Art Group Wanstead member Teresa Witz – an artist at Heathrow's T5 Gallery – is one of many showing her work during this month's Art Trail Wanstead, which runs from 7 to 22 September. One of Teresa's main art themes has been analysing iconic status. Her latest project for the airport gallery has involved painting a series of historical portraits on cabinets with tromp-l'oeil details creating elaborate picture frame effects. Inside
each cabinet, another painting is housed, suggesting different layers of significance. The work, pictured
here, is on show at Heathrow this month. Teresa will also display her art at Majestic Wine Warehouse
on the High Street during the trail, when the talents of local artists will be on show throughout Wanstead.

Local GCSEs buck trend Students and teachers from Wanstead High School were celebrating a year-on-year improvement in GCSE results last month, bucking the national trend, which saw a 1.3% drop in students achieving A* to C grades. Results across Redbridge at large remained the same as 2012, with 70% of students achieving A* to C grades, including English and maths, and 87% securing five A* to C grades (excluding English and maths). A total of 3,404 students took GCSE exams this year, up from 3,313 last year.
Redbridge Council have frozen the price of school meals at £2 a day for the next three years, following negotiations with catering service provider ISS Facility Services Education. Councillor Alan Weinberg said: "Keeping the price low, and guaranteeing it until 2016, not only shows we understand the financial strains our residents face in these times of austerity, it also means that for a tenner a week parents know their children are getting a freshly-cooked, healthy, balanced meal."

Open House London 2013: a celebration of architecture
Open House London is an annual celebration of the buildings and places where we live and work. This year, over 800 landmarks across the capital will be taking part, including 18 within Redbridge, providing a unique opportunity to explore architecture within the local area
and across London for free. Participating venues, which include the Grade II* listed Christ Church and the Grade II listed Sukkat Shalom Reform Synagogue in Wanstead, will open their doors on the weekend of 21 and 22 September. Visit wavidi.com/open
Schooldays, toys and games: memorabilia needed
In preparation for UK Older People's Day celebrations next month, Age UK Redbridge are planning an exhibition of childhood memorabilia at Wanstead's Allan Burgess Centre. "We would like people to contribute any photos, toys, schoolbooks,
games, postcards, or bits of uniform," said centre manager Jackie Balman. The display, which opens on 30 September, will be accompanied by a week of school-based activities, including a singalong with the choir from Wanstead High School. Call 020 8989 6338

Jubilee Pond work celebrated by community group
Wanstead front garden declared best in Redbridge
A front garden on The Avenue in Wanstead, tended by owner Mrs Ludlow, was announced as the winner of the Best Front Garden category in the annual Redbridge in Bloom competition last month. Mrs Ludlow, who has been entering the competition for
more years than she can remember, was awarded second place in 2011. Judges scored the gardens on their use of flowers and shrubs, awarding marks for colour, quality and layout. An award ceremony will take place at Valentines Mansion on 26 September.
Local community group the Lakehouse Lake Project (LLP) celebrated the recent improvement works at Jubilee Pond, Wanstead Flats last month, with a tour of the site. Some 50 people joined the walk around the pond, looking at the new accessible trail,
benches, cycle racks and picnic tables. LLP Chair Dennis Stone said: "We're pleased to have had the opportunity to be involved and influence the project from beginning to end." A pond dip will take place from a newly-constructed platform on 15 September.
Tapas, music and dreamsAn evening of tapas and music will take place at Wanstead's Dama De Elche Spanish restaurant next month in aid of Hopes and Dreams, a charity that aims to make dreams come true for terminally-ill children. The event, which is being organised by Councillor Paul Canal, will take place on 15 October, featuring local singer Mick Terry and Heart DJ Paul Hollins. Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are £25 each, with Barclays pledging to double the total amount raised. Call 020 8708 0027
A jazz trio will provide musical accompaniment to painting and floristry demonstrations during an open day at Wanstead House this month. Art, calligraphy and fashion produced by students attending adult education classes at the community venue will also be on display. The event, which takes place from 1pm to 4pm on 22 September, will highlight the diverse range of activities available at Wanstead House. Home-made cakes and refreshments will be available. Wanstead Police Station scheduled to close this month
Wanstead Police Station, which was deemed to be surplus to requirements by the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime, is scheduled to close this month. Plans for the closure were announced earlier this year as part of a range of measures to save the Metropolitan
Police £500m by 2015. With officers being relocated to Woodford and Ilford, the future of the late-19th-century station building is now uncertain. Police have said they will set up access points for the public to report crime in person at alternative venues, such as Wanstead House.

New arrivals: counting the waterbirds in Wanstead Park
Why 'lower plants' are of high importance in nature
Botanist Tricia Moxey will be giving a presentation at Wanstead House this month on the important role played by easily-overlooked 'lower plants', which includes algae, mosses and ferns. These are plants that do not produce showy colourful flowers, but
reproduce via spores. Many are colonisers of bare ground, but others are restricted to certain habitats, such as tree trunks or the edges of fields. The lecture will take place on 30 September at 8pm (Wren Wildlife Group members: £1; non-members: £2). Call 07505 482 328
The Wren Wildlife Group will be conducting its first autumn count of the waterbirds in Wanstead Park this month. "Every autumn, Wanstead's resident waterbirds, such as Mallards and Coots, are supplemented by those moving away from continental
Europe – including Pochards and Gadwalls – where temperatures begin to plummet," said group member Tim Harris. The count will take place on Sunday 22 September and those wishing to take part should meet at the park's refreshment kiosk at 10am.
Designing organicallyKathy Taylor, a garden designer from Wanstead, has been announced as one of the four finalists in the Raymond Blanc Heritage Garden competition. The contest – which was conceived by Garden Organic, a national charity promoting organic gardening methods – will see the winning design sited within the kitchen gardens at Raymond Blanc's two-Michelin-star restaurant Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons. Kathy's design, The Bean There garden, is based on the shape of a runner bean as it germinates.
This month will see a week of comedy, photography, music and picnics take place throughout Wanstead, as local residents come together to initiate the inaugural Wanstead Fringe. The events, which will take place at various venues, are being organised by a number people who each answered the call to take part and 'do something' in the community. The Wanstead Fringe will run from 7 to 14 September, designed to coincide with the Wanstead Festival on 15 September. Visit wavidi.com/fringe

