitorial Blackships.

About six months ago I was approached by a European BFG an

who had seen some o my BFG scratchbuilding work and asked

i I could build him on commission a pair o Blackships. The brie

was simple and used a picture o a model created by Rob Hender-

son or a rules PDF, however I was given pretty ree reign to come

up with whatever I deemed appropriate. Since I had to build two

copies I decided that I would create the Blackships as a set o resin

parts which I could use to convert a pair o standard plastic Impe-

    rial cruisers.

Unortunately since this project was a commission I didnt docu-ment large parts o the construction process, so the WIP photos I

do have do not begin until the project was well established (theyre

actually the photos I sent to the client to ensure he was happy with

    the direction I was taking).

The more scratchbuildin g I do the more Im convinced that anybody

can do it, so long as they have three things:

    The right selection o tools

The right selection o materials (particularly styrene extrusions)

    Patience

    Planning

As stated above, the primary inspiration or the design came rom

the Blackship rules PDF, however I also perused the internet and

ound a couple o other Blackship conversions. I also drew heavy

inspiration rom the Space Marine Battlebarge with regards to its

side ns and prow. From the rules I knew I had to represent the

Blackships superior characteristics: high speed, heavily armoured

and heaily armed.Once the donor plastic Imperial cruisers had arrived I assembled

the main hull (sans drive tubes and horizontal wing piece) and

chopped of the prow. From there I could decide exactly how to

proceed with the project and decided that there would be 7 resin

    parts or the conversion:

    Engines and horizontal wings

    Port and Starboard vertical ns

Two large sized weapons battery modules (each taking the space

    o two normal weapon modules).

    Prow (with integral launch bay)

    Bridge

I then set to work cutting up styrene loosely until I starte

    an approximate orm I liked.

Initial ConstructionSince I had experience creating weapons batteries I d

begin work on them very early on. The block is simply s

nated 1.0mm styrene sheet with strip styrene built up

top or detailing. I used a lot o 1.0x1.0mm styrene str

    project.

The engines were blocked out by selecting some t

styrene tubing cut to size and mounted around a drive

between them. To represent the power o the engines I

large, long drive tubes that extended right orward to

    bridge.

For the prow I cast up a pair o side ns rom my prev

Light Cruiser project and mounted them either side o

rectangular cross section styrene tube which would ult

    the prow launch bay.

Warp Rift Issue 30, DecemberWarp Rift Issue 30, December

    Progress

Like I said earlier, scratchbuilding is all about patience. BFG models

have lots o repetitive details so you have to just get into a zone and

keep layering on more levels o styrene strip/rod. The next picture

shows how signicant progress was made all over, including the

side ns. At this point I was still using a stock imperial bridge but

still intended to scratchbuild a custom one inspired by the Kar

Duniash bridges on the Rogue Trader Cruiser.

The picture to let shows one o the two vertical side ns. Obvi-

ously the two ns are mirror images so two had to be made.

Making mirror duplicates o parts is a real pain, but is easier i they

are made simultaneously. For example the main parts o the n is

made rom two sheets o styrene glued together. To ensure that

the two ns are as closely mirrored as possible I lightly glued two

sheets o styrene together (ensuring that the glue bond would beeasy to break later) and cutout the two n piece shapes. The shapes

were sanded to the correct shape and made sure to t correctly. By

then breaking the glue bonds I had two o each piece needed or

the ns which were then glued together as required or the two

    mirrored ns.

    he Bridge

The bridge was the part I had been putting of or most o the

project, but eventually I had to tackle it. I began building a box

shape that would t over the mounting block or the standard

bridge and ended up with an interesting design:

Ater consulting with some riends however I became convincedthat my new bridge design just didnt suit the Blackship aesthetic.

    Bridge MkII

Actually, calling it a MkII implies that I actually design

thing. But I didnt. At this point I wanted to get the proje

and ater rummaging around ound that one o the pla

bridges looked perect. Some slight cutting and ling lat

project was done! I also mounted some Chaos lance tu

the dorsal to round out the armaments.

