Sitting around with nothingto do? Why not check out the lat-est videos on You Tube. And youdon’t have to be a video couch-potato, either; maybe you couldupload some videos of your own.

Posting videos on YouTubecan lead to opportunities andeven a little pocket change. Youcould even become famous, likethe new lead singer of old-schoolband Journey. Who knows, youcould also become the next CrisCrocker.

A while back, Journey (youmight know them as the “don’tstop believing” guys) took a lookat some videos on You Tube anddiscovered the newest member oftheir band. By uploading a demoof himself singing, young Philip-

pine singer Arnel Pineda got theopportunity of a lifetime. Now heis the lead singer for Journey, tour-ing the world and getting rich. Be-ing discovered by an extremely fa-mous 70’s-80’sband is somethingthat doesn’t hap-pen often. He maynot be an oldie orhave the samelook as the rest ofthe crew, but he’sgot the perfectvoice to spice up the band again.

"I’ll take 100 big ones on thebig guy and a dollar on the other."Kevin Furgecy, also known asKimbo Slice, was placed in theXtreme fighter for the recognitionof his pounding on the ghetto tal-

ent. His brutal videos left viewerswith an open jaw. This 235 poundbeast was contracted to theXtreme fighter to battle as a pro-fessional against the many shak-

ing opponents thatwill have to fighthim. You didn’t seeThe Rock get dis-covered on YouTube, did you? No,because beingKimbo Slice takesguts, and he’ll

probably take the guts of his com-petition.

Brito has been painting since she wasseven. She took art classes at Hilltop Galleryfor three years where she learned to becomethe painter she is today. Denisse also ap-plies her talent in her art class at NHS whereshe has built her knowledge in painting. Britoenjoys being behind the easel at home aswell as in her art class at school. Shehas been in art all four years at NHS.

When Brito’s artwork was avail-able for viewing in the NHS Library, many teachers and students asked ifthey could buy one of a kind paint-ings, but Denisse does not paint forprofit, she simply does it because sheloves it.

“I like to paint because it’s away in which I can relax and see theworld with a different perspective,”said Brito.

Denisse is a talented younglady who is an example of one whogets her work done and knows how

to apply herself to the bestof her ability when it comesto the Senior Project. Britoplans on attending the Uni-versity of Arizona whereshe will major in architec-ture and minor in either in-terior designing or art.

This year Student Council has been busy beyond belief and eventhough the year is almost over, there’s no sign of them stopping.

Friday, March 13th the StuCo leadership attended the Youth onthe Border Conference to learn more about our community and becomemore aware of the issues in order to become better leaders. The seminaroffered several workshops, presentations, and a chance to speak tostage and film director, Luis Valdez.

This conference was a day-long experience which the attendeeshad been really looking forward to. Members who attended this eventinclude: Rafael Camacho, Stacy Lopez, Heidi Elizondo, Tasha Harrison,Cris Arroyo, Czarina Nafarrate, Josh Wodka, Alexis Parada, Daisy Vizcarra,Aaron Wodka, Alexis Kramer, Paloma Mayer, and Manny Felix.

“It was very interesting. I enjoyed myself and learned so much injust those few hours. I’m excited to share my experience with the rest ofthe StuCo members,” said Student Body President Rafael Camacho.

This event focused on the youth living in border towns and hadactivities involving Mexican history and the culture which we live in.Professor Hector F. Moroyoqui spoke about the culture and traditionsof the Sonoran tribe, the Mayo. In addition to elaborating on culture, there were drug prevention workshops and anti-violence presentations.

The students got a chance to speak to director Luis Valdez whoshared his witty childhood memories and gave a strong speech thatresonated with each person in that room. He was very charismatic anddown-to-earth which only made it easier for the students to focus.

“I’m glad the conference addressed topics that are vital to thehealth of our students,” said STUCO sponsor, Liz Thomson. “I waspleased by the dialogue this event generated.”

We see videos all overYou Tube of people sitting in frontof white sheets, holding camerasin front of their faces, and flippingtheir hair like a diva. Thanks to CrisCrocker, we now have many of hisvideos to choose from to enjoy agood laugh. Can you say "YouTube legend"?

As you can see, even thedumb and the brainless can makethemselves rich and famous just bytheir natural talent. From crazyninjas, to kangaroo fighting, it’sall shared by the one of manysources that helps people on theinternet to both earn and show. You Tube, the site for stardom.

Over the past four weeks, someone has been leav-ing graffiti around campus and security has taken actionto bring the culprit to justice.

“To catch the person responsible, we have set upsome surveillance items around the areas the activitiesare taking place. We are also walking by those placesmore,” said, George Alarcon, head of security.

For as long as can be remembered, musicians have beenrevered for their art across the globe. Many bands have usedthis power to spread their political message, whether it isthrough their music or charismatic front men.

Since the 1980s, U2 as a band and individuals, havelargely campaigned on behalf of such issues such as poverty, social injustices, and human rights. Front man Bono has alsoorganized major campaigns such as the Product Red campaignto raise profit for the Global Fund.

Political bands do not have to fall simply into the realmof human rights but of animal rights as well. Punk rock bandRise Against are strict vegetarians who are active campaignersfor PETA. In their video for the song “Ready to Fall,” they

address environmental degradation and its effect on ani-mals, along with the cruelty of hunting for sport.

But it’s not just rock bands that have a political agenda.Country music stars the Dixie Chicks received major back-lash after a comment made by lead singer Natalie Maines, saying “Just so you know, we’re on the good side withy’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’reashamed that the President of the United States is fromTexas.” It sparked much controversy, as many Americansbelieved that Maines should not have criticized the presi-dent on foreign shores. After a year of hostility, the DixieChicks came back with a new sound, but still keeping theirpolitical beliefs.