Although I was born in England, from the age of 18 months I went out to live in east Africa with my parents. I grew
up in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and, later on, in South Africa. From the earliest time I can remember, I always wanted to write. At the age of 18, I started off as a lowly cub reporter on the Daily News in Durban, South Africa, and from there graduated to writing features; I was sent to interview all the famous singers who came out on tour in the 1960s – a fabulous job for someone who was young and quite star-struck!
I was also involved in theatre and did a lot of performance poetry; I am now often asked to fill commissions for people, creating unique poems for their special occasions. I try to help as many folk as I can to enjoy poetry by encouraging them to write their own verse. I also coach people to prepare and give speeches at meetings and on other important occasions.
Some years ago, I was asked to record one of my poems for the Age UK website. This was The Last of the Old Victorians, a piece about my intrepid grandma, Alice Woods, who was born in 1893; alas, she is no longer with us, but remains an inspiration. Janet West, Age UK's Redbridge Voices of Experience co-ordinator, found the poem on the website and got in touch to ask permission to reproduce it in their newsletter, and following on from this, it was suggested that perhaps I could lead a poetry session at the Allan Burgess Centre in Wanstead.
The first session went so well that it was decided to make it a regular event; thus the Redbridge Rhymesters were born, and we are now in our fourth year. The poetry group meets every three months or so and sessions last for about an hour. People can bring along a favourite poem for me to read, but I also encourage everyone to write their own poetry and to perform it on the day. During the course of each meeting, a group poem is created, using ideas from
everyone present. After every meeting I produce a pamphlet that includes all the original poems read and written at the session. Since the Redbridge Rhymesters began, the pamphlet has doubled in size and is a nice reminder of what has been achieved. Apart from creating their own work, I like to encourage everyone to perform their poetry, if they would like to. All the ladies and gentlemen who attend are very talented and creative, but of course if they just want to sit back and relax and enjoy hearing the poems read out, that is fine, too.
We decide on a theme for each meeting. Over the years, topics have included diamonds, sport, scenes from the senses, weddings, winter warmers and, back in June, summer days. Our theme for September will be transport, which should give great scope for imaginative poetry about all sorts of transport, both ancient and modern. As a lover of steam trains, I know where my efforts will be directed.
Redbridge RhymestersAlexandra Wilde, organiser of over-50s poetry group the Redbridge Rhymesters, presents some of her verses and invites you to join her this month for a morning of transport-themed recitals
Alexandra will be hosting a meeting of the Redbridge Rhymesters at 11am on Tuesday 24 September at the Allan Burgess Centre (over 50's only). Call 020 8989 6338 or email [email protected]

The Last of the Old VictoriansThe last of the old Victorians… With her, they broke the mould; Advanced in years she may have been, But she was never old!
Adventurous to the last degree, Intrepid as she flew In jumbo jets and steam railway sets, But fear she never knew.
She said: "When you reach my age, You know the worst may never be." She did not rise to meet disaster, But accepted stoically
Everything that life threw at her, And though at times she cried When memories engulfed her, Usually she just smiled.
She was the one who went abroad, Adventurous to the core; Who learned to smoke at 52 And shocked the family bore
By her outspoken truthfulness; She never held it back But said what she thought – it came out pat – Perhaps she lacked a little tact!
But you could always turn to her, She was always on your side: Encouraging, suggesting, "Take that helter-skelter ride!"
The last of the old Victorians… With her they broke the mould; Advanced in years she may have been, But she was never old!(A poem about Alexandra Wilde's grandmother)
Steam DreamPulsing, throbbing, in my mind, insistently demanding; forged black steel and shiny rods, strong metal, all expanding.
Cold, hard coal lies thigh-high deep, cascading down the tender; the fireman thrusts, his shovel sweeps, the coals soon turn to ember.
Black steel, white smoke; she slowly pulls the coaches painted fair; she works and beats the Washford Bank and breathes the crystal air.
And with a heart of fire and flame the roaring engine goes; through cuttings, banks and long, steep straights, the train, like water, flows.
Lonely blows the whistle now; the train stands at the station. No guard to shout “All aboard!” for distant destination.
The engine stands so cold and still with no life left, it seems; yet with the touch and kiss of steam will be in all my dreams.(Written for the West Somerset Railway, which operates services using both heritage steam and diesel trains)
Dream On, Cover Girl!I can just see me – seductively Draped across a Jag (Type E) – The epitome of every chap’s desire On that cover of Esquire!
I only need half a chance To lead those guys a merry dance; To prove, although I may be older: Oh, boy! Can I still smoulder!(Prize-winning poem from a competition with the theme the joy of ageing)
A Centenary SonnetA hundred years’ commemoration The CLR in celebration! From Ruislip, Acton to Wood Lane – The disused station of the line; From here the CLR began And over bridges, time will span Across the years to lead us back We mark our progress on the track.
As through the starlit hours we ride On curved steel ribbon rails we glide; Until at last, with flushing grey The dawn fires up another day; With lasting memories of this night A Central London Rail delight!(Written for the Central London Railway – now the Central Line – overnight railtour in July 2000)