    Resin Casting

The project wasnt quite over yet the client wanted two ships so

I had to take all o my scratchbuilt parts and mould them up! This

was done using single part split moulds in silicone, with the parts

cast in grey tinted resin. Casting is a massive topic in itsel so Im

not going to go into any details here.

    Finished Product

These are the photos I sent to the client beore posting him the

completed models. Suce to say he was very pleased with the

result! Notice how I had swapped the Lance turrets back to the big

boxy type that was at request o the client.

    Conclusion

Another successul project and another happy customer! I was

very happy with how the design turned out. I dont know i the

client has painted them up yet but perhaps we should pester him

or a showcase or next issue o Warp Rit!

With these articles I write long past completion o the detailed

project I oten nd I dont have pictures o many parts o the

process, leaving things eeling a little incomplete. Im planning to

commence one o my next BFG projects with a Warp Rit article in

mind, so hopeully will be able to give a very complete pictorial

    description o the process.

For any questions or urther inormation eel ree to contact me or

    VOID STALKER

BATTLEFLEET LIMANTE, PART II y bRYAN MCMAHON

Having returned to port ater successully engaging a local pirate

cartel eet and exterminating its hidden base, the XIXV Cobra o-

tilla returned to a heros welcome. Medals and celebrations were

passed around as reely as the wine. An unortunate side efect o

the estivities would maniest itsel in the ollowing weeks as the

entire watch post, save one man, was planetside enjoying the es-

tivities: one man who was asleep at the console. Thus the Ork eet

was able to pass the outer and inner sensors without detection,

and launch their Roks towards the ourth planet in the system.

The System o Rienea, and the Planet Timiothy were about to receive

a rude awakening to the Ork threat now bearing down on their

homes. The launch o the Roks triggered warning klaxons inside

the stations aging the systems. As general quarters was sounded.

all crews raced to their ships. The Mechanicus beseeched their

vessels to awaken or war with all haste and the planetary guard

mobilized to deend its citizenry and protect their only star port. No

one in the sector had encountered Orks beore and the subsequent

ailure to stop the rst wave or even inict a single enemy casualty

was devastating to morale. The soldiers eared their attackers were

invincible instruments o some unknown powers wrath they had

awoken during their celebrations. Realizing the deenders tenuous

position, the Fleet sallied rom their docks in an attempt to prevent

reinorcements rom deploying via Teleportas to overwhelm the

    beleaguered deenders on the surace.

Julima Gregacy, Flag Captain o the combined XIXV and VIKM de-

stroyer groups, ordered that no torpedoes be red beore closing

to within just 100,000 kilometers or ear o them being dragged

into the atmosphere and causing more damage to their home

world then the enemy was inicting. He planned on the initialsalvo baiting the Orks into leaving the atmosphere and giving

chase. There, his aster vessels would keep just ahead o the enemy

and lure them to the picket line ormed rom the vessels who had

missed the Ork approach. The rigates, Truths Light and Golden

Pillar, were waiting powered down alongside the escort carriers

Random Fate and Long Arms. The carriers would appear as harmless

transports on sensors and would register little threat to observers.

The destroyer group would move past this trap and hit both anks

    simultaneously.

A air plan, but as the age old adage goes. No plan survives contact

    with the enemy...###

"Come bout to eding 5489 mr 3982 nd prepre u

svo." The ships captain barked into his comms unit.

A strangled metallic reply came back moments later, "Course d-

justed sir, witing re order on your commnd."

The next ew tenuous seconds ticked by with a pace so slowly only

the seconds ticking by on his watch reminded him time was still

going orwards. The captain removed his cap and wiped his brow

on his sleeve as he waited or the given ring point to be reached.

These invaders, whatever they were, could be deeated. You simply

had to use more ordinance then normal against them.

Commander o the Triumphant and her sister ship Regin's Pride,

both Cobra class destroyers, he knew the deadly efect o a torpedo

volley at close range rom several past experiences. This time it

should work as well. Reaching down to the comm unit he icked

the key and gave a low growl into it. It was reasoned that since

the enemy was unknown any activation keywords could be inter-

cepted and reused against the eet at a later time so only sounds

were issued, with the Regin's Pride using a small bird call as its order

    to launch.