Whenever someone who has inspired, entertained, or motivated us is lost, even ifwe didn’t directly know the person, itpunches a hole in our hearts. It hurts to knowthat person will no longer be around to singthose songs or tell those stories to the restof the world. Over the years there have beenthose unfortunate cases where talent hasbeen unexpectedly taken from us.

Kurt Cobain was the lead singer, gui-tarist, and songwriter for the band Nirvana. The band released three albums which wereall very successful. This success however, proved to be too much for Cobain. He be-lieved that the public had been misinterpret-ing his lyrics and music. During the finalchapter of his life, he struggled with drugaddiction to heroin. As indicated in his sui-cide note, the pressures placed on him bythe media and the public were too much forhim to handle. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was

found dead in his home in Lake Washing-ton. A self-inflicted fatal shotgun wound tothe head was the cause of death.

Tupac Shakur was loved by many de-voted fans. He was a best-selling rapper, actor, and activist. Much of his music waswritten about racial and eco-nomic equality, drug and al-cohol abuse, and violence. After leaving a boxing matchon the night of September 7,1996, he was murdered by anunknown killer. Whilestopped at a red light in LasVegas, a white Cadillac pulledover to the right side of thecar and began shooting.Shakur was hit by four bul-lets, two of which struck vi-tal organs.

What can be better than a perfect day in thegreat outdoors enjoying wilderness? How about hik-ing with your fellow Girl Scouts sisters? Well that’sjust what Girl Scouts troop #7710 did. Two weekendsago, on March 8, this daring troop devoted a day togo hiking in Sonoita creek. They were accompaniedby Girl Scouts coordinator, Irene Cooper and her as-sistant, Mr. Thomson, who organized this adventure.

After their encounter with nature, the troopenjoyed a carne asada at Mr. Thomson’s house wherethey had fun mingling after their long day. This tripwas a great experience for the girls and it will helpteach them teamwork and companionship.

“The trip was so much fun. We got to experi-ence what it’s like to be in the wilderness. Being ableto go on a hike was a great adventure,” said KishaUgarte.

Club NotesIn an effort to spread the message of water conservation,

the NHS Science club plans to hold a day of fun in the sun forelementary school students, teaching them about water con-servation and how important it is, especially in the state ofArizona.

“Water conservation is a very important skill to learn, especially here in Arizona, where it’s so hot and dry, and waterisn’t something that gets here so easily,” said sophomore AlekxisValenzuela.

The water day will be at the practice field, with elemen-tary students from across the school district being bussed here. The event will consist of 16 teams, each with two student-teach-ers and activity stations, teaching some aspect of water con-servation to each group.

Science Club hopes that these children take home thesefacts with them, hopefully spreading it to their friends and fam-ily, and thereby helping the earth.

It will be held Wednesday, April 29th all day.

Music resonated against the walls on March 26 as musicians of all ages gathered in the James K. Clark Auditoriumfor the Santa Cruz County Music Festival.

Several elementary and middle schools joined the high school in this event which celebrated the talent of band, orchestra, mariachi, and choir. The band portion consisted of jazz and concert bands.

The event lasted the whole school day and was very productive. The musical groups received a rating based ontheir performance (fair to superior with distinction).

“The festival went pretty smoothly and was very fun. The variety of music was incredible and lively. I really enjoyedbeing part of it,” said Randy Cochran, NHS band director.

Elvis has left the building. ElvisPresley was the King of Rock N’ Roll. Hewas an American actor and musician. Opinion

Not very long if you keep living theway you do, that’s for sure. Health is some-thing not everybody thinks or really caresabout because, hey, we’re fit and lovin’ it.We’re also lovin’ that dollar menu and allthat good stuff and, frankly, we don’t careif it is greasy and full of fat because we’refit and lovin’ it.

You might be unfit (fat) and occa-sionally watch as fit (not fat) people shovelburger after burger into their mouths whichhave miraculously stretched to fit so muchin them. Think about this, though, we areyoung and our bodies are functioning atmaximum capacity, for the most part, to al-low the energy of running all our daily tasks(like eating) and chores (eating some more).

As you get older your body will gettired and your metabolism will slow downdramatically, lessening its ability to burncalories and break down food. What willhappen next is that you will get fat (or fat-ter) and in a few years you will start gettinglittle surprises from your body saying“Hey! What’s up?!” These surprises areheart attacks, strokes, cancers, tumors, anda McFlurry of other diseases.

Hm, not good, eh? A lot of the foodyou eat when you are young has good stuffand bad stuff in it. Fast food will usuallyhave a high amount of fat and cholesterol

that builds up in your arteries. Think aboutit this way; you are sipping soda througha straw, that soda is your blood, and all ofa sudden bits of gum are sticking to theinsides of the straw. Slowly but surely thegum will create a wall of sticky delicious-ness (if you get hubba bubba) and it won’tbe so easy to drink soda anymore (or getblood into your heart). Then you die. No,it is not a happy ending because you arenot taking care of your body.

It really does not take a doctoral de-gree to figure out if something is bad foryou, just look at the nutrition facts and, more importantly, the ingredients. If there’sa word that you can’t even pronouncethen you better not eat it (or you shouldlearn to read) because a lot of food isstuffed with preservative chemicals suchas sodium nitrite, which has been provento cause cancer over long term consump-tion (note: sodium nitrite is found in al-most every type of meat, soup, or breadyou eat… except for when there is a tagthat says “CONTAINS NO SODIUM NI-TRITE”, in that case you’re safe). Yes, itcan be a whopper of a task to know whatto eat and what not to eat but if you startliving healthy now, you won’t be askingyourself “how long will I live?”

