FORTNIGHTLY On Even Weeks, Tuesday at 2:30pm

Canteen closed Monday

and Tuesdays.

On Monday Mrs Dyszel took a band of very excited School Captains, Vice-Captains and prefects to the National Young Leaders Day where they had an excellent day being inspired in leadership.

It was an excellent opportunity for our students to hear from young leaders of Australia, and to see where leadership can take them into the future. Our students showed their leadership, were excellent ambassadors, and a real credit to their families and our school . Well done leaders!

During the last few days of last week, and for the next few days of this week, parents and carers have been (and are) meeting with teachers to discuss the manner in which their children have settled into school this year. This opportunity to speak with teachers regarding progress to date in learning, concerns or specific interests, together with the implementation of new syllabus and its impact on learning outcomes, is an important part of our school community working together to support all our student needs. The expertise and efforts of our teachers in preparing for these individual interviews and the commitment by families to attend is greatly valued and reflects the continued partnership we build as a learning community. Thank you one and all for your support of

this valuable initiative of our dedicated staff.

Congratulations to Kaili who competed at the 2015 State Age Surf Lifesaving Championships. Her Elouera U8 Wade Relay Team finished in 2nd place and received a silver medal in recognition of their achievement. It is great to see our students achieve successes, both at school and in the wider community.

We are proud of you Kaili !

We wish Mr Rick Moriarty and Mrs Hazel Dryburgh all the best for their

long service leave!

Mr Moriarty plans to spend time down south, and to relax and enjoy life as he looks forward towards his retirement. Mr Moriarty has been a part of our school since 1991, and is familiar to many families of the area. I am sure you will join me in wishing him all the very best for his

well deserved rest.

Mrs Dryburgh is also taking a well deserved break from the busy-ness of the school office and will be enjoying her break for a few months. She too is wished all the very best for her well deserved break. We will

miss her smiling face and helpfulness in our Office area!

Congratulations Kaili

As we head into the school holidays we hope that everyone has a happy and safe holiday break. We hope that children remember to continue to read to make the most of their current levels of achievement and we look forward to hearing about the holiday break upon the return to school in Term 2, which commences for students on Tuesday 21 April, 2015.

Wellbeing can be defined as the condition of being contented, healthy, or successful; and is a welfare matter. Of course we want all students of our school to feel happy to

be here, healthy and successful learners.

Helping students to focus on their wellbeing, are the focus points on our award system where students aim towards improving levels of responsibility for looking after themselves and taking care of others, to make safe choices—ensuring they act in a manner that does not put themselves or others in danger, being sensible in their choices and actions, taking care of the environment in which they live, work and play

and using strategies to build their resilience.

Wellbeing can be related to many aspects of our lives— having a group of friends can help us to have a sense of belonging and can improve our sense of well-being. Having a healthy self esteem and optimistic outlook—where we look for the positives which are occurring in our lives can help us to feel good about our life and ourselves and therefore impact our sense of well-being. Being in a pleasant environment can help to lift our spirits and sense of wellbeing and hence we try to make our school an

appealing place for students to be.

At school our aim is to be increasingly supporting students to develop skills in being able to identify personal goals for success. These need to be both realistic and achievable, so as a child aims towards these goals and succeeds, they increase their

sense of personal wellbeing.

We also support students to build friendship skills and to build their self esteem as we are aware how important these factors can be to having a sense of personal worth and

success.

Continuing to build skills in the students of our school means they can take some important steps towards knowing they too can impact their own sense of wellbeing —

an important skill for life.

Happy and Safe Holidays Everyone

Please return underwear and other clothing provided to your child when they have had an “accident”. We have a very limited supply of items to use for this purpose and when these items have not been returned we find we are unable to help the next child with the correct size.

Throughout the school year, teachers focus on developing skills to building positive relationships among peers— some children learn these through experience and others need to be taught these skills specifically in order to apply them. The focus of our teaching points will last for blocks of two weeks, and will be placed in the newsletter

Social Skills Topic 2:

Including Others

Parents, we ask that you too go through these skills with your children, and discuss the dos and don’ts. Perhaps you can ask them if they have tried some of the strategies and what the result was. Children learn best when they are supported from both school and home with a consistent message. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Practise to be a journalist

This website could definitely make practising writing and spelling more interesting for all of us. Make a newspaper

clipping with your own headline and story. Your child may even start imagining themselves as a publisher or

journalist. http://www.fodey.com/generators/newspaper/snippet.asp

The crossing on Cambria Avenue is manned from 8.30—9.30am and 2.45—3.45pm by the appointed RTM Crossing Supervisor who will open the Cambrai gate at 3.20pm. Please do not ask for this gate to be opened early If you need to come in earlier, please come through the Office. The other school gates will be opened shortly after the bell at 3.30 by the teacher on duty. Please be patient as the teacher needs to take care of her class and make his/her way to the gate. Please note that the Dernancourt gate will be closed just before the bell in the mornings for safety reasons .

Dos

Remember that if you refuse to allow others

to join your games, you will hurt their

feelings. Feelings are important!

Look around you and see if anyone looks like

they would like to be part of your game. They

may show this by asking if they can play or

by just standing near by themselves.

Smile and say something like “Why don’t you

play too?”, in a friendly voice.

Find ways to make the game or activity adapt

or change to allow another person to play or

take turns to play.

Don’ts

Don’t ignore people who may like to be

included in your game.

Don’t think that your group of friends will be

wrecked if you invite someone else in to join

your games, sometimes.

Engadine Public School will be having a special ceremony to commemorate the 100 years since the ANZACS landed at Gallipoli and fought for the freedom of our land. The Spirit of the Anzacs was strong at that time and lives on today. Our school service will commence at 12:15 pm on Friday 24 April, 2015. We will be looking for floral tributes for this special event. Leading up to this event we will have a memorabilia display and discussion time for the students on April 23. This display is at a cost of $3 per student. This display and opportunity to see real medals, army outfits and equipment is hoped to make the celebrations on Friday more relevant to the children’s understanding.

The school is also invited to take part in the community march on April 19, 2015. This march is to commence at the water tower, and will be led by school leaders. Marchers Assembly Area : John Keenan Park (Water Tanks) Old Princes Highway, Engadine Forming Up Time: 1.55 PM Step Off Time: 2.15 pm

As this is a special occasion commemorating 100 years of the Spirit of the Anzacs, it would be great to have a representative contingent of school students—dressed in school uniform, representing our school. School staff will be available to support the children. Additonally, a Special Centenary of ANZAC Dawn Service will be conducted on Saturday 25th April 2015 commencing at 5.30am at the Engadine Community War Memorial in the Engadine Town Square.

Again, school leaders will be representing the school at this ceremony. It would be lovely for them to have the support of their peers .

Last years leaders felt it was a valuable opportunity to represent our school, and be part of the community celebrations—as a school we were very proud of the manner in which they conducted themselves—they were excellent ambassadors for our school community.