This month sees the return of Art Trail Wanstead, a free community event that can be enjoyed by both local residents
and visitors from further afield. The 16-day trail, organised by Art Group Wanstead, aims to give local artists a chance to show their work and local people a chance to enjoy a community event close to home. It also acts as a magnet for people to visit our local High Street to appreciate the shops, restaurants, cafés and beautiful settings that Wanstead has to offer.
Running from 7 to 22 September, you'll see work on and around the High Street and in local community centres to surprise and entertain you. It will also include work by children and students at local schools.
Most of the work by adults is for sale, and will cover a range of prices as participants include both amateurs and successful professional artists. This may even be your chance to buy artwork from a big name of the future.
There is no recommended starting and finishing points on the easy-to-follow trail. Just do sections as you wish over the course of the 16 days, or embark on one long art trek. And don't miss the workshop days being organised at Wanstead Library's Churchill hall on 7 and 14 September, which will also include a fascinating range of stalls, involving the local Flamingo Fairs, and a pop-up art trail café.
Members of the public are also invited to attend an art auction on 22 September, the last night of the trail, upstairs at The George, opposite Wanstead Tube station. Lots will include work by leading artists on the trail, and there will be a variety of art forms up for sale. Half the final hammer price will go to Art Group Wanstead. Some of the work to be auctioned will be on show at The George during the trail. Other pieces will be on display from 6.15pm that evening, with the auction starting at 7pm. Anyone attending the auction is also invited to join the end-of-trail party, which will follow on from the bidding.
Seeing & doingOrganisers of this month's art trail are hoping to encourage more people in the local community to not only view the works on show, but to get involved in the workshops as well Donna Mizzi reports
Art Trail Wanstead 2013 will include two workshop days in Wanstead Library's foyer and Churchill hall, Spratt Hall Road, with activities for children and adults.
Saturday 7 September, 10.30am to 4pm The attractions will include: a drop-in life drawing class (11am to 1.30pm); a drawing demonstration (2.30pm to 4pm); all-day pottery-making; inventive collage for children; and demonstrations of paper-cutting and stone-carving. From 11am to 2pm visitors will also be invited to add artistic details to a banner for the art trail, which will be displayed at the Wanstead Festival the following weekend.
Saturday 14 September, 11am to 1.30pm The attractions will include: a drop-in art session (11.30am to 1.30pm); all-day pottery making; beading for jewellery; craft-making tips; soap carving; brooch making; card making (11.30am to 2pm); and sugar craft.
Reasonable charges will be made to cover costs (donations will also be appreciated). Visit www.artgroupwanstead.com

Arrive early to soak up any remaining sun and enjoy cycling activities, dance, community stalls, family activities, street entertainers, arts and crafts and a brand new puppet show called Dotty the Dragon from the Blunderbus Theatre Company. If it all gets too much, then why not grab a deckchair and relax with friends as you enjoy the selection of live bands, including Wanstead High School's very own rock band, the Metro Gnomes.
This year's event will see the return of some festival family favourites, such as the vintage and classic car show and a climbing wall. In addition, we are also delighted to be welcoming new community exhibits, a small range of refreshments and an array of interactive demonstrations from local organisations and council teams, including flower arranging workshops, recycling activities, story time and cupcake decorating.
If that isn't enough, there will also be a selection of sports taster sessions available to form part of the Community Games programme – a legacy of London 2012 – and a collaborative music performance from Strung Out and east London community music group WAM (Walthamstow Acoustic Massive). Touring a limited number of local summer festivals – supported by Arts Council England and the BBC Performing Arts Fund – this 50-piece choir will be performing an interactive singalong-athon entitled Express Symphony, with instruments including ukuleles and banjos.
Filled with live music, diverse culture and a range of family entertainment combined with a sporting spirit, the Wanstead Festival is a delightful way to enjoy the end of the summer locally. So, why not join us and your neighbours to celebrate and mingle with Wanstead's finest?
Here comes the funTo mark the end of a glorious summer in style, Redbridge Council's Area One Committee and the Events Team at Vision RCL invite you to join them at this month's Wanstead Festival on Christchurch Green
The Wanstead Festival takes place from 11am to 5pm on Sunday 15 September on Christchurch Green. The event is free to attend and is provided courtesy of the London Borough of Redbridge Area One Committee and the Events Team at Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure. Totally Locally is about opening the local community's eyes to the great independent shops and businesses in
our towns and high streets. It's also about people. People who care about what they do, what they grow and what they make. And people like us, who care about what we buy and where we shop. It's about a collective responsibility to support our local businesses. Because when we do, our towns and high streets thrive and, more importantly, they survive.
So what are the benefits? Bringing more footfall to our towns, supporting our local independent businesses, helping the environment and keeping jobs sustainable, to name a few.
Totally Locally works through a common brand across our towns and high streets, using posters, leaflets and individual signs in shops and businesses promoting their specialisms or unique selling points. It's a chance to highlight the differences between online retailers, large chains and the independent shops and businesses on our doorstep.
Totally Locally will be launched at this year's Wanstead Festival on Sunday 15 September. The festival is not a commercial venture, but retailers in Wanstead will be on hand to raise awareness of our High Street. Businesses will be in a marquee, where they will be a delivering a series of demonstrations throughout the day on things such as creating a seasonal autumn pudding, making sushi, Christmas ideas, decorating cupcakes and designing jewellery, to name a few. At the same time, they will be running a giant Snakes and Ladders game for people to get involved in. This game will have an environmental energy-saving message (players go up a ladder if they switch off a light, for example) and will help to promote Redbridge Council's Green Business initiative.
The festival will provide a great opportunity to find out more about the Totally Locally campaign and how you can help to make it a success in
Wanstead. Members of the Wanstead Business Partnership and Redbridge Council officers will be available throughout the day to promote the scheme and answer any questions you may have.
After the festival, the Totally Locally campaign will be rolled out across the borough, with a poster campaign and engagement with businesses and retailers in the other town centres. This is a good time to launch the campaign in the run up to the Christmas trading period and faith festivals starting in October, reminding everyone of the importance of supporting your local high street by shopping locally and buying locally.
Totally Locally The Wanstead Business Partnership are getting behind the Totally Locally campaign, a national initiative that aims to raise awareness of the importance of supporting local independent retailers