The price of justice

As I stand in line at the supermarketwaiting to pay for my groceries I cannothelp but skim throughsome magazines. I’ll usu-ally make fun of odd-looking celebrities ormaybe even wish I hadtheir clothes, but re-cently I cannot help butbe annoyed by the manypictures of artists ChrisBrown and Rihanna.

As many of usknow, these two wereseen to be the ‘perfect’couple by the media andthen he hit her leavingmany bruises. After hear-ing about this, I got anintense feeling of notcaring. In addition, Ikeep wondering why itseems as if every singleperson cares (way too much, by the way)about this couple.

I would usually ignore the trash thatannoys me and eventually forget about it,but it seems as if this is out to get me. Iturn on the TV and there it is, ‘TEXT ONEIF YOU THINK CHRIS BROWN IS SOOOGUILTY’. I turn on the computer and thereit is again, even in the web pages that aresupposed to post news stories. It’s not

By Laura LeyvaEven celebrities mess up...who cares?

that I don’t care about relationship abuse,in fact, I think it’s horrible. What is even

more horrible is how it ishappening to so manypeople around the worldbut nobody is payingmuch attention. For aminute I actually thoughtthat by something like thishappening to a well-known music icon, peoplemight open their eyes tothe real issues... but thathasn’t happened andprobably won’t. I supposeeverybody is excessivelybusy keeping track of ev-erything his or her favor-ite celebrities say or do.I’m not saying that fa-mous artists are notpeople too, and that weshouldn’t care that they

are victims of many issues going on in theworld, but what I am saying is that we shouldstop caring so much about them just be-cause of their fame.

It’s possible for me to rant about thistopic for hours, but I won’t. Therefore, I willjust say one last thing, people care way toomuch about what happens to celebrities be-cause of their fame and that, in all honestly,is stupid. Enough said.

Many of you have undoubtedly seenthe shirts, coffee mugs and bumper stickerswith such slogans as “War is not the an-swer” or “Violence never solved anything.”I would never say that anyone who promotesthese slogans is stupid, because peace is anoble ideal. But when they go to the ex-tremes of ruling out the use of military forcefor even the direst situations, they are naïve.The notion that all the world’s problemswould simply disappear if our country didnothing but endorse a policy of endless dia-log and negotiations is ridiculous.

Throughout history, war has helpedsolve most, if not all, of the most disturbingviolations of human liberty the world hasever known. War ended the tyrannical rulethat presided over the United States duringthe Revolution, it ended slavery, defeated

the Nazis in World War II, forced the un-yielding Japanese to surrender in World WarII, and is on its way to exterminating terror-ism and promoting freedom throughout theMiddle East.

Evil cannot be tolerated and allowedto grow into something more dangerous. Un-fortunately, peace is not always an option.Does anybody think that if you would justtalk to people like Adolf Hitler, ask them nicelyto please stop, or give them what they want, they will just back off? Well, leading up toWorld War II, someone named Neville Cham-berlain did. In a time when Hitler had unlim-ited power and controlled the flow of infor-mation in Germany, Chamberlain (BritishPrime Minister) was so obsessed with notgoing to war that he gave 11,000 square milesof Czechoslovakia to him.

Hitler promised peace and everyone

applauded Chamberlain for appeasing theGermans. Winston Churchill saw it for whatit was; a defeat without war. Hitler could nowcontinue to spread his rule and obtain landwhen all he had to do was threaten to go towar. Hitler, of course did not keep his prom-ise (didn’t see that one coming). The manwho didn’t hesitate to kill 11 million peoplein gas chambers did not even give breakinga promise a second thought. Eventually, Brit-ain had to face Nazi Germany as a weakernation. A nation should have the courage tostand up for what it stands for and to de-fend itself against evil regimes. Appease-ment doesn’t work. Evil on this level mustbe confronted and defeated.

War is hell. It is without a doubt oneof the worst things a man can experience. My argument is not that war is good or thatthe Marines should immediately be sent infor every problem. Far from it, my argument

is that it should always be an option thatremains on the table, even if only as a lastresort. Diplomacy doesn’t always work, andbecause of that fact, war is sometimes nec-essary.

In the case of Israel, for example; youcannot simply ask that the Israelis lay ontheir backs defenseless and allow terroristgroups like Hamas to destroy their cities andkill their people. This is just one situationwhere diplomacy means nothing. Even thefounding fathers of our country realized thatforce was necessary to sustain liberty andmaintain world order. During the AmericanRevolution, in Patrick Henry’s famousspeech, he asked, “Is life so dear, or peaceso sweet, as to be purchased at the price ofchains and slavery...give me liberty, or giveme death!”

By JC ClarkWar is the answer: diplomacy cannot defead absolute evil

Many state legislators, such as some in Kansas, are con-sidering overturning the death penalty, saying that the cost ofkeeping a death row inmate is too high, especially in these timesof economic turmoil. Due to the many appeals cases whereinmates try to keep themselves alive, they cost millions of dol-lars in lawyers fees, not to mention their stays at federal pris-ons.

Can you put a price-tag on justice? Will the guilty bepardoned because of the cost to put them to death?

Many of the states planning to remove the death penaltyfrom the law books would save an average of 2 million dollarsper case, claiming that the money saved will be used for stateand community service programs. Instead of condemning a mur-derer, a rapist, someone who chose to break the law, to death, they’ll just let him live in order to save money to pay for someprogram? Why not save money by refusing to pay for the luxu-ries given to these prisoners, such as hot water, libraries, internet, and just give them the bare necessities to survive? Why notfollow the example of Sherriff Joe Arapio and Tent City inMaricopa County?

