WAN Connection Types

There are three types of Wan Connectivity :

• Dedicated Lines

• Circuit Switching

• Packet Switching

Page 3: WAN Connection Types There are three types of Wan Connectivity : Dedicated Lines Circuit Switching Packet Switching.

Dedicated Lines

• Used for shorter to medium distances and

for longer connectivity.

• Private line

• Bandwidth is fixed

• Line is 24hrs up

• Whether used or not billing is done

• eg: Leased Lines

Page 4: WAN Connection Types There are three types of Wan Connectivity : Dedicated Lines Circuit Switching Packet Switching.

Circuit Switching

• Used for medium to longer distances and

for shorter connectivity.

• Bandwidth is fixed

• Billing Depends upon the Usage

• eg: ISDN , PSTN (Dial Up connections)

Page 5: WAN Connection Types There are three types of Wan Connectivity : Dedicated Lines Circuit Switching Packet Switching.

Packet Switching

• Used for medium to longer distances and

for longer connectivity.

• Bandwidth is shared

• eg: Frame-Relay

Page 6: WAN Connection Types There are three types of Wan Connectivity : Dedicated Lines Circuit Switching Packet Switching.

• Point to Point

Protocol

• Open Standard

Protocol (works with

same and different

company Routers i.e.

Cisco–Nortel, Cisco–

Multicom.

• Supports

Authentication

• Supports Compression

• High level Data link

Control

• Vendor proprietary

Protocol (works with

same company Router

only, i.e. Cisco-Cisco,

Nortel-Nortel, etc.)

• No Support for

Authentication

• No Support for

Compression

PPP HDLC

Encapsulation

Page 7: WAN Connection Types There are three types of Wan Connectivity : Dedicated Lines Circuit Switching Packet Switching.

PPP Authentication

In PPP two types of Authentication :

• PAP - Password Authentication Protocol

• 2 Way Handshaking protocol

• Username and password are sent in clear text

• No Security

• CHAP- Challenge Handshake Authentication protocol

• 3 Way Handshaking protocol

• Username is sent in clear text and Password in

encrypted form

• Secure

Public Switched Telephone Network

• Analog Signal

• Maximum Speed of 33 to 40 Kbps

• Call Establishment is Slower (minimum 1 minute)

• Terminated at the PSTN Switch at the Exchange

• Supports Single service at a time.

Page 11: WAN Connection Types There are three types of Wan Connectivity : Dedicated Lines Circuit Switching Packet Switching.

Integrated Services Digital Network

• Digital Signal

• Minimum Speed for 128 Kbps

• Call Establishment is faster (within 2 sec)

• Terminated at the ISDN Switch at the Exchange

• Supports Multiple services at a time.

ISDN Types

• BRI – Basic Rate Interface

- (2B + 1D) channels

- Each channel 64 kbps

- B channel used for data

transmission

- D Channel used for

signaling(16kbps)

- (2* 64) + (1 * 16) + (1*48) =

192kbps

- B stands for Bearer

- D stands for Delta

- F stands for Framing

• PRI – Primary Rate Interface

2 Standards :

European Standard

(E1)

- 30B + 1D +1F channels

- (30*64) + (2*64) =

2.048Mbps

US Standard (T1)

- 23B + 1D +1F channels

- (23*64) + ( 1*64) +(1*8)

What is NAT?

• NAT is a process of changing the IP address,

typically used for internet access (due to

shortage of public IP addresses) or to hide the

internal network.

NAT

• Inside Local Addresses – An IP address assigned to a host inside a network. This address is likely to be a RFC 1918 private address.

• Inside Global Address – A legitimate IP address assigned by the NIC or service provider that represents one or more inside local IP address to the outside world.

• Outside Local Address - The IP address of an outside host as it known to the hosts in the inside network.

• Outside Global Address - The IP address assigned to a host on the outside network. The owner of the host assigns this address.
