Welcome to the new worldof work
We are surrounded by bureaucrats, note takers, literalists, TGIF employees, map followers, andpeople afraid to speak up.
We are o en led by managers who do what is
best for themselves, not what is best for yourcustomers or your brand.
Processes are too o en aligned around what isbest for the company, not your customers.
We spend way too much ?me in mee?ngs, anddoing and re-doing Power Point presenta?ons.
We try too hard to be liked by businesscolleagues because we are o en graded on
how well we get along with others.

How did we get here
The economy and high unemployment ratehave led to fearful employees who will doanything to keep their jobs.
Matrix organiza?ons spread decisionmaking. Agreeing with the crowd, even ifthey are wrong, is o en the only course ofac?on.
Too many employees are evaluated on howthey get along with others within theirorganiza?on. This includes ResistanceLeaders and Lizard Brains.

On top of all this, consumerbehavior also is changing
Consumers have changed theirbehavior as a result of therecession.
They are not loyal or cheapcommodi?es any more.
They have become more skep?cal of
tradi?onal marke?ng and have morepower than marketers realize or givethem credit for.

Employees who want to clear
projects from their desks and getthem done even if it means not doingthem right.
The Resistance loves processes andfollowing rules.
Consumers know which brands value
them as people and which ones seethem as prot centers.

The irony of all this is
What companies desperately need noware indispensable employees who areoriginal thinkers, provocateurs, and
people who care about what they doand how it impacts customers.
We need marketers who can lead, salespeople who are willing to make ahuman connec?on, passionate changemakers willing to be shunned to make apoint.
Down with the Resistance !!!!!

Working in corporate Americacan be challenging today
The working middle class is suffering rightnow:
Wages are stagnant
Job security is gone
More work with less people equals morestress
Its easier for companies to turn employeesinto replaceable cogs in a vast machine.
The easier people are to replace, the lessthey need to be paid.

The only way to stand out is tobecome indispensible
The only way to get what you are worth is to stand out, to exertemo?onal labor, to be seen as indispensible, and to produce interac?onsthat organiza?ons and people care about.
If you want a job where its okay to follow the rules, dont be surprised ifyou get a job where following the rules is all you get to do.

Fearless, reckless, and fecklessOrganiza?ons go out of their way to seek out people who arefearless, but they also go out of their way to weed out thereckless. Fearless means unafraid of things that one shouldnt be
afraid of, like: Giving a presenta?on to an important customer without losing
a nights sleep. Taking intellectual risks and forging new paths.
Reckless means rushing into places that only a fool wouldgo.
It leads to big problems and can cost your company a lot ofmoney.
Reckless is what led to the mortgage and liquidity crisis.
Feckless is ineffec?ve, indifferent and lazy. Ill do just what my job requires me to do even though I could
do be>er I dont care, it will never work anyway