If one takes another’s life, that person deserves to pay.Justice should not have a bargain basement price, justice shouldbe served swiftly and fiercely, whatever the cost.

Crude violence, murderand gunshots; this is whattoday’s television and allsources of media has turnedinto. The worst case is thatwe, as teenagers who watchviolent scenes, are more likelyto display aggressive behav-ior, thoughts and emotionsthan those teens who are lessexposed to violent program-ming. The media can be veryinfluential and has the abilityof controlling or influencing aperson’s thoughts, actionsand emotions.

An experiment revealed that exposure to media vio-lence can cause immediate increases in aggressive thoughtsand tolerance for aggression in both children and teenagers. For example, in studies with younger children, youngsterswho were shown a brief violent film were slower to call anadult to intervene when they saw two younger children fightthan were peers who had watched a neutral film. Apparently, the single violent clip appeared to make the children more

By Cris Arroyo tolerant of aggression.Violent programming on

TV is not the only source of vio-lence that we have today, Violentvideo games have recently sur-passed violent TV as a matter ofconcern for parents andpolicymakers. Why you ask, wellthere are 3 basic reasons: First, children are spending an increas-ingly large amount of time play-ing video games; second, a largeportion of these games containviolence; and third, because thechildren playing these games areactive participants rather thanobservers, they may be at risk of

becoming aggressive themselves. The impact of exposure to vio-lent video games has not been studied as extensively as the impactof exposure to TV or movie violence; however, the results reportedfor video games to date are very similar to those obtained in theinvestigation of TV and movie violence. Some may debate whetherthe media increases violent behavior amongst teens, yet what isknown for sure is that violence in the media is surely not decreasingit

Cris Arroyo and Fernando Rosas are depicting whatteenagers that are exposed to Violence on TV do.

Recently the vast majority of the mainstream me-dia has gone absolutely crazy over the comment madeby talk radio host Rush Limbaugh that he hopes Presi-dent Obama fails. Even Obama himself, along with hisChief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, has specifically men-tioned Rush Limbaugh as someone whose advice mostpeople should disregard. The problem is that they tookhis statement out of context and completely misrepre-sented what he said.

The media played the sound bite “I hope he fails”and condemned Limbaugh for the outrageous state-ment, saying that to hope that the president fails is thelike hoping the country fails. As Limbaugh points out,it’s the opposite. He wants the country to succeed, which is why he wants the president’s policies (social-ism, no guns, universal healthcare, etc.) to fail.

What Obama stands for entirely contradicts ev-erything this country has stood for since our foundingfathers fought to make it that way. This is why I, likeRush, want President Obama to fail miserably. Thereshould be nothing wrong with saying this. In a FoxNews poll taken in 2006, fifty-one percent of Democratswanted President Bush to fail. Where was the outcrythen?

Obama blames Limbaugh for the lack of biparti-sanship that should be taking place in Washington dur-ing this economic crisis. He basically says that Repub-licans are evil because they share this hope for failureand stand up to oppose every bill that Obama proposes.Maybe it’s just that some people in the governmentstill have principles worth standing up for.

When there’s one party that believes in the freemarket with no government interference, and anotherwhich believes that the government should control thewhole economic system, there really isn’t any room forcompromise. You can’t negotiate freedom. Either youhave it or you don’t. Imagine if our founders had said,“Yes, we believe in freedom of speech, but sometimesit’s okay to censor people.” That’s why these peopleare elected, to take a side, not to check their beliefs atthe door when the president says so.

“I hope Obama fails too”By JC ClarkPerhaps it was the musical differences or the death of

manager and friend Brian Epstein, but Yoko Ono pointedout these and many other issues, coming between TheBeatles. I recently read an article in which the writer blamesPaul and Linda McCartney for the band’s rupture. He claimsLinda was unpopular among the band members and Paulwanted to spend all his time with her, due to her “constantneed of attention” and “Paul’s obsessive love for her”. Healso stated Yoko was actually very closeto George and Ringo and caused no prob-lems whatsoever, since she was very in-dependent. He has to be kidding! Thisguy has it all backwards! Lennon him-self was quoted in a magazine article com-plaining that they all hated her. Last timeI checked the word “they” is plural, mean-ing “they” are George, Ringo, and Paul.Maybe she wasn’t the only reason theFab Four went their separate ways, butI’m sure she had a lot to do with it. Idon’t even know her personally and sheannoys me; she took naps underLennon’s piano and would randomly yellout his name interrupting, and ultimatelyruining, recording sessions. Can’t yousee how that would be very annoying?Even non-musicians would agree, I’m sure.Yoko was relentlessly looking for Lennon’s approval andattention. She so wanted to be part of the greatest bandknown at the time. Of course, this would ruin the concept of

the band and really, her vocals aren’t that great. Can youimagine the sound of two crows fighting right in the middleof “Hey Jude”? Aren’t we lucky she never got in? How-ever, since she didn’t get in, she sabotaged the band. She took advantage of the tension between Lennon andMcCartney and only fed Lennon more lies and ridiculousideas. She manipulated his choices and convinced him thatMcCartney was out to ruin his musical talent by sabotagingLennon’s songs. Yoko, Yoko, Yoko... if only she knew what

real music was; thenmaybe she would haveseen that Lennon andMcCartney were lyricalgeniuses together. Shebelieved she was doingLennon good and thathis career would onlybloom after the break-up.Rapper Nas believes shedid, but he’s a rapper andprobably has only heard“Imagine,” Lennon’sbest song as a solo act,and probably his onlygreat song.I guess what they say istrue: love is blind.

