Who, What, How

purchase Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. (that’s only about 2 cents an acre!)

At the time, critics thought Seward was crazy and called the deal "Seward's folly."

Why did the US get involved?

Expand power & gain natural resources! Major discoveries of gold made in AK in the

1880s and 1890s. Brought attention and people to Alaska. Today, petroleum transported across the

state through a pipeline is Alaska's richest mineral resource.

“The Purchase of Alaska”

Questions to think about while reading: What was going on in the US when Alaska was

purchased from Russia? Why was the sale considered a “folly”? When and why did attitudes towards Alaska

change? How were the native people of Alaska treated?

“The Annexation of Hawaii”

when they first arrived in Hawaii? Why did planters want Hawaii to be part of

the US? What was President Cleveland’s stance on

the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and the annexation of Hawaii?
