Roy Pugh
Roy Pugh the Chairman of the Newport Moto Cross Club sadly passed away last weekend after a long illness. He started riding in the mid 60’s after attending an event. He paid 25 pounds for his first bike and joined the Acorns Club at nearby Gnosall. He rode with them riding a Triumph/Cotton 500 in the Juniors. By 1969 he had moved up to the Seniors riding a 250 Cotton. In 1970 he joined the Telford club and later joined the Clee Hill Club at Ludlow now riding a 250 CZ in the Experts. He was Secretary of the Telford club in 1977 but then decided there was sufficient interest to start a local club at Newport in 1986. Roy was still riding in the Experts class and in 1978 he was invited to ride in Holland along with his friend Keith Abrahams from Telford. When Roy arrived at the track he met up with Dave Thorpe who was having his first ever ride abroad. Dave and Roy became firm friends and of course Dave Thorpe went on to become World Champion. Roy was very keen on helping young riders having opened an Off-Road Shop in Newport and he took a keen interest in local rider Ian Tomkinson who had ridden with the AMCA International team, whose career was curtailed by a road accident on his way to work. Roy was particularly thrilled in 1990 when another young rider from the Acorns club, Paul Lippitt, won the AMCA 4 Stroke Championship and he along with his wife Betty attended the AMCA Presentation to see Paul collect the award. The Newport club started running Moto Cross events in 1986 on the 16th May at Adbaston and in 1987 moved to Sutton Bank Farm near Forton. By 1989 they were now running at both Sutton Bank and at Long Lane running up to 6 events a year. In the 30 years the club has run more than 120 Race Meetings and no doubt Roy has been involved in all of them. Not many clubs have achieved this number in such a short time. Would they have done this without Roy? I doubt it. In 2004 he persuaded Dave Thorp to attend the club’s Annual Dinner, and a few years later in 2009 was Elected by the AMCA clubs to serve as a Director of the Association and to sit on the Benevolent Fund committee. The County of Shropshire has more active Moto Cross riders in the AMCA than any other County in the Country, it is thanks to people like Roy who have helped run clubs and events. He has spent many hours at the Long Lane Track ensuring each event was run despite the various problems. The Sport and especially the AMCA owe Roy a great deal of thanks for his efforts and I know he enjoyed the Sport and the people he met through it. To his family, especially his wife Betty who supported Roy and who has served as the Treasurer of the club since 1989, without your help and support Roy could not have contributed so much to the sport. It is appreciated by both the riders (past and present) and by many others involved with the organisation of the Association. Don Green. Hon Chairman. AMCA.