Lennon proved it to us and unfortunately, this blind loveaffair tore The Beatles apart. RIP- The greatest band ever. Thanks a lot, Yoko.

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? I know the janitors are. The quarter has ended and yet still things haven’t changedin our bathrooms. Juan was here, Puro West Side; one thing is writing on school property but another is writing in the bathrooms. I meandoes your mom enter the bathroom at home and see “puro class of 2009” written all over the walls? No, I don’t think so.

What’s the reason behind this immaturity? If that’s how people send their message does that mean students should have theirbackpacks written on? Message from Joe “Tuck it in Sirrr!” Take a moment to think about it. “Hey Danny, you want to go check the newson CNN to check what’s up?” “No, I’ll just read the bathroom walls.” Isn’t that what text messaging is for?

Dear Editor,The tuck in policy has me terribly disturbed. The tuck-in

policy is meant for our safety so that people can’t concealweapons, but there are some things that need to be concealed.

We all know that the new fashion statement for any-body is the skinny jean, but when you tuck everything in, youcan see EVERYTHING! Won’t it be much nicer to walk aroundwith loose jeans than walking around campus, looking ateveryone’s details? If you do sport the skinny jean, do every-one a favor and leave it un-tucked.

Dear Editor,As in my last letter, I wish to reinforce my notion,

that enforcing patriotism is a foly within this campus. The aim of patriotism is to excite the constituents of anation to a voluntary appreciation of their country, notto ensure that every citizen is waving a flag or chantinga hymn. I don’t feel it proper that I’m “politely asked” tostand during the nation anthem under threat of a refer-ral.

It’s not easy for a band to become legendary and de-fine a generation, unless, of course, the band in question isthe Beatles.

This group consisted of the creative geniuses of JohnLennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.Together, they wrote and performed over 200 songs and lefttheir mark on this planet.

Indeed, the Beatles accomplished a lot of things whenthey were together, while the only thing the Jonas Brothershave managed to do isgather a fan base of easilyamused, shrieking girls andwrite a few mediocre songs. Are they popular? Ofcourse. Does that meanthey’re particularly tal-ented? No.

The Jonas Brothersare just another boy bandthat has managed to getgirls to gather in large mobsand fight for autographs. They are only famous be-cause they’re famous, people like them because that’s what they are supposed tolike. Of course, being “attractive” also helps them becomemore popular among these young girls who probably wor-ship them.

The Beatles got the whole world to fall in love withthem because they were talented; they received attentionbecause they deserved it. The Beatles helped people seethings differently; they made bizarre tunes nobody could un-derstand but were still understood regardless. The Fab Fourwere able to be a great influence on society that challengedpeople to go farther and the Jonas Brothers make 13 year-oldgirls blush, so yeah I guess they’re the same.

The Beatles were perhaps the greatest musical groupthat was ever formed; they still manage to maintain their rel-evance today despite the tragic death of two of its members. The Jonas Brothers are a big thing now, but in the futurethey’ll probably just be a memory in the minds of women whohave finally grown up and faced reality. The two bandsshouldn’t even be compared because of their vast differences. The Beatles will live forever as legends. As for that othergroup, well, we’ll see.

“Hit me baby one more time,” surelysomething we’ve all heard at least once. But some people have found that if thesong is played backwards, then you canhear the words, “Sleep with me, I’m nottoo young.” This is an example of backmasking.

Back masking is when a message ishidden in a song and can be heard whenthe track is played backwards. Some re-searchers also have found that some backmasked songs can contain subliminal mes-sages that can potentially affect the lis-tener.

There are also various other ex-amples of back masking. One example isthe song Another One Bites the Dust, byQueen, which is said to say “It’s fun tosmoke marijuana” when back masked.Another song that is widely believed tohave back masked messages is LedZeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. It is saidthat when reversed the songs says satanicmessages.

Back masking was first made popu-lar by The Beatles in their 1966 album,Revolver. They said that they started ex-perimenting by reversing tapes and theyliked the sound. Back masking also con-tributed to the “Paul is Dead” rumor. (See“Don’t stop the ocean, I need to feel atidal wave” on the next page )

Various bands have been accusedof back masking; some include Led Zep-pelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen,Styx, AD/DC, The Eagles, Judas Priest, and The Rolling Stones. These and someother bands have also been accused ofinserting subliminal messages in theirmusic, which is said to persuade the sub-conscious.

There have also been court casesagainst bands because people state thatthe music persuaded them to commit in-sane acts. There was one court caseagainst AC/DC because someone saidthat their music inspired them to commitmurder. Another similar court case washeld against Judas Priest because twoboys said that their music contained sub-liminal messages that made them want tokill themselves.

While some people think that backmasking exists, others think that it is com-plete nonsense and extremely hard to hidein a song. People think that having a sub-liminal message hidden in a back maskedsong and making the words fit in the songwhen played forwards is nearly impos-sible. Whether back masking is used forsubliminal purposes or not, if you listento a back masked song long enough, you’re bound to hear something.

Inspiring, magical and enlightening. Sometimes the odd balls are the ones you’regoing to want to be like when you grow up.

From being the odd balls sitting in the back of the class to being on top of the charts. These five fellows, brothers Gerard and Mikey Way, Frank Iero, Ray Toro and Bob Bryaralso known as My Chemical Romance (MCR) came to be a band of interest.

Born and raised in New Jer-sey, Gerard Way and former drum-mer of the band, Matt Pelissierstarted off the band after Gerardpulled the plug on art, quote innicer language “the hell with art,”by writing “Skylines and Turn-stiles” dedicated to the devas-tating 9/11 attack. The attack waslike a loud gunshot for Gerard, making him reevaluate his wholelife and pursuing his secret Pas-sion, music. Before making theband Gerard had nothing great

going for him. Working in a comic shop as an artist Gerard battled with alcoholism, prescrip-tion drug abuse, an illness in the family and severe depression.