"Order received nd crried out Cptin." came the strangled

    metallic reply.

His Flag Captain had been with him or nearly 20 years on this

vessel, and they both knew its character aws and quirks like no

one else on board. Not even the Mechanicus priests could tell them

anything about the ship they didnt already know. Looking out his

view port he watched with joy as the torpedo volley was sent on

its way. His cybernetic hand twitching again, he looked down at it

or just a moment reexively beore his ship shuddered under a

    sudden and large impact.

Having allen rom his eet he scrambled to regain his ooting when

    the comm crackled to lie.

"Sir, return re rom te enemy sips! Fires on mutipe decs

nd sieds down! Wepons systems re minim nd we ve

incoming ttc crt, wt re your orders?"

Keying the unit again his voice came steady and calm, " Return

re s best you cn, prepre deensive turrets to repe teir

ssut nd wt is te sttus o te Regin?"

re-keying the comms unit he seated himsel back into his command

chair and strapped himsel down so that didnt happen again.

"Sir tey re undmged nd moving to support u

te incoming ordinnce wve. Our torpedo spred

neutried. Sir, mutipe new unnowns moving

oction mr, 4879 by 9012. Tey were iding be

despite the machinery twisting o his words.

"Understood, order te Regin to pu of nd me o

devous point s ordered, we wi drw enemy re

in teir escpe. Ignore ny repy rom teRegin nd rtubes. Wt is te sttus o te oter wings?"

His own voice continued to remain calm, despite his

running wild in near panic. His survival instinct was kick

now and wanted to rescind his order and to tell the Regin

where it was as he withdrew, but he couldnt bring him

it. To damn a pristine ship and crew to suicide when i

obvious that even a surprise attack was unable to catch

    guard, was sheer idiocy.

The ag captains own relie mirrored his own. At least some one

would survive this debacle to continue to struggle against this

    invader.

His hairs stood on end and his every nerve tingled, having used a

teleporter on several occasions, he knew the signs well. He quickly

unstrapped himsel and slammed his hand down on his command

override button. The boarding warnings went of all through the

ship, and he drew his pistols to prepare to meet the attack on his

vessel personally. The rst wave appeared right in ront o him. 3

brutishly large humanoids with ramshackle armor scraps attached

at random places, one wearing a mop bucket on his head, i it could

be dened as a he within its own species.

His twin bolt pistols boomed of o the inner sanctums walls and

behind him the hissing o hatch releases told him the astropath

was coming to join him shortly. His rounds impacted the back othe closest one and sent him sprawling across the deck and into

the wall, he didnt move. The other two turned and with a loud

yell ran at him with giant cleavers raised. He split his aim and

red again, both stumbled back rom the hits to their torso's but

resumed their charge at him again. His third shots hit the let at-

tacker in his waist while the right was struck on the shoulder. Both

    continued charging.

Behind the attackers the command deck's lit was rising and he

could hear the shouts o support rom his command staf, but paid

them no heed. He re aimed both shots at the right one this time

and caught him in the middle o his abdomen and where its heart

should have been i it were human. This one tumbled back to thewall as well, but the last one swung its cleaver or his let shoulder

and bit deeply into his side. The captain let out a strangled yell o

pain as the clever nally stopped below his rib cage just above his

kidney. He struggled to raise his right arm and its bolt pistol to

exact retribution but a large leather boot sent him sprawling and

wrenched the weapon rom his side.

He raised his head eebly unable to comprehend the shouts and

screams rom below. Surely his men could beat back this oe, he had

killed two himsel, he thought. Looking up he could see the other

two limping back towards him, not dead ater all. The last one

grinned at him wickedly with a gaping mouth containing large

    rows o anged teeth.

"Det to d Umies!" it roared as it raised a large metal cleaver.

The last sound Flag Captian Gregacys heard was the wet snap o

bone as the clever impacted his skull.
