A successful and popular Redbridge Book and Media Festival came to a close last month following a six-week programme of events. As one arts celebration fi nishes, so another one prepares to get underway and our attention now turns to the impending return of Wanstead’s art trail. Following the success of last year’s trail, organisers have extended the event from one to two weeks, giving residents and visitors more time to appreciate the work of local artists, which will be displayed in shops and other venues throughout Wanstead. The trail will launch on Sunday 11 September, the same day as the Wanstead Festival, and local businesses are being urged to get involved (see page 18).
As well as the benefi ts the art trail brings to the local economy, by increasing footfall on the High Street, it should also be congratulated for the positive contribution it makes to the community as a whole and the opportunity it gives people to produce, discover and enjoy local art.
Another local artist you may like to discover is William Morris. Although he died in 1896 he was, amongst other skills, a designer and poet of great infl uence. He is also the subject of a presentation at Wanstead Library this month, by the Wanstead & Woodford WEA. Turn to pages 26-27 for an overview of his historical links to the local area.
The Friends of Wanstead Parklands are inviting you to learn about local history as well this month, as they host an educational walk around Wanstead Park to explain its unique water system (see pages 34-35).
Protecting, preserving and improving our local area is something the The Wanstead Society have been working at for over 14 years andthey are to be applauded for the contributionsthey have made to the area. Turn to pages 12-13 to fi nd out more about what they have done, what thefuture holds and how you can bepart of it.

The City of London Corporation have announced that they will not be proceeding at this time with a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore various features of Wanstead Park, despite extensive consultation and the recent production of a Conservation Statement.
A spokesperson for the City of London – which manages the Park as part of Epping Forest – said: “Further work needs to be undertaken to forecast the costs of restoring the lakes and
the ongoing costs of maintaining a restored Park need to be fully established before a formal application can
be made for funding. The City of London remains committed to completing a Conservation
Management Plan and to this end there will be a three month consultation this summer.”

The trunk of a sweet chestnut tree – which was removed from George Green last year for protective care – is due to be returned to Wanstead. A City of London spokesperson said: “After consultations with timber specialists and a national timber organisation, our intention is to return the tree to its original site. We hope to be able to bring the tree back as soon as we can for local residents and visitors to enjoy.”
In order to prevent the tree trunk from decaying, it will be placed on a free-draining gravel base.
A picturesque road in Wanstead will undergo a dramatic change following a decision by the Council to fell 11 horse chestnut trees in St Mary’s Avenue.
“Discussions will be held with local ward members to explain the reasons for removal in more detail and a
replanting proposal. The trees need to be removed to ensure the safety of local residents and road users. This is due to internal decay identified by one of the Council’s arboricultural officers” explained a spokesperson for Redbridge Council. Replanting is planned for the winter.

Pavement campaign victory for Wanstead Society
Earlier this year, members of The Wanstead Society took up a campaign to complain about the poor state of the paving in Wanstead High Street and Cambridge Park. The Council listened and agreed with the Society and maintenance work has since begun
to reinstate areas of temporary Tarmac to paving which matches the existing look.
At the Society’s request, the Council will also look into erecting conservation area signs in the High Street later this year, to raise the profile of the area’s conservation status.

The Wanstead Society has been involved in a number of projects over the years, and was originally established to protect the
Evergreen field next to Christ Church Green. Politically neutral since its inception, the Society has fought hard to improve Wanstead by securing its cultural heritage through working with developers and the Council to ensure that any new buildings, or alterations to existing ones, preserve or enhance the character of the area. Wanstead is a very desirable place to live and many developers would like to build here for that reason. One of the aims of the Society is to ensure that our cultural heritage is not lost in the march towards progress.
“The Wanstead Society wants to work with developers to guide them towards better planning applications that enhance our unique history. One example of this was our work with the Counties Residents Association and Chepstow Developers to ensure that the development of a large site in Leicester Road is much more in keeping with the surrounding homes” explains founding member Peter Arben. However, we don’t just keep an eye on major planning decisions, the Society has also been instrumental in promoting cultural and community events within the area.