After several years of review, and against the recommendation of the Legal Services Board Review, the government
decided not to regulate Will writing. This was a huge disappointment to the many Will writers who give educated and professional advice to their clients, allowing those who are unqualified to continue to operate, possibly without any insurance.
I am pleased to say that I am a member of the Institute of Professional Willwriters (IPW) and have to comply with its code of conduct, part of which is to have a minimum of £2 million of professional indemnity insurance and to undergo a minimum of 12 hours Continuous Professional Development each year. In fact, I arrange training sessions for the IPW in the east and north London areas.
On the subject of a code of conduct, the IPW's code was accepted by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) as one of only 10 in the country that they approved under their Consumer Codes Approval Scheme. Membership of an approved code (both by organisations and individuals) can be checked on the TSI website.
In his budget, the Chancellor announced changes to the way care home fees are to be allocated to individuals after April 2016. These changes are currently under discussion (both in Parliament in the Care Bill and outside Parliament in a formal consultation process) and are certainly an improvement on the current situation. But the upshot of the changes is that most people will still have to sell their house to pay for care. The proposals are that individuals will have the amount they pay for the care element of their fees capped at £72,000 in their lifetime (in fact the amount the individual has to pay may well be less than £72,000, depending on circumstances). The local authority will decide what the cost of care is in each individual circumstance. There is no cap on the "hotel" element of care fees, such as accommodation and food, and this element is expected to work
out at about £12,000 per annum. The limit on the value of assets an individual has, above which the local authority does not contribute to care fees, is being raised from £23,250 to £118,000 (£27,000 if you are receiving care in your own home). So owning a house in Wanstead almost certainly means that you are over this limit and the local authority will only contribute to care fees once the £72,000 cap on the care element of fees has been reached.
An individual's income also forms part of the assessment of how much the local authority will contribute, so if the house is the only asset it will still have to be sold to pay for fees. The Care Bill will ensure that the local authority cannot demand that the house be sold immediately, but it will put a charge on the eventual sale price, adding interest during the period the sale is deferred.

Two For Joy's paper-cutting workshops have been a leading
attraction at the prestigious Affordable Art Fairs in
west London
Two For Joy is set to be a big hit at this year's Art Trail Wanstead. Its artist, Stacey Williamson, will open a day of art trail
workshops at Wanstead Library with a free demonstration of her intricate paper-cutting. This will be followed by an open workshop at Images in Frames on the High Street, where some of her work is also being displayed.
Stacey's vibrant and lovingly-made artworks are created with scalpels, paper, inspiration and tons of time and patience. Some of the details in her high-precision work, cut with a swivel-blade knife, are less than one millimetre wide.
Her originals and screen-printed versions are already shown in a number of galleries and shops – a popular, large gallery has just approached her – and she has recently designed artwork in the Slate window space, by the library in Leytonstone, for a Screens in the Wild project – involving Waltham Forest Council – which also incorporates an interactive panel.
Stacey comes from an artistic family, and originally trained as a make-up artist. She only decided to give "paper-cutting a go" less than four years ago, but quickly became hooked, and then in demand. She has had to dramatically cut back the make-up work to make time for her art. Her designs are also sold in card form, and she is often commissioned to do special individual gifts. She has recently completed a major project – a lawyer customer asked her to paint a series of large-scale designs across the walls of his south London apartment.
She has had some other unusual commissions, including creating a paper wedding dress cape to be featured in Unique Bride magazine. That resulted in a reader approaching the artist for a paper wedding veil. Displays of Stacey's work

have also been featured in a wide variety of other magazines.
"If I didn't like people's reactions to my work, I wouldn't do it," says Stacey. She describes her style as: "Magical, almost other worldly; it's escapism from everyday life." Much of the inspiration for her style and subject matter comes from France. She has also created charming storylines to go with her images, and aims to publish books in the future.
Stemming from her projects, she has become one of a handful of artists called in to customise shoes for Toms, a fast-growing international brand that helps a person in need for every sale made. In collaboration with Toms, she also created an elaborate window installation for a surf shop in Cornwall.
Now she's considering working with a recycler of furniture, to present her art in even more new forms. But, next, is a major Two For Joy project that is very close to her heart. She will be working on some special decorations for her own wedding day this autumn.

Having started up back in 2009 with just five students, LIPA 4:19 Wanstead now has over 100 attending on Saturday
mornings at Wanstead High School, where they follow a full curriculum in the performing arts – acting, dancing and singing. Much of our success is due to being affiliated to a recognised educational institution: the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. LIPA was founded by Sir Mark Featherstone-Witty, who also set up the famous Brit School, paving the way for a performing arts education in the UK that is relevant to the contemporary scene.
Interest in our local Wanstead academy has increased significantly over the past four years and we have had to put on extra classes to accommodate the growing numbers. We go to great lengths to choose the right teachers, so much so that I have been known to invite teachers to leave if they simply do not deliver to the LIPA standard. But I must confess, it can sometimes be difficult to manage our teachers, who are successful performers in their own right. Just recently, the acting teacher Josh Miles had a sabbatical so he could perform at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield in Alan Bennett's The History Boys, while dance teacher Mabel Clements also enjoyed success earlier this year in Ibsen's A Doll's House at the Young Vic.
Performing opportunities are not just limited to our teachers. We also run a successful theatrical agency alongside the academy, which has afforded West End opportunities to our students as well, such as Louis Suc, who had an extended run last year at the Cambridge Theatre in the highly successful production of Matilda! The Musical. Louis is now one of the four boys playing the lead role in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and getting fabulous reviews: 'Louis Suc is the performer I caught, and he was utterly adorable', said the Los Angeles Times, while Indie London commented: 'Louis Suc… imbued Charlie with warmth and generosity'.
LIPA 4:19 Wanstead has also forged links with local amateur groups. Just recently, a number of our students performed at the Kenneth Moore Theatre in Seussical the Musical (Forest Musical Productions) and more will be performing in Oliver! at Lopping Hall, Loughton this autumn.
I was also delighted for LIPA 4:19 Wanstead to be deemed the most successful academy outside the main institute in Liverpool when I attended a recent conference of principals along with our patron Sir Paul McCartney.
Students attend LIPA 4:19 Wanstead for a variety of reasons, some are looking to develop their performance skills, while others want to build their confidence, but all come just for the fun of it. We believe that the performing arts are for everyone. There are no auditions and all are welcome to join.
Performing arts school LIPA 4:19 Wanstead has become an established part of the community Principal Michael Da Silva Pearce outlines the successes enjoyed on stage by their students and teachers alike

