Warid Pakistan launched its services in May 2005. Within 80 days of launch Warid Pakistan claims to have attracted more than 1 million. users[5]. According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, currently Warid Telecom has 16.41 million subscribers as of October 2008. It is ranked as the fourth largest operator in Pakistan. Warid Pakistan claims it has the largest "post-paid" subscriber base in Pakistan.

On June 30th, 2007, Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) and Warid Telecom announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement subsequent to which SingTel will acquire a 30 per cent equity stake in Warid Telecom for an estimated $758 million — valuing the company at an enterprise value of $2.9 billion.

BACKGROUNDWarid is operated by Abu Dhabi Group led by Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan. Warid started it services in Pakistan May 2005. Since than Warid Telecom successfully launched the services covering 28 cities with a total population of around 32 million people. Warid Telecom with low rates to capture the market with already giants operating the cellular world of Pakistan is the major task for Warid Telecom major competitor is mobilink with already 10 million subscribers it is not a easy task to break the market.

Warid Telecom did a great job when launched Warid didn’t get the attention of the subscribers after a month of so the boob started We aren’t willing to purchase the connection as the company in start didn’t leave a huge impact to switch the mobile connection. After one to two month after the launch of Warid Telecom people started purchasing the connection and I myself purchased one the main feature about Warid Telecom that attracts me its Friends and Family feature with rates of 1.90/mins. The rates are the cheapest in the market and with 30 sec billing feature makes it worth while to try once.

In July I purchased Warid connection as many people are purchasing it. In the start I face many network problems as it is almost not possible to call on mobilink network all the time it gives me network busy message the services of Warid is some want bad in the start when the storm of subscribers hit Warid Telecom it become difficult for the company to handle the new subscribers but Warid Telecom did a great job in managing all the subscribers and handling the network.

Warid Telecom has some features as low calling rates 30 sec billing. Coverage is improving and hope will be improved as the company grows. Warid Telecom according to me targeting the student class rather than business men.

Page 6: warid

Warid Telecom is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Group & SingTel Group. Abu Dhabi Group entered into a strategic alliance with Singapore Telecom. Subsequent to this transaction in July 2007, telecom giant SingTel acquired 30% percent equity stake in Warid Telecom, Pakistan, for US$758 million. This partnership is part of a strategy to support Warid Telecom’s continued growth and to enhance its market position

By Mehmood-ul-Hassan KhanConfucius once said that communication is the toughest thing to do. However, the dawn of information technology has reduced barriers of distance and cultures. Elements of privacy, clarity and swiftness through the ever increasing growth and connectivity levels of the telecom sector have taken over.

Hamid Farooq is CEO of Warid Telecom, which is owned and supported by the famous and financially strong Abu Dhabi Group. The group is among the largest foreign investors in Pakistan with substantial shareholding in Bank Al-falah and United Bank Limited, among others.

Hamid initiated the interview by giving an overview of Warid Telecom. Launched on 23rd May 2005, Warid Telecom started its service from 28 cities in the first phase and plans to expand the network to other far-flung areas in the second phase by the end of 2005 while the third phase will start in 2006. And this is soon becoming a reality since Warid Telecom is the preferred choice for local customers due to its innovative marketing strategi.

He acknowledged the incentives and investment friendly environment, facilitating policies and strong commitment of the government

STARTIGIES

Talking about his company's operations and strategies, he said that Warid Telecom has acquired both LDI and WLL licenses reflecting their strong positioning as a major player not only in the cellular market but also in other segments.

As for having regional and global exposure, Warid Telecom is part of Warid Telecom International. Based in Abu Dhabi, the group recently acquired GSM license in Bangladesh. Warid Telecom International is actively pursuing expansion in other areas as well and through this integration with its business partners Warid brings decades of Telecom experience to Pakistan and other regions of the world.

Although rather new when compared to other operators, Warid has managed to leave its mark in the local cellular market, said a beaming Hamid. With state of the art infrastructure backed by its own fibre network which has been made available through Wateen Telecom the sister concern, Warid is all set to get itself positioned on the market leader spot in the near future.

Talking about voice quality, Hamid claimed that the company does not use any compression equipment and thus voice quality is preserved and travels with elements of genuineness and clarity. Although costlier, it is in accordance with the companyís policy of customer satisfaction and quality service.

Page 7: warid

He went on to add that sales and growth pattern speaks for the level of popularity that Warid enjoys in the market. In one short sentence, Warid gives the best possible service with the lowest cost to its customers. Currently Warid enjoys the best post paid package ration in the market. This has been made possible by having well designed and executed franchise and sales channels. Due to our strength in supply chain management.

This is also the reason that within the first year of operations, Warid managed to attract more than three million subscribers. This was the highest growth rate exhibited by any telecom operator in Pakistan's history.

Swot analysis:

Company's core strengths

Analyzing about his company's core strengths, Hamid attributed success to the companyís talented employee base. Different departments within the company are inter-connected and work like a team. There is a spirit of professionalism, honesty, dedication, industriousness, harmony, execution, customer satisfaction and above all service in the ranks of our team which is the ultimate difference between us and our competitors in the country.

Conclusion

Cellular companies in Pakistan are indulged in a play that rapes the consumers’ rights. We have seen so many instances where cellular companies mislead or not fully educate their customers regarding pricing, hence making a significant amount of black money.

Until now, we were witnessing such practices with either a single package or a single product, but Warid Telecom has dared to present whole range of their post-paid packages without mentioning the pulse rate. Thanks to Mr. Saeed Alam who met me at Ufone franchise (Commercial Market, Rawalpindi); he was there to shift his network from Warid to Ufone (through MNP), due to this particular cheat by Warid.

All prices are quoted for 30 seconds pulse rate on Warid’s official webpage, without exclusively mentioning it, which leads to a very confusing situation for customers.

So what happens is that users opt for packages that offer very attractive prices, but they never know that the pulse rate is 30 seconds instead of 1 minute. Yea a huge bill shakes and defiantly brings them back to their senses from a fantasy world where they think that Warid can offer them Rs. 0.70 per minute for off-net calls (we know that interconnect charges are Rs. 1.20 per minute, so off net calls can never be less than 1.20 in any case)

Is there any one who can fight for consumers? I guess no; PTA is going to take severe action against Warid by posting a "Notice" on a pop-up window when you open PTA’s website. That’s it…