is litter free and in fi ne bloom, and last year the Society organized a community clean up day at Nightingale Green which brought over 50 neighbours, society members and families together to restore the Green to its former glory. Plants were donated by the City of London, and continue to be maintained by the Society
In fact, 2010 was the Society’s busiest year as it co-founded Wanstead’s fi rst art trail, which saw local shops display hundreds of pieces of art by local artists.
“ The Art Trail brought together local artists with local businesses for a hugely successful event which increased footfall in the high street, the profi le of Wanstead as an area and, very importantly, the profi ts of local businesses” says Katriye Ibrahim, co-founder of the trail.
In addition we organised a political question time for candidates in the local and national elections standing in our constituency so that they could set out their policies for Wanstead and be quizzed by the general public on anything from foreign policy to planning laws. It proved an enormous success, and is something we plan to replicate for the 2012 Mayoral election campaign.
What does the future hold? One of the projects taking off , which the Society sponsors, is the Smarter High Street Campaign.
“Wanstead High Street is a vital part of our lives and I want to see it doing a better job than it does now, serving the local community well into the future. I see this future as facing a range of potential threats such as local authority cutbacks, unsympathetic development and competition from the largest retail development in the UK – the Westfi eld Stratford City shopping centre, which opens later this year. The campaign aims to create a unique, characterful High Street that is an alternative to the clones and the soulless shopping centres. This involves promoting conservation area values and helping businesses develop ideas that really add value to the lives of local people” says Gabrielle Collard, Wanstead Society member and founder of the Smarter High Street Campaign.
However, the next few years are going to be tough ones for Wanstead. The Council, like most of the country, is facing huge and diffi cult cuts. That’s why Wanstead has never needed its Society as much as it does now.
The Society has been instrumental in campaigning for the restoration of the play park on Christ Church
Green, the introduction of Conservation Area signage along the High Street, supporting local events like the Wanstead Festival and leading the fi ght to keep Wanstead and King George Hospitals from closing.
Resources are short and money will be tight over the coming years, but with the Wanstead Society campaigning for our area we hope to be able to preserve our heritage, whilst continuing to promote Wanstead through a variety of campaigns and events that bring the whole community together.”
Finally, the Society aims to raise its profi le and the scope of its projects by investigating registered charity status, but it can only do it with your help. We rely on local residents to guide and inform us, so please support us by becoming a member.

Artists will be asking local shops and businesses to display their work for the second Wanstead art trail – a major
community event, being launched alongside the Wanstead Festival.
Last year ceramic cats curled up in baskets at the pet shop, the goddess Venus adorned a high street beauty shop, while cows grazed on paint-green pastures behind the butcher shop window. About 60 shops and businesses were among the venues that took part. Now there’s the chance for even more to join the trail, organised by Art Group Wanstead, which was formed by artists who took part last year.
Shops and businesses – which aren’t being charged to take part in the trail – will be asked to display paintings, drawings, mosaic, sculpture, photography and other visual art works. Art Trail Wanstead will run from Sunday 11 September until the end of Sunday 25 September – a week longer than last year when some visitors travelled from miles around to see the 200 artists at almost 70 venues. The organisers are optimistic that a larger number of businesses and local venues will want to participate this time after seeing the success of the last event.
All participating shops are being asked to give artists some space in their windows – which also draws more attention to their businesses – raising footfall in the High Street and boosting trade. Trevor Spicer, manager of Heads ‘n’ Tails pet shop, encourages his fellow shopkeepers to take part. “It’s about taking part in the community and it does bring new people into the shops. Last time some people said they didn’t realise Wanstead had a pet shop until the trail.”
Art Group Wanstead chairperson Donna Mizzi said: “Some businesses were a bit nervous about taking part at first. But when they met the participants and saw the work, some opened their doors to even more art and artists. It was a wonderful
response. A good number of business people even asked if it was OK to keep the work on display when the trail had finished.”
Win Jones, a spokesperson for the group, said: “An enormous amount has been achieved within a year after the first trail. The George is allowing us to have an ongoing gallery upstairs plus art, design and craft fairs to make the area more of a magnet for creative people.” The next art fair is on Saturday 11 June (see page 56 for details).
Shopkeepers and managers are asked to be receptive and encouraging to local artists, who will include amateurs and professionals. The organisers say the shops that show work by less experienced artists will be appreciated by the community as much as those businesses who accept very professional works. A map showing participants and details of the businesses and the art they are showing will be covered in 10,000 free booklets as a guide for the event. Members of the public will not be charged to follow the trail.
Last year a large number of shops and local businesses took part in Wanstead’s first art trail, and even more are urged to participate this September. Report by Donna Mizzi
Any businesses interested in sponsoring the trail are asked to email the AGW chairperson: [email protected]. For up-to-date information about taking part in the trail, visit www.artgroupwanstead.com.