Before 1986, solicitors in England and Wales were prohibited from advertising their services. A request for a business
card, for example, was quite likely to be met with the sort of dumbfounded response as if you had just picked your lawyer's pocket and kicked his dog for good measure. Some of the old hands consider the decision of the Law Society to allow advertising as being the point when the profession started to become a business.
That particular genie is out of the bottle and not going back in again anytime soon. We live in an age where "commoditisation" is the buzz word, as Professor Richard Susskind puts it: "A world of virtual courts, internet-based global legal businesses, online document production, legal process outsourcing and web-based simulated practice." What future then for the traditional high street law practice?
We have all had the experience of what commoditisation can mean. For example, a couple of years ago I changed my dentist because I couldn't bear being deafened by the sound of the cash register every time I made a visit – "ka-ching" was still ringing in my ears as I squeezed out of the door and past his new BMW.
Also, if you have ever used one of those drop-in GP services at a private hospital, try getting out without paying the bill. The receptionist appears to be a retired all-in wrestler who glowers at you in a make-my-day sort of way and your hand shakes as you key in your pin number. You pray to goodness your card won't be declined since a choke slam followed by a full nelson isn't going to do much for the bad back that you originally came in for.
With companies like Tesco and the Co-op aggressively entering the legal market, commoditisation is coming to a checkout near you: "Would you like some cash back this morning, madam? How about a conveyance or a cross-border agreement?"
There is a serious point here: I want to feel like a patient and not a consumer when I visit my medical professional, and the same is true for those that require the services of a lawyer. Clients not only need to be sure that the advice they are given is right for them and not just convenient (or cost-effective) for the lawyer, they also expect to be treated professionally. A client recently congratulated our firm for not giving him the hard sell when he rang for a quotation.
Modern law firms are not Luddites – we can't afford to be. As much as we might prefer not to compete for business in cyberspace, we have to provide the services that the next generation of clients have come to expect. But that doesn't mean abandoning old-fashioned virtues, such as courtesy and client care. The old sales adage that "people buy people first" still holds true – we know that if we can win the trust and confidence of our clients and continue to provide them with excellent service, there is still a future in the high street. Get it wrong and we will all end up working for Tesco.
High street lawJulian Blake, practice manager at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, takes a light-hearted look at the future of his profession, which, he says, still has a future on the high street despite growing online competition

Wanstead storiesPaul Michaelides
Mike Edwards has been compiling images and stories of people in Wanstead for a book entitled Shelf Life E11 E4 E18, which highlights local businesses that have stood the test of time The stories, all in the words of the subjects, offer a fascinating look at local life over the last 50 years In the fifth of a series of extracts, hairdresser Paul Michaelides tells his story

55September 2013
I was born in Wanstead in 1971 and went to local schools, but I helped my dad, who was, by then, in the rag trade in the
East End, buying and selling 'cabbages'. No, not the vegetable, but the insider's name for the excess garments made by big manufacturers.
Both Mum and Dad and my Uncle Steve were all hairdressers at one time, and so Dad pushed me into the business when I was 18, to get me away from cabbages, I think! I worked my way around several shops in east London, gaining a very useful apprenticeship, before coming to Wanstead Hairdressers 17 years ago to work for Uncle Steve, who had bought this business back in 1969. In fact, even though I bought the business from him, he still came in to cut hair up until a year ago, when he was in his late 70s.
As far as we know, apart from a short time as an office, this building has been a hairdresser's for about 70 years. I've got a photo taken many, many years before that, showing these premises as an empty space between two buildings, which were part of a stable block, so it was effectively an early-day brownfield site urban infill.
The star of the show in our shop are the Belmont Appolo barber chairs, which, as far as I know, were made in the 1930s, and they are still working beautifully. They were certainly here when Uncle Steve moved in, and they are the
sturdy antique versions rather than the modern reproductions. They cope with a huge number of backsides every week – small and large – year in, year out, don't complain, get lots of compliments and still look lovely.
When I was very young, helping out here, I wondered what my uncle was selling to customers on a Friday from the tray marked 'Durex', which was under the counter. But I don't remember him asking the famous phrase: "Anything for the weekend sir?" Barbers were a men's preserve in those days, perhaps up to about the early 1980s. Women wouldn't even consider stepping inside. That's all changed now of course.
We still get queues out the door on a Saturday and, despite there being more competition around, we always seem to have had a good steady flow of work. I always say that we can't possibly cut everyone's hair in Wanstead, so I think we'll be here for years to come.
Despite now living further out, I love this area and the very friendly relationship I have with my customers and other people I know here. But, as I'm on my feet all day, talking, listening and enjoying and concentrating on my work, I'm happy to go home to a quiet life afterwards.