Needing a guitar to round off their music, Pelissier and Way looked back to theirhometown of Belleville, New Jersey. They joined forces with lead guitarist Ray Toro whowas between bands at the time. He agreed to help them and put some riffs guitar to thewords that Way and Pelissier had written. When they needed a bassist, Gerard’s brotherMikey Way bought a bass guitar and began learning as MCR began making more songs. All they needed now was a rhythm guitarist to help fill in the background of Ray’s solos. The Answer was Frank Iero. Having just quit a band named Pencey Prep, Iero dropped outof college to begin playing with his favorite band at the time-- MCR.

The band got a dark punk/emo image, which they like to call violent pop. The bandreleased their debut cd “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought me Your Love” withMCR’s first song ever written “Skylines and Turnstiles”. Then their first tour in a van thatthe Ways grandmother bought them. The band never saw the super stardom this tourbrought upon them coming.

Leaving Eyeball Records they signed on to Reprice Records (Warner) to record theirgreatest album yet “Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.” Their singles “I’m Not Okay,” “TheGhost of You and Helena” (written for the Way’s grandmother who had just died) seemedto broaden their fan base working with bands such as Thrice, The Used, Alkaline Trio andTaking Back Sunday gaining major success selling 11,000 albums the day of the release.

By 2007 with a sober and better lead singer MCR’s 3rd studio album “Welcome to theBlack Parade” went platinum. Now the bands grandiose career seems to be sticking around. This is now the band that we will look in 10 years and they will render your heart the sameas they did when you first heard them.

My Chemical Romance’s lyrics will raise the hair on the back of your neck, make youwant to rock out, and make the passion of rock n roll stick in your soul till death.

The infamous eight track called Stairway to His possibly the greatest musical piece ever, but hacreated one of the largest controversies in the musdustry. The debate over what the song really meanstinues to this day. However if you ask me, Led Zepcame up with the best song ever.

The first time you play the song, two thingpop into your head. One: This is an awesome song. The dudes who wrote this put the drugs into sex, drock n’ roll. The opening tune is what is most knownthe song, and it is what sticks in your head after theends. Then the lyrics go from a lady in gold, to a bird, to a piper. Then, the beat picks up and in a couseconds goes into a head rocking guitar solo by JPage. After a while the song dies down as Robert Pvoices fades away saying, “And she’s climbing theway to heaven.”

Madnesse table as Fab Four? By Michelle Ceballos

In 2004, Armando (a.k.a. “Mando”) Arana never imagined that he would be so musically successful within the spanof five short years. Now at the age of eighteen, Mando is a singer, songwriter, devoted musician, and frontman for the localacoustic/pop-punk band Midway.

The band of brothers known as ‘Midway’ consists of Mando Arana (vocals/guitar), Dino Aguirre (drums), DavidGutierrez (bass), and Augie Zepeda (guitar); all of whom are seniors here at Nogales High School. The group is managedby SILO4, an indie music label created by ex-Nogales Apache, Robert Villegas.

Mando began putting his own musicand lyrics together along with help from hisfriend Dino in their previous band, ‘BehindThe Label’. The group lasted from 2007 to2008 and gained a decent sized local fan base. However, because of the graduation anddeparture of two senior members, BTL cameto an end in the summer of ’08. Afterwards,Mando decided that he wanted to keep play-ing his music along with Dino still on drums. The two continued to rehearse, write, andperform under their new name, ‘The Differ-ence Between Us’.

“We chose that name because we feltthat our music sounded really unique whencompared to other acts that were in the area,”said Mando.

In July 2008, Mando and Dino askedtheir best friend David Gutierrez if he wouldbe interested in playing bass guitar in theirband. David was ecstatic but skeptical be-cause he did not know how to play a singleinstrument. For the next few months at re-hearsals, Mando and Dino would simply teach David where to place his fingers and what strings to hit on the bass.

On Friday October 24th, TDBU traveled up to Phoenix to record their first demo. During that weekend their manager, producer, and media director commented that if Mando, Dino, and David wanted to get recognized they would need a new, catchier and shorter name. A couple of short weeks later they decided to rename the band ‘Midway,’ after a favoritehangout spot of theirs.

In December 2008, the boys’ friend Augie Zepeda joined the group to fill the sound and play second guitar. Augiewas originally offered the position in September but denied because he was busy working with the drum line at the time.Luckily, since Augie’s joining of Midway, the group has gained an immense new sound along with plenty more fans.Midway now plays all around Nogales getting crowds energized with songs such as, “Fairground,” “Need More (Time ToParty),” and “Green Day”.

Midway is currently in the process of submitting their demo to numerous major record labels such as Victory, FueledBy Ramen, Photo Finish, ECA, and Epitaph. Their ultimate goal is to get signed to a professional label, record their firstalbum, tour around the United States, gain thousands of fans, and make a living doing what they love. If you would like tosee Midway perform live you can catch them at their next show on April 3, 2009 here at NHS. If you would like to contactthe boys of Midway or show support them you can go to http://www.myspace.com/midwayaz and add them as a friend.

However, playing the song backwards creates acompletely different song. Forget climbing to heaven, thissounds like a message from the head honcho of evil him-self. Suddenly “If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow, don’tbe alarmed now, It’s just a clean spring for the May Queen”turns into something similar to sad Satan torturing peoplein a tool shed. I don’t know about you, but that’s scarystuff right there. Listen to that segment of the song, andPlant’s strange pronunciation makes the back maskedmessage pretty real.

