What type of English courses are there in Year 11?ATAR Courses: Examinable courses, which

may be used towards a university entrance score.

General Courses: TAFE, traineeships, apprenticeships and employment pathway.

Foundation Courses: TAFE, traineeships, apprenticeships and employment pathway.

Organisation of CoursesEach course has 4 units.

Units 1 and 2 are taken in Year 11.Units 3 and 4 are taken in Year 12.

The WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) examination for ATAR courses is based only on units 3 and 4.

Year 11 Foundation CoursesEnglish Foundation:

is appropriate for students to meet the literacy requirements for graduation. (Covers the skills required for OLNA)

cannot be chosen by students, students will be placed into this course.

is appropriate to prepare students for employment and further training.

Year 11 Foundation CourseEnglish Foundation provides students with the

knowledge, skills and understanding to use literacy in a range of contexts, including personal, community and workplace/ employment.

This course is for students who have not demonstrated the literacy standard in the OLNA. The course prepares students for the OLNA test to obtain literacy for WACE/ graduation.

Year 11 Foundation CourseEnglish Foundation :

aims to develop skills in reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening in work, learning, community and everyday personal contexts.

involves an improvement in English literacy, including reading ability, verbal or spoken literacy, literacy involved in writing, and visual literacy.

Year 11 Foundation Coursewill develop skills in the use of functional

language conventions, including spelling, punctuation and grammar.

is the most challenging English course and is suitable for students who are very strong at English and wish to go to university.

focuses on developing analytical, creative, and critical thinking skills: students will critically engage with texts from the contemporary world, the past, and from Australian and other cultures.

for university bound students with a strong interest and high achievement in English and a passion for reading and writing.

English Additional Languagedesigned for students who speak another

language as their first or ‘home’ language. focuses on development of the competent use

of Standard Australian English (SAE) in a range of contexts.

specific eligibility criteria apply. Students need to complete an Eligibility Application Form and forward it to SCSA prior to enrolment. See Mrs Hunt for details. Applies up to seven years since arrival.

English Additional LanguageEnglish as an Additional Language

ATAR develops academic English skills to prepare students for tertiary study.

EAL/D General course prepares students for a range of post-secondary destinations in further education, training and the workplace.