WHAT ARE THEMAIN ADVANTAGES
OF DENTALIMPLANTS ?
l They are asuperior andpermanentalternative todentures
l They look, feeland behave likenatural teeth
l Eating presentsno challenges!
l Cosmeticbenefits caninclude facial re-contouring
l They’re safe –and affordable
l They can greatlyincreaseconfidence andwell-being
DENTAL IMPLANTS offer a permanent and effective solution for a wide rangeof people whose teeth may have been compromised for a variety of reasons. As a substitute for dentures and in other situations, implants are unparalleled,
being the closest thing to natural teeth. Dr Amjad Malik of Woodford House Dental Prac-tice creates and fits implants for patients in all kinds of circumstances.
‘Candidates for implants can be young or old who need better teeth than they findthemselves left with, either as a result of natural wear or ageing, sports or other injuries, orbecause of previous substandard or failing dental work. Recent patients have included ayoung man who had been hit in the mouth by a cricket ball, a teenage girl whose lower jaw collided with a glass bottle during some rather exuberant partying, and quite a fewolder people whose teeth haven’t lasted as well as they’d hoped, or who had previousbridge work that needed replacing with something better. Sometimes it’s just one tooththat needs replacing, and sometimes several. The beauty of implants, apart from theirlongevity, is the fact that not only can they be made to match your original teeth (we canactually make them look better!), but that they behave in exactly the same way as normalteeth and are maintained in the same way too.' While implants are an undoubtedly sound investment for anybody, there are ways of making the process more affordable, where helpful, by means of upgradable options. Beneficial payment plans are also available.
They’re as trouble-free as healthy, natural teeth. Could DENTALIMPLANTS enhanceYOUR life?

I am inspired by the words of Milton Erickson, the father of modern hypnotherapy: "Therapy is often a matter of tipping the
first domino," and: "People do not come into therapy to change their past, but their future." Gabrielle Roth also understood: "If you just set people in motion they'll heal themselves." Mental and emotional healing is not about fixing something, like a hot-water boiler or a broken leg, but setting a living being free to move in a better direction.
I have one overriding objective for virtually all my clients, which is to calm their emotions down so they are more under control. Think of a ship tossing in a storm. The sea has to quieten down before anything else is possible. The same will be true for those who come to me, whatever the particulars of their problem. Their emotions will be out of control – dominated by fears, obsessive thoughts, exhaustion, anger, shame, guilt and so on. And as a result, their self-confidence will have plummeted and they will be stuck and lost.
How do I help get emotions under control and working for, and not against, my clients? There are three main ways.
Explanation Depressions, anxieties and addictions can all be understood as the normal response to an abnormal situation. And if my clients realise that they are not going mad and that there is a way out, well, that is liberating and reduces their emotional arousal almost instantaneously.
Detraumatising, to take the pressure off The majority of people who find their way to me have a painful trauma that is still firing up in their emotional brain, like a bubbling volcano. This trauma could be from many years ago, but the difficulty of living with it now is causing them all kinds of distress and life problems. My task is to identify the memory, even if it may be hard to do, and then to clear the strong emotion attached to it. Most counsellors have no idea how to do this, as just talking about the trauma is rarely the
answer. But permanent relief is surprisingly easy to accomplish in experienced hands, by using hypnotherapy.
Motivating action Human beings are healthiest when they are doing things that help them lead a balanced life – involving work, relationships, meaning and so on. And the stress they are under (be it depressions, anxieties or addictions) will be stopping them doing what they need to do. A key part of rapid healing is therefore to develop a virtuous circle where action and motivation is getting life needs met. In so doing, emotions subside.
Being healed quicklyFast foods and instant communication are a reality of our modern lives, and so too is quick and genuine healing for those lost in depression, anxiety and debilitating addictions, says therapist Andrew Richardson

Wanstead Village Directory66
Following the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, the King's younger brother James, Duke of York, profited greatly
from the forfeiture of estates which had belonged to persons exempted from the Act of Free and General Pardon, Indemnity and Oblivion. One of the forfeited estates was Wanstead, for which Letters Patent were granted on 6 September 1661 to John, Lord Berkeley, Sir Charles Berkeley junior, Knight and Henry Brouncker, Esquire, on the Duke's nomination. As we saw last month, Wanstead had formerly been the property of Sir Henry Mildmay, who, as well as being stripped of his knighthood and estates, had been sentenced to life imprisonment as a regicide.
The Duke of York, who in 1685 was briefly to succeed his brother as King James II of England and Ireland and James VII of Scotland, remains an enigmatic and controversial figure. A brave soldier in his youth, he displayed irresolution and even cowardice in later life. He had a strong interest in religion, converting openly to Roman Catholicism by 1676 despite the political cost, yet in his private life was almost as great a libertine as his brother Charles (James's taste in women was often mocked: Bishop Burnet remarked that his mistresses must have been "given him by his priests as a penance").
Something of a man's character may be seen in his choice of friends, and the individuals he nominated as trustees for his new estates are perhaps revealing in this respect, as well as of the wider moral tone of the Stuart Court.
Lord Berkeley of Stratton had been a royalist soldier. From 1648 he was a close associate of James, and after the Restoration rose to some
In the ninth of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Richard Arnopp tells how the estate passed into royal ownership once more – and ultimately to the family who created the landscape we now know