He was born in Walthamstow, the third child and eldest son of William Morris, a partner in a firm of bill brokers in the City
of London. His maternal grandfather taught music in Worcester. His health was considered delicate, and so, confined indoors, he learned to read at an early age and by the age of four he was familiar with the ‘Waverley’ novels. When he was six, the family moved to Woodford Hall. This impressive mansion within a park was close to St Mary’s Church, Woodford. The surrounding lands of Epping Forest presented young William with new opportunities for an outdoor life, bringing him health and vigour. He rode in the Forest, sometimes in a toy suit of armour, where he became a close observer of nature and soon he was able to recognise any bird on the wing. It seems that the ‘Spirit of the Forest’ was his first and arguably his most loyal muse.
Initially he studied with his elder sisters’ governess until he was nine, when he was sent to school in
Walthamstow. Three years later his father died, leaving the family quite well-to-do, but Woodford Hall was considered unnecessarily large and they relocated to Water House, Walthamstow, in Forest Road – which today we know as the William Morris Gallery.
In 1848, Morris entered Marlborough School. He gained little from his three years there, beyond a taste for architecture, fostered by the school library and an attraction towards the Anglo-Catholic movement. At Christmas 1851, he was removed, due to his slow progress with school work. He was sent to live as a private pupil with the Reverend F.B. Guy, Assistant Master at Forest School, Snaresbrook (and later Canon of St Albans), for a year to prepare him for university.
Forest School archives still contain many items of correspondence from Morris, and the school boasts a Morris stained glass window in the chapel. This period renewed his love of the Forest glades, which he had so enjoyed in his childhood.
William MorrisWilliam Morris (24 March 1834 - 3 October 1896) eventually developed into a designer, poet and idealistic socialist of enormous influence. But how many residents realise that he drew his earliest inspiration from our locality? Ahead of a Wanstead & Woodford WEA presentation at Wanstead Library this month, Christine Fairfax, a local art history enthusiast, investigates his life and times in the area

In June 1852, Morris entered Exeter College, Oxford, where he met Edward Burne-Jones who became his lifelong friend. They joined a Birmingham group at Pembroke College known among themselves as the ‘Brotherhood’. Together they read theology, ecclesiastical history, medieval poetry and studied art. During the long vacations they visited English churches and Continental cathedrals. They became strongly infl uenced by the paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites, John Ruskin’s essays and books, Thomas Malory’s ‘Morte d’Arthur’ and the poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Both Morris and Burne-Jones had come to Oxford with the intention of taking holy orders, but later decided their energies should be spent in social reform.
Following his life at Oxford, including his marriage and wider infl uences such as his travels to Iceland, Morris did not return to the Woodford or Walthamstow area. His later homes included the Red House, Bexleyheath, Kent, and from 1869, Morris, his family and Dante Gabriel Rossetti rented the country house of Kelmscott Manor, which was an important retreat and symbol of country living for him.
In 1861, the decorative arts fi rm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co was founded with Morris, Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown and Philip Webb as partners along with Charles Faulkner and Peter Paul Marshall. Their fi rst headquarters were at 8 Red Lion Square, Holborn. In 1865, following the fi rm’s move to Queen’s Square, Bloomsbury, Morris established his living quarters under the same roof as his workshops.
Abiding infl uences on his life and creative visual designs for both homes and churches were his memories of Forest scenes. A common motif is intertwined branches, and one can imagine Morris as a young lad looking up into the tree canopy, with birds darting in and out of the foliage and blossoms. Such designs also relate to early English medieval interests. Woodford Hall was close to ancient St Mary’s Church and churchyard. The fi rst stone building on the site was constructed from 1177 to 1198, and rebuilt in brick with stone dressings 1396-7. As the population locally increased and prospered thanks to links with the East India Company, the building was enlarged with the addition of the north and south aisles. In 1817, the tower was restored to add more bells, and a gallery and stained glass windows were added in the church. Sadly this church was destroyed by fi re in the last century.
The Morris family of Woodford/Walthamstow had strong links with the Anglican Church. Morris’s
younger sister, Isabella (born 1842) became the churchwoman who oversaw the revival of the Deaconess order. The family would have been well acquainted with the Ingleby family of Valentines Mansion, Ilford. Sarah Ingleby (born 1824) was well known and loved for her devotion and generosity. Her son, Arthur Ingleby, was ordained and later appointed chaplain of the ancient Hospital Chapel on Ilford Hill. Following the death of his father, Clement Ingleby, Arthur commissioned memorial windows from Morris & Co in 1886. The beautiful designs were prepared by Burne-Jones and depict St Clement and St Valentine. Another higher west window shows delightful angel faces. The visual impact of such lovely Morris & Co designs may well rival the infl uence for posterity of a good sermon!
Art historian and lecturer Graham Slimming will be making a presentation on William Morris at Wanstead Library on Saturday 18 June, 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Tickets are £3 each and will be available on the door.