So which is it, ultimate rock song or Señor Satancalling us? Honestly, I really don’t think it matters. Thesong is a pure stroke of genius. Heaven versus hell, for-ward and backward. It all cancels out and leaves nothingbut a classic. Stairway to Heaven is a rock song for theages.

or a fiery passage to hell?

It happened on a rainy morning. November 9, 1966 tobe precise. He stormed out of the studio and drove off. Thestoplight changed, he didn’t notice and the accident tookhis life. A crowd began to gather around the body wrappedin flames. His face was disfigured, he looked familiar, but noone could recognize him for sure. No dental records wereavailable, but a name was under the license plate records:Paul McCartney.

The three other members were heart-broken, but theshow had to go on. The media was silenced through bribesand pleas; the tragic news never reached the faithful fans. Alook-alike contest was held and innocentcontestants were thrown into the great-est scheme in the world of music. Will-iam Campbell was the winner and manystill believe that he has been the PaulMcCartney we know and love for the past43 years.

Fans everywhere have found hid-den messages in songs and album cov-ers throughout the years. Whetherthey’re a coincidence or intentional, it’sup to you.

Probably the most famous messagehas to be the Abbey Road album cover. The outfits in this album cover representmuch more than just fashion statements.Lennon is in white representing a priest,Ringo as the undertaker, and George as the grave digger.Paul is in fact barefoot in this picture, which is a symbol ofdeath, due to the fact bodies were buried barefoot in theolden days. Also, if you look closely at buggy in the back-ground you can read the license plate which reads:LMW28IF… Linda McCartney Weeps and Paul would havebeen 28 IF he would have lived.

In the album cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely HeartsClub Band everyone is looking at a freshly-dug grave. Onthe drum reads “Lonely Hearts.” Using a mirror, you couldplace it perpendicular to the center of the drum splitting thewords “Lonely Hearts” in half, the combined writing reads -1 ONE 1 X HE DIE. This means that the “1 One 1” equalthree, or that Paul is gone, and the “X” is meant to cross outPaul. Between the words “HE” and “DIE” is an arrow thatpoints directly to Paul.

Songs are said to indicate McCartney’s death as well.Revolution 9, a “song” with commotion and nonsense, is

one of these songs. If playedforward you can hear agoniz-ing screams from a man, a carcrash, and sirens all remindersof how Paul allegedly died. Al-though, throughout the song allyou hear is a man repeating“Number 9” over and overagain, you could hear “Turn meon, dead man,” if played back-wards. A line from “A Day inthe Life” is too obvious to ex-plain: “He blew his mind out ina car; he didn’t notice that thelights had changed. A crowd ofpeople stood and stared, they’dseen his face before...” These

are just a few, but various songs talk about a death at 5 inthe morning; the time Paul died.

A clever hoax used for publicity or a cry of guilt fromThe Beatles? Only time will tell, but in the meantime listen tothose songs closely and see for yourself, you might besurprised at what you hear.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus released their third studio al-bum, Lonely Road, on February 3, 2009. The first single off thealbum was ‘You Better Pray” and landed on number 14 on the Bill-board 200. This is also the last album that featured guitarist EliasReidy, who left after the disc was recorded.

Lonely Road has a softer sound than their previous albumDon’t You Fake It and includes less rock songs and more ballads. This album also has a fair share of religious songs like “Believe” and“Godspeed.”

My favorite songs on the record are “Pleads and Postcards,”“You Better Pray,” and “Step Right Up.” These songs are appealingto me because they’re more upbeat than others on the CD and haveenjoyable lyrics. All the songs are based on something different andhave a varied sound.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes soft rock and anoccasional alternative rock song. This album strays from the path ofthe last disc, but it is still enjoyable and catchy.

How would like to fight and survive a zombie invasionwith only 3 friends, and no help? Valve (the company that cre-ated “Orange Box” and “Counter-Strike”) started the nextgeneration game “Left 4 Dead”. Left 4 Dead for the PC, andXbox 360, is based on a wide mass infection that has continuedon for over 2 weeks… with help at every corner gone and killed. You’re the only group left. You’re the only ones left for dead.

When you first play the game, it is like a peek a boo gamewith zombies popping out from each side, roof, and walls. Thezombie reactions are accurately real, because shooting a bulletnear one, will make them look for you and attack. During thegame you will encounter stronger, more mutated zombies suchas; the Smoker who can stretch his tongue across and grab andlick you, the boomer which is a big round zombie that vomits you in acid, the hunter whichlooks for you and beats you down, and the witch who is the strongest heavily mutated

Like July 18th, 2008 (the day The Dark Knight hit the-aters nationwide) March 6th, 2009 is a date many committedto memory. To millions of fans of the acclaimed comicbook series, the premiere of Watchmen was a big deal. I amfamiliar with Alan Moore’s Watchmen, so my expectationsfor this adaptation were low, knowing at least it wouldn’thold a candle to the original.

The film ran approximately three hours and has abastion of a plot. It stays relatively faithful to its precur-sor, opening with the murder of ex-superhero The Come-dian (Jeffery Dean Morgan) and an introduction to Ror-schach (Jack Earle Haley), a right-wing, paranoid, wantedvigilante.

What follows is a plot that stretches over four de-cades, beginning with the era of the Crimebusters (think anextremely grittier version of the Justice League) and endingon the eve of global nuclear war. My only bone to pick isthat some points that really make the story were missing Grade: C+

from the movie, which stole dimension from the charactersand made the plot that much harder to understand.

