PositionPosition is the location of an object or

place.

Each time you identify the position of an object or place, you are comparing it with the location of another object of place.

Describing a Position

A location to which you compare other locations is called a reference point.

Try to always give a direction and distance when describing a location.

You’ve used this in Social Studies before and probably at your own house!

Describing a Position Look at the blue recycle

can again. Use the regular garbage

can as a reference point. How would you describe

the position of the blue recycle can now?

Everyone should say it’s to the left of the regular garbage can!

lines (left and right, N/S) and longitude lines (up and down, E/W) to describe location.

A Change in Position - MotionMotion is the change of position over time.

If you missed the motion and didn’t see it occur, you would still know that motion happened because of the change in its position __________________________.compared to something else.

The position changed!

Page 9: Warm-up Find the blue recycle can. How would you describe it’s position? (circle one OR two of the following answers that best fits) It’s to the.

Relative Motion All motion is determined according to an

observer’s “frame of reference”. An object that is not in motion according to

you, might be in motion according to somebody else. It depends on his/her “frame of reference”.

Look at a car parked outside in the parking lot, is it in motion? If an astronaut was looking at the car from space, what would he/she say?

NO

YES, it is moving 1040mph, the same as Earth. Astronaut’s “frame of reference”

Relative Motion – Frames of Reference

An observer on the bus would say the sign is

changing position, but the driver is not.

An observer on the sidewalk would say the driver is

changing position, but the sign is not.

Position Changes at Different Rates

Speed is a measure of the distance something moves, in a given amount of time.

speed = distance time

or

s = d/T

Try finding the speed!

During the past 2 hours, this bus traveled 90 kilometers.

What is the speed of the bus?

45 kilometers per hour

Try finding the speed!

5 hours have passed by, and this frog has only traveled 35 centimeters.

What is the speed of the frog?

7 centimeters per hour

Page 14: Warm-up Find the blue recycle can. How would you describe it’s position? (circle one OR two of the following answers that best fits) It’s to the.

Velocity Velocity is speed in a specific direction.

Directions can be north, east, south, west, vertical, upward, downward, etc.

She traveled down the stairs at 2 meters per second.

Ex: If you say you’re walking east at a speed of 3 meters per second, you are describing your velocity.

Ex: A person walking north at 3 meters per second would have the same _______ as you, but a different ________.

speedvelocity

Page 15: Warm-up Find the blue recycle can. How would you describe it’s position? (circle one OR two of the following answers that best fits) It’s to the.

Try finding the speed!1. Ice hockey player #3

skated south 12 meters in the last 4 seconds.

2. What is his speed?

3 meters per second

3. Ice hockey player #14 skated north 21 meters in the last 7 seconds.

4. What is his speed?

3 meters per second

#14

#3

5. So then do they both have the same velocity? Explain.

No, because #3 is traveling south and #14 is traveling north!

Wrap-up #1, #2, #3

1. Describe the position of the sign compared to the bus.

2. Describe the position of the soda can compared to the bus.

3. In both #1 and #2, which object was the reference point?

It’s to the right of the bus.

It’s to the right of the bus.

The Bus

Wrap-up #4

4. These four pictures show the American Scream Machine. You don’t actually see it moving, but how do you know motion occurred?

I know motion occurred because the roller coaster is in a different position on the tracks each time.

Wrap-up #5 and #6

Picture yourself walking across the room reading a poster that you’re holding up in front of you.

5. According to your “frame of reference”, is the poster in motion?

6. According to another classmate’s “frame of reference”, is the poster in motion?

NO

YES

Wrap-up #7

This train is

traveling 30 km/h north.

This train is

traveling 25 km/h north.

7. Do both trains have the same velocity? Explain. No, they are both traveling north, but they have different speeds.