Too many people in Wanstead have little idea of their historic neighbour – the Park. One reason for this is that Wanstead Park
lacks a clear or obvious entrance. You have to know the Park lurks off Warren Road, Blake Hall Road or Northumberland Avenue. Once in the Park, however, its sheer size and hidden secrets can make full exploration a joy for days.
Wanstead Park is a superb place to play or relax. Just to walk and spend time outside can heal the body and soothe the soul. Invest time and discover that we have a virtually unique listed grade II* treasure hidden right on our doorstep along with a landscape of history and wildlife.
The Park and its surrounds have a stunning and diverse wildlife population – especially for an area so close to London’s residential sprawl. The varied habitats include lakes and ponds, woodlands, open rough grassland and mown playing fi elds. These attract over a hundred bird species, of which more than fi fty regularly breed here. There is an abundant variety of plant, animal and other natural life.
England’s 1,450 parks and gardens of special historic interest are graded in a similar fashion to listed buildings – based on their landscape architecture or historic interest. Grade I parks and
gardens are of international importance; grade II* sites, such as Wanstead Park, are particularly important parks and gardens of exceptional interest; while grade II parks and gardens are of a suffi ciently high level of interest to merit a national designation.
Established through the extravagance of arguably one of the richest families in eighteenth century England, Sir Josiah Child and his descendants invested their untold wealth here, gained from India. Wanstead Park has been hailed as East London’s ‘Hampton Court’ and is undoubtedly one of the capital’s foremost designed landscapes.
This enclosed area of Epping Forest began life as a Tudor Deer Park in 1545, before developing as a country estate during the Stuart Period. The structure of the gardens, the initial large-scale use of water and the pattern of rides and avenues, were fi rst put in place from the 1660s by the then owner, Sir Josiah Child. The original Tudor House was replaced in 1720 by a Palladian Mansion, surrounded by one of the fi nest and earliest examples of the English Landscape Movement.
Sadly, the great house itself was demolished in 1824 to pay off debts, but most of the great Park remains and has an extraordinary history: a site

occupied since pre-Roman times; a royal court of James I and Charles I; and briefl y a centre of England’s government. The world’s largest telescope of its time was also built here in 1717, leading to great discoveries at Wanstead like the aberration of light and the oscillation of the earth.
The backbone of the Park is its lake system: fi ve great lakes – The Basin, Shoulder of Mutton Pond, Heronry Pond, Perch Pond and Ornamental Water – which most visitors simply don’t realise are linked like a chain, through a hidden system of pipelines, spillways and ditches. Two other lakes have been lost over the years. The Reservoir was abandoned in 1815, to be planted out as Reservoir Wood and The Great Lake was drained in 1908 to become the Lakehouse estate. Both remain linked to the overall system and still contribute fl ows.
The Park is a product mainly of the eighteenth century: no tractors, no bulldozers, no heavy machinery. The only ‘earth movers’ were men with wickerwork baskets, shovels and donkeys – plus years of time and lots of sweat. Keep that in mind when next you admire a view, or just take a leisurely stroll, in Wanstead Park.