prominence. According to Lord Clarendon, Berkeley was notorious for spinning incredible tales of his exploits during the Civil Wars, which, through constant retelling, he gave every sign of having come to believe himself. Berkeley is now remembered for at least one thing: he was co-founder, along with Sir George Carteret, of the Colony of New Jersey.
Sir Charles Berkeley, later ennobled, was Lord Berkeley's nephew. He had been an intimate of the Royal Family in exile, and groom of the bedchamber to the Duke from 1656. Though Bishop Burnet described him as being "of no extraordinary parts", he was "of a generous and noble disposition". However, he loyally pandered to the vices of the royal brothers, even to the extent of misguidedly trying to rescue James from his embarrassing promise to marry Anne Hyde, daughter of the future Lord Clarendon, by falsely claiming credit for her pregnancy. In the event, James did marry Anne, to everyone's surprise given the disparity in their respective ranks, and in due course their surviving daughters Mary and Anne were both to ascend the throne.
The remaining trustee was the Hon. Henry Brouncker, later 3rd Viscount Brouncker. He had served as a gentleman of the bedchamber to the Duke of York. Samuel Pepys was not impressed with Brouncker, whom he called: "A pestilent rogue, an atheist, that would have sold his king and country for sixpence, almost." Though undoubtedly debauched and frivolous, Brouncker was not without intelligence and had a reputation as a mathematician, as well as being a famous chess player.
The Duke of York will make a brief reappearance in our story next month, as King, but his direct connection with Wanstead was of brief duration. James retained Wanstead exactly three months and, on 5 December 1661, conveyed it to Sir Robert Brooke, son-in-law to Sir Henry Mildmay.
Brooke paid a consideration of £3,500 to the Duke, £3,500 to the Duke and the trustees and 12d apiece in respect of: "All those the Mannors and Lordshipps of Wanstead and Stonehall with the appurtenaunces in the County of Essex, and all that the capitall mesuage and house of Wanstead aforesaid and the Parke called or knowne by the name of Wanstead Parke, and also the advowson of the Church of Wanstead
aforesaid, and all messuages, lands, etc, belonging thereto, including the great pond in the waste, called 'Aldersbrooke Pond', and all appurtenances in Wanstead, Walthamstow, Ilford, Barking, Woodford and 'Laton', or in any other town or parish in Essex, heretofore knowne, used, taken or reputed to be the estate of Sir Henry Mildmay."
Sir Robert Brooke's parents both came from the merchant class and had connections with the City of London. He had married Mildmay's daughter Anne in 1659, following which he seems to have lived mostly at Wanstead. However, despite his links to one of the late King's judges, Brooke supported the Restoration. Returned for Aldeburgh in the Convention Parliament, the corporation of that town wrote that Brooke: "performed the trust in him reposed, not to us only, but to the public concern of his Majesty with a loyal, faithful and unwearied labour". Knighted for his services to the King in 1660, Brooke was re-elected in 1661, despite being detained in London by smallpox.
Samuel Pepys said that Brooke was "held a considerable person, of a young man, both for sobriety and ability". His staunch and sincere support for the restored Church of England, combined with his independence of judgment, made him widely respected in the Commons. Sadly, his promising career was to be cut short. In the late 1660s, Brooke felt obliged to retire to France "upon the distress of his affairs". He mysteriously drowned while bathing in the River Rhone at Avignon in June 1669.
Brooke's Suffolk property eventually passed to his nephew Sir Charles Blois, the son of his sister and co-heiress Martha. However, in 1673, Wanstead was sold by Brooke's trustees to an ambitious merchant, who had already been living there as a tenant since about 1667, for £11,500. This man was Josiah Child, with whom the history of Wanstead Park as we know it really begins.
Next month we will look at Josiah Child's life, career and family. In the following instalment we will consider his legacy at Wanstead.

Village on showA weekend of traditional village celebrations will take place this month with the return of the Wanstead Village Show and the floral delights of the Christ Church annual flower festival Margaret Adams reports
Wanstead is part of London, yet still retains a village feel, so we decided to revive that special British tradition
of the village show. There are a wide variety of classes for this year's event – which takes place on Saturday 14 September – from cakes to photos and flower arrangements, and special classes for children as well. There will be rosettes for 'Best in Show' as well as for the winners of each class. The stars of last year's inaugural show were undoubtedly the beautifully decorated cupcakes.
As the weather has been so much better this summer, perhaps the fruits, vegetables, herbs or flowers will triumph – but if things haven't quite grown according to plan, don't forget the unusually-shaped fruit or vegetable class will also need entries. New categories this year include: most creative handicraft; an item knitted or sewn; home-baked biscuits; and, for children, an article made from recycled materials.
Money raised from the Wanstead Village Show will go towards charitable projects in Africa, including St James' Hospital in Mantsonyane, which serves one of the poorest regions of Lesotho. The hospital is celebrating its 50th anniversary in October 2013 and Wanstead has sent an annual donation from the very earliest years of its operation. Lesotho has one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world and so the hospital is sadly needed now more than ever.
Please don't think that you need to be a professional to take part in the show. The aim is to enjoy the challenge, have some fun and perhaps even learn some new skills. Those viewing last year were impressed by the talent and creativity of the entrants. If you have ever watched Kirstie Allsop's Handmade Britain on Channel 4 or the BBC's The Great British Bake Off and wished you could have a go, now is your chance.
The annual flower festival will also take place in Christ Church this month on both Saturday 14
and Sunday 15 September. The displays this year have a musicals theme and will be produced by the skilled church flower arranging team. New volunteers are always welcome.
The traditional coffee morning on 14 September offers delicious home-made cakes and ploughman's lunches in the church garden (weather permitting). There will also be a raffle, plants and books for sale and, as usual, a selection of other stalls run by local charities and organisations. New this year will be a Pimms stall and bouncy castle. On 15 September, the day of the Wanstead Festival, the weekend will be rounded off with the annual fun day for all the family, including a barbecue, cream teas and children's games.
Entry forms for the Wanstead Village Show are available from Christ Church, St Mary's Church, Petty Son & Prestwich estate agents and www.parishofwanstead.org. For more details or to request a list of categories, email [email protected]

