• 1. Portugese explorer who sailed around the Southern tip of Africa (Cape of Good Hope) and landed in India in 1498

of east in order to find Asia• 2. As a result, he ended up
in the Carribean in 1492• 3. Most historians agree
that Columbus was not the first to discover America (there were already a lot of people living there) but he was the first to begin European colonization

• Believing he had reached India, he called the group of islands in the Carribean the Indies, and the people living there Indians.
• Columbus spent the rest of his life looking for the passage from Europe to Asia but died without finding it