It’s relieving to see that Zack Snyder has matured asa director. Snyder must have realized that in order for Watch-men to succeed, he couldn’t rely on his old bag of tricksthat got him through 300. Gaudy slow-mo shots are rare

and the depth of the plot isn’t overshadowed by excessiveblood and guts. The result is tempered and gorgeous cin-ematography.

But the film would have withered without Morganand Haley. They personify these intense characters andexhibit all their strengths and flaws with honesty. Nite OwlII (Patrick Wilson), a retired superhero, is so engaging andpathetic, you’ll sympathize with his struggle to call theshots in his life again. Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cudrup) wasimpressive as the only guy with superpowers in the movie.Unfortunately, the performances of Silk Spectre II (MalinAkerman) and Ozymandias (Matthew Goode) become deadweights the other actors have to carry.

Though not Oscar-worthy, Snyder can rest assuredthat no violent mob of ticked off fans are en route to burn hishouse down. Watchmen will leave the comic book puristssated and first-timers pining for a copy of Moore’s graphicnovel.

Watchmen hits theaters—did you watch the “Watchmen?”

Controversial book receives an ABy Michelle Ceballos A movie without a soundtrack is no movie at all. The music always creates the

mood and sets the foundation for the movie. It creates suspense, causes terror, andgives hope. Movie scores have always been an essential element to the quality of amovie. They often make you feel a certain way or even convey messages that cannotbe expressed with mere words or even actions on screen. Below are some of thegreatest examples of how a movie’s soundtrack can make the greatest difference. These movies were all incredible, but it’s hard to imagine any of these movies with-out the memorable songs that accompany them.

Rocky: This score definitely deserves its spot on the list of all time greats. Thesound of those trumpets when Rocky Balboa is striving to get into shape for thegreatest match of his life, or when he actually wins it, is unforgettable. This score wascomposed by Bill Conti.

Star Wars: Just the first of John Williams’ many musical masterpieces, the StarWars theme song is probably the most recognized movie song ever. Anybody cho-sen at random could probably hum every note. Whether it be the opening credits ofevery movie in the saga, or during the most pivotal moments throughout the films, this song gives you the feeling that you are truly on an adventure, in a galaxy far, faraway.

Indiana Jones: Another by John Williams has got to be the Indiana Jonestheme. The adventurous feel of the score puts you right next to Indy in all the action. After watching the movie, you will be singing it for days. And if you ever hear itagain, you’ll be directly transported to the world of Indiana Jones. You will think ofthe giant rolling boulder, the Holy Grail, and most of all, Indy barely saving his handfrom a crushing wall only to rescue his hat.

Titanic: James Horner does an amazing job with the score of Titanic. Otherworks of his include the incredible music from Legends of the Fall. The “TitanicHymn to the Sea” is the theme song played throughout the most romantic and themost tragic scenes of the movie. The unforgettable score was played during thefamous scene where Jack and Rose are together at the point of the ship, and alsoduring the final scene when Rose is reunited with the Titanic.

People often search for something in life that they willbe passionate about. Many can continue searching for theirentire lives. But for the lucky ones, like Rodolfo Leyva, thejourney was and continues to be a success.

Music had always been part of 17-year old seniorRodolfo Leyva, but it wasn’t until about two years ago thatmusic production became his passion.

“I kind of always knew that music would be a big partof my life” said Leyva.

Rodolfo always had a way with technology. He neverneeded help from anyone in figuring out how to work music

programs in the computer. Following his dream to producetook a lot of effort, mostly because of his inability to affordmuch of the equipment needed to mix music. Due to it beingexpensive, for about a year he had to figure out differentalternatives to music production equipment and succeededat doing so. At one point, he was finally able to afford hisown piano and began to produce not only covers of differ-ent songs, but original pieces, also. He has previouslyworked with Rafael Leyva under the name RL Productions. They both collaborated on uncountable tracks and still con-tinue to do so but are currently concentrating more on solo

projects. Leyva has made his music known mostly on thepage myspace.com. His tracks posted on the page include“Love Lockdown,” a remixed “Let It Rock” by KevinRudolph, along with many other remixes and originals.

Though he lacks much of the things needed to be-come a professional producer at the moment, he cannot beclassified as an amateur. He is passionate about his dream, and knows that although it will take hard work to become awell-known icon in the music business, he will not give up,and knows that he will somehow get there. The skeptics would call this reck-less behavior, but to people like David Belle, creator of the acclaimed sport Le Parkour, treating an entire city as a playground is anart form.

By Jose RojasAfter tipping off last Thursday,

this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketballtournament has already eliminated 48teams and only the strongest have madeit to the Sweet Sixteen. Top seed Louisville hasproved they deserve the top spot by playing solidly inthe first two rounds of the tournament. However, the Uof A Wildcats have defied all predictions of an earlyelimination and will be playing the Cardinals for a chanceto play in the regional finals. Last year’s champion, the

Kansas Jayhawks will be playingthe Michigan State Spartans insearch of another title.

In the West Region, theUConn Huskies will be looking todefeat the Purdue Boilermakers andmake it to Final Four. However the

red-hot Memphis Tigers will be looking to shut the dooron the Huskies after taking care of the Missouri Tigers, however if Mizzou continues to play hard, it’ll be a toughgame to predict.

Possibly the toughestbracket in the Sweet Sixteen, theEast Region will be pitting four topteams against each other. Pitts-burgh will be tipping off againstXavier University and the DukeBluedevils will square off withVillanova. The two teams thatmove on will have a tough game to win the region title.

And last but not least, the South bracket has thedominating Tyler Hansbrough and the UNC Tarheels

playing against the Gonzaga Bull-dogs and the seemingly unstop-pable Oklahoma Sooners, underthe lead of Blake Griffin, againstthe Syracuse Orangemen.