There's nowhere quite like Cape Town to start a trip to South Africa. If you're lucky, you'll get a glimpse of its majestic setting
at the foot of Table Mountain as you come in to land at the airport, and wherever you are in Cape Town, you're constantly catching a different view of the mountain that dominates this city. The city centre is fairly compact and crammed with history, and the surrounding area has plenty to explore.
First stop has to be Table Mountain itself – but keep an eye on the weather as the top of the mountain closes when the clouds roll in. Next, head to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, where the original docks have been redeveloped into a superb mix of visitor attractions, shops, restaurants and hotels, and where there's always something happening. This is also the gateway to the infamous Robben Island, just offshore.
To really discover South Africa beyond its cities, hire a car and head out of town – driving is easy and, apart from in Cape Town itself, traffic is generally light, plus you're never far from a beautiful view or a fascinating place to stop. The countryside outside of Cape Town is some of the most dramatic on the African continent, where the Cape Peninsula leads down to the Cape of Good Hope and the cold waters of the South Atlantic meet the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to create a unique climate. Towering cliffs and beautiful beaches mix with diverse flora and fauna to make this a nature lovers' paradise. At Boulders Beach, a colony of penguins live among the rocks, while further down the coast at Hermanus, whale watching is popular.
South Africa is famed for its wines and it's easy to discover why for yourself. The Cape Winelands around the towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek are renowned as the heart of South African wine production, and the dramatic countryside is dotted with vineyards. The Stellenbosch area has a series of wine routes for visitors to follow, and many wineries offer pairing tastings to show off their wines with local produce. Wine and cheese may be popular
in some areas, but here you can try wine and pizza, wine and chocolate and even wine and ice cream. Leave your car parked up for a day or two to really do the area justice.
The stretch of coastline between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth has become affectionately known as the Garden Route, and this is where a hire car particularly comes in to its own. At Cape Agulhas, halfway between Cape Town and the start of the Garden Route, you can gaze out over the southernmost point of Africa, where a restored lighthouse marks this otherwise remote and windswept spot. From here, head via Arniston Bay to the Garden Route itself, passing through small towns such as Mossel Bay and George. At the heart of the Garden Route is the pretty town of Knysna, set dramatically overlooking Knysna Lagoon and a great place to base yourself for a few days to explore the surrounding area.
The Western Cape is just one corner of South Africa, but its charms and attractions will leave you planning a return trip to explore more of this dramatic and diverse country.
Mark Haughton of Wanstead's longhaul travel specialist Escape Worldwide recently explored the Western Cape region of South Africa – a magical destination that promises a holiday with variety

You may remember Walter Wolfgang, he was the 82-year-old who got himself thrown out of the Labour Party's 2005
conference in Brighton. The images of a frail old man being bundled out of the conference hall by burly stewards were beamed into homes all over Britain and Europe. He was treated in this brutal way because he dared to utter the word "nonsense" during Jack Straw's speech, in which the then Foreign Secretary defended the need to keep our troops in Iraq (to promote "democracy").
Following a national uproar, he was readmitted to the conference the next day, with an apology from Labour's leaders and a standing ovation from the delegates. He went on to be elected to Labour's National Executive in 2006, and served for two years as a representative of the Grass Roots Alliance.
His political life began in 1937, when his Jewish parents sent him away from Nazi Germany to boarding school in England. The Nazis, who had gained political power during the economic depression, were ruthlessly persecuting Jewish people and other minorities. Walter managed to smuggle himself back into Germany to find out what was going on – he narrowly avoided arrest.
Like other Jewish people, he felt the effects of anti-Semitism and lost members of his family in the Holocaust. His father died in 1945, never having recovered from his time in Buchenwald concentration camp.
He became a British citizen in 1948, and joined the Labour Party the same year. By the outbreak of the Korean War in 1953 he had been made secretary of his ward in Richmond-on-Thames, where he still lives, having worked as an accountant until his retirement in 1990. He tried to organise a conference on Korea, but it was banned by Labour's Regional Organiser. He subsequently joined Victory for Socialism, forerunner of the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy, in which he is still active.
He led the fight against the Suez invasion in 1956, after which he became involved in the campaign to 'Ban the Bomb' and helped to organise the first Aldermaston march against nuclear weapons, which, at its peak, saw 150,000 people take part.
1979 saw the decision to deploy cruise and Pershing missiles in Europe and Labour CND, of which Walter was a founding member, took up the campaign, involving thousands of people, which eventually saw their removal from Britain.
Walter continues with activities in his local Labour Party and in the National and London Region CND. He has campaigned against the Polaris weapons system and its Trident replacement, which is up for decision again in 2016. He still addresses anti-war rallies, campaigns for justice for Palestinian people and for British citizens in Guantanamo Bay.
Veteran activist Walter Wolfgang, who turned 90 this year, will be speaking at Wanstead House this month Redbridge CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) introduces a life-long peace campaigner

No return of heatwave, says local weatherman
Weather enthusiast Scott Whitehead, who monitors local conditions with a weather station in his Aldersbrook garden, is forecasting an 'average' August that could be the wettest month of the summer, as it has been in five of the past 10 years. "The second week of
August could start quite thundery, with potential for a heavy downpour," said Scott, who predicts the best weather of the month will be during the third week. "There will be no return of the heatwave, but also not the washout of the last few summers." Visit wavidi.com/weather
Join the search for bats in Wanstead Park
The Wren Wildlife Group will lead a free nighttime walk through Wanstead Park on Thursday 15 August, in search of bats. Using a bat detector, which converts the echolocation 'shouts' emitted by bats into audible frequencies, the calls of different
species can be identified. "After sunset, scores of bats emerge from roosts in trees and buildings," explains Tim Harris, who will lead the walk. "They come out to feed on flying insects, so if the weather is inclement they are much harder to find." Call 07505 482 328
According to data released last month, Cambridge Park in Wanstead has come fourth in a list of the five worst streets for air pollution in the borough. The road, which runs from Wanstead station towards Leytonstone, recorded 4.51 tonnes of nitrogen dioxide
per kilometre per year, with an average of 94,133 vehicles using the road each day.
Jenny Jones, Green Party member of the London Assembly, has set up a website to enable residents to check pollution levels near them. Visit wavidi.com/roads
