I. Why go exploring?

• A. God• 1. Europeans realized that

not all of mankind was Christian, so many Europeans went on journeys to try to convert other peoples to Christianity.

• 2. People who go to far off places to convert others to their religion are known as missionaries.

very profitable job• 2. Europeans sailed

from Europe to the South of Africa, then to India and China.

• 3. Since the journey was so long, many explorers worked to find a shorter route to Asia.

• 1. Portugese explorer who sailed around the Southern tip of Africa (Cape of Good Hope) and landed in India in 1498

• 2. The incredible profit that came to De Gama from this voyage inspired other explorers to follow in his tracks and to find a better, faster route

• B. Christopher Columbus• 1. Tried to sail west instead

of east in order to find Asia• 2. As a result, he ended up

in the Carribean in 1492• 3. Most historians agree

that Columbus was not the first to discover America (there were already a lot of people living there) but he was the first to begin European colonization

• Believing he had reached India, he called the group of islands in the Carribean the Indies, and the people living there Indians.

• Columbus spent the rest of his life looking for the passage from Europe to Asia but died without finding it

• 1. Magellan found the passageway from Europe to Asia that Columbus had been searching for.

• 2. He sailed to the southern tip of South America (later named the Strait of Magellan)

Mexico (the Aztecs) to bring the king of Spain gold

• 2. He made alliances with other tribes under control of the Aztec

• African Slaves were then shipped to America

• Europeans then bought tobacco, sugar and cotten in Americas then shipped them back

• F. Middle Passage – the journey from Africa to the Americas where many slaves died

• Between 1500 and 1800, about 10 million enslaved Africans were brought to the Americas

• This will be a TEST grade!• We’ll work on this today,

• Log book must include:• Pre – log - what you expect on your voyage, what

you need for your voyage, goals of voyage• Journal Entries – 3 journal entries about what you

see on your trip, how close you are to meeting your goals, etc.

• Post – log – What did you accomplish on your voyage, what contributions you made to history, plans for the next voyage

• 3 Pictures – Include three pictures/sketches of what you see on your voyage (plants, animals, natives, etc.)

• Map – Create a map of the area explored including 5 labels
