Reading is like a sport– the more you practice good techniques, the easier it gets!

Since the course will require you to read somewhat challenging texts, let’s review some good active reading techniques.

Technique #1: When reading in class, ALWAYS follow along with BOTH your ears and eyes.

Technique #2: If you don’t understand a word, look it up (…or ask ).

Technique #3: Stop often to think about what you are reading. Don’t rush through the text. While stories are amusing, they are

usually also teaching you something important; reading ONLY for amusement will cause you to miss out on valuable learning!

Technique #4: Make notes about the text. This is also called annotating the text. Write down questions, summarize

difficult parts, underline important parts, write down bigger ideas, etc.