Kids’ tea time. What do those words mean to you? Do they bring up images of rosy-cheeked, cheerful children tucking into
delicious home-cooked fi sh pie and lightly steamed organic broccoli, or does your brain fl inch in memory of the battle zone which is the dining table, with sullen faces and huge plates of cold, congealed food heading for the dustbin? Do they suggest meals full of wholesome nutrients or the ping of the microwave as the ready meal reaches the prescribed temperature? Probably all of the above, at some point or other.
When it comes to children and food, there is a whole world of mixed messages. On one hand, there is the popularity of cooking programmes such as Annabel’s Kitchen on CITV, which demonstrate to children how to cook healthy, fun food. And yet adverts on the same channel are for McDonald’s and chocolate coin makers. Similarly, there is a big push from the government about healthy eating, with free fruit snacks distributed at primary schools, but mothers tell us that their children will only eat school dinners if pizza and chips are on the menu, or that they have to include crisps in their child’s lunch box, otherwise the child will be ravenous by the 3.30pm pick up.
Lots of parents tell us that their children eat the same food over and over again. By creating their own dishes children are far more likely to actually eat them and try new foods.
However, many parents struggle to fi nd the time at home to cook with their children, or indeed to cook for themselves, every night. The pressures of juggling work and raising children mean that it’s
very easy to serve up quick food such as fi shfi ngers and chicken nuggets, especially when these dishes are eaten without the fuss that can be created when a child is presented with, say, caulifl ower cheese. While the idea of encouraging your child to be the next Junior Masterchef champion is a lovely one, it’s hard to start showing him or her how to mash potatoes when you’ve only just got in from work and all you want to do is get everyone fed and in bed as soon as possible.
As with most things in life, a balance is the answer. Of course, have a packet of sausages in the freezer and a fast-food dinner of burger and chips can sometimes be exactly what is needed. On the fl ip side, try making large batches of food when you do cook, and serve some and freeze the rest. Loads of dishes like lasagne, chilli and aubergine bake freeze and reheat brilliantly, and you can serve a great home-made meal without having to do any more than shove the frozen portion into the oven. Or serve pasta and a jar of sauce but steam some broccoli and add it at the last minute. It takes minimal eff ort but ensures your child gets one of those portions of ‘fi ve-a-day’ we’ve all heard so much about.
And as for cooking with your child, again, be realistic. Put aside twenty minutes at the weekend rather than trying to cook during the week after a long day at school. Keep recipes simple – there are thousands on the internet to choose from. Try a new, savoury recipe, but also let your child bake chocolate brownies or jam tarts to keep them enthusiastic. Don’t fl inch at the mess on the fl oor as your budding Jamie Oliver gaily sieves fl our absolutely everywhere – clearing up together can be part of the exercise.
We all try to provide healthy and balanced meals for our children, but they are not always appreciated by the young food critics. Janet Oliver, from local children’s cookery school Scrumptious Pumpkin, off ers advice for kids’ tea time

Once again, the City of London Corporation are proud to present an exciting programme of outdoor theatre
performances in The Temple enclosure, Wanstead Park. This year renowned outdoor theatre production company, Illyria, will perform Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox and, for the first time ever, the rousing tunes of Gilbert and Sullivan and The Pirates of Penzance.
Local audiences have been enjoying Illyria’s rumbustious performances for the last five years in Wanstead Park, but such jollities are just the modern manifestation of a long tradition of Wanstead entertainments.
Back in Tudor times, Wanstead House was owned by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Queen Elizabeth’s favourite and possibly the love of her life. Dudley had his own ‘company of players’ as well as a company of musicians and Wanstead no doubt saw many a Tudor masque and revel. A couple of centuries on when Wanstead was in its heyday as an ostentatious and highly fashionable mansion and pleasure garden, there’s a marvellous description of a theatrical entertainment held in front of the Boathouse Grotto in the 1760s. In keeping with the Gothic extravagances of the day, there arose from the water ‘a ghastly coffin covered with slime and other things’ from which extended ‘a terrible apparition with outstretched hand screeching in a hollow voice’. The excitement was such that ‘some of the company fell into the water and had to be saved’. As well as the shell encrusted Grotto, the gardens boasted not one but two amphitheatres and the ‘fortifications’, a small castle built upon a cluster of islands. This was used as the backdrop for mock naval battles with no doubt lots of smoke and the excitement of gunpowder, cannon and fireworks.
Illyria are themselves well known for their fun special effects with smoke, bangs and last year, a huge inflatable peach that the crowd played with like a giant beach ball. We can guarantee lots of action, a witty take on each of the three plays and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon or evening. Don’t
forget your picnic and blanket or folding chair and enjoy the tranquil view, the historic ambience and a hint of aristocratic pleasures of days gone by.
Superintendent of Epping Forest, Paul Thomson, adds: “We are very excited about the return of Illyria with their eclectic mix of productions. Without the local community turning out to attend and support these events we will be unable to continue this historic tradition of outdoor theatre in Wanstead Park, which is one of Epping Forest’s unique and heritage locations.”
Theatre fun in the parkAs the ever popular outdoor theatre season returns to Wanstead Park, Yvette Woodhouse from the City of London – the corporation which manages the park – looks at Wanstead‘s tradition of entertainment
