Just a year ago, we were preparing for a change of historic dimensions: the integration of The John Woodman Higgins Collection into the Worcester Art Museum. While the integration process will take several years, we already have reasons to celebrate. In less than a year, we accessioned the Higgins collection (equal to roughly 5% of our holdings), transferred nearly all of the Higgins financial and other material assets, welcomed several former Higgins employees to WAM, and assimilated arms and armor programming into our own offerings.

Now the only institution in New England to showcase arms and armor, the Worcester Art Museum is part of a prestigious club, including the Met, Philadelphia, and Cleveland, that features this kind of art. We have not only saved a beloved collection for Worcester but added extremely rare and high quality art to our already rich collection, allowing us to tell an even more compelling story about civilizations around the globe.

The opening of the exhibition, Knights!, three months after the Higgins’ closing, allowed us to introduce a new, institution-wide narrative that speaks to traditional core audiences, as well as new ones. In addition to combining art from our own collection with arms and armor (seen in palaces but rarely in museums), we are also building connections with Pop culture and, thanks to a collaboration with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, with the modern reality of gun violence.

It has been a year of innovation, far beyond the exciting changes the Higgins integration allowed us to make. In the

[remastered] galleries, we are experimenting with electronic labels, new presentation modes, and program formats; in Knights!, we incorporated an interactive space for children to encourage hands-on exploration via art and touch carts; and we are rethinking our transitional spaces, such as Salisbury Hall, to make them welcoming spots for lingering and enjoying a sense of community.

It has also been a year of capacity building. With the hiring of our new Director of Philanthropy, Nora Maroulis, and new Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of European Art, Jon L. Seydl, our leadership team is complete. Now, our focus is on broadening internal strengths, so that we can reach new audiences, garner further community support, and grow our financial backing. An unprecedented number of press testimonials, including articles in The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Huffington Post, have helped us.

On behalf of all of the WAM staff, I thank our donors, members, and friends, who helped make our achievements a reality, who celebrated with us, and who trusted us to deliver the transformative experiences that they expect from this institution.

Join us again as we continue this exciting journey in FY15!

What a year FY2014 has been! In this, my first year as President, the Board of Trustees has been pleased to see tremendous excitement and change in the Museum. It has been invigorating, hectic, scholarly, fun, thoughtful, provocative, welcoming...and occasionally perplexing:Did you say a pink horse?!

As the new stewards of the Higgins Armory Museum Collection, we take very seriously the trust given to us by the Higgins Board, longtime supporters, and the generations of visitors, who loved being transported back to the Middle Ages when walking into the Armory’s Great Hall.

Throughout the past year, it has been tremendously rewarding to see the tangible results of months of hard work at all levels, from the Board to Museum staff: the completion of the covenant between the Higgins Armory Museum and the Worcester Art Museum, the smooth transfer of the Higgins collection to WAM, and the opening of the fabulous Knights! exhibition.

On behalf of the entire Board, I thank the staff of both institutions for doing whatever it took to ensure that this transition be carried out smoothly and successfully.

The year also saw an increase in philanthropic contributions from Board members, representing a significant base of support for and invigorated commitment to the Museum. Participation in our June gala and auction shattered all prior fund-raising records for a Museum event, setting a new bar for the area and loudly signaling our community’s support.

With these indicators of early success the Board of Trustees moves into FY2015 excited and confident about the Museum’s future.

The herculean task of integrating the Higgins Armory Museum collection to the Worcester Art Museum was shepherded by our Board of Trustees, conceptually defined by our leadership team, and implemented by the entire WAM staff within record time. Part of a broader initiative to make the Worcester Art Museum more welcoming for its diverse audiences, the move also had strong support from the community, as evidenced by the generous financial jump-start funding by several local foundations.

The integration would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the Higgins Armory Museum board and staff, who worked very hard on a smooth and responsible transfer of assets, while helping us translate the Higgins’ legacy into the reality of an encyclopedic art museum.

In just eight months since the Higgins closed, the integration has truly transformed the Worcester Art Museum.

The Higgins Integration: Saving a National Treasure for Our City, Strengthening the Worcester Art Museum on its New Course

Acquisition of the entire John Woodman Higgins Collection 2014.1 - 2014.1176Gift of the Higgins Armory Museum(For a complete listing, visit worcesterart.org/collection/higgins-collection)

The collection numbers 2,242 items in the Museum’s database, but the effective number is closer to 2,000 (a suit of armor, for example, may include two dozen entries in the database). The jewel in the crown of this collection is the European suits of armor of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Amassing a collection of this size and quality could not be replicated today. While centered on arms and armor of the European Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Higgins Collection also includes important holdings in ancient, African, Islamic, South Asian, and Japanese arms and armor.

Acquisition of 1,500 books as special collections materials. Most of them are already accessible in the WAM Library.

James Ricardi, who has been taking art classes at WAM since he was six years old, conveys his passion for knights in this triptych, which shows future, present, and past renditions of “Knights.” Now 13-years old, James is a student at Forest Grove Middle School. The son of Abigail and Ken Hannaford-Ricardi of Worcester, James has Down’s Syndrome and Selective Mutism and enjoys expressing himself through art.

Page 7: WAM Annual Report 2014

Eliciting community support: Significant jump-start funding for the Higgins Armory Collection Integration was provided by The George I. Alden Trust, the Fred Harris Daniels Foundation, Inc., The Fletcher Foundation, The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation, The Stoddard Charitable Trust, and The Manton Foundation. Additional support was provided by the Hoche-Schofield Foundation, the Rockwell Foundation, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.- As of August 31, 2014 just under half of the $12 million goal for the Higgins Integration project had been raised or pledged.

Engaging visitors: Renaissance Faire, the Knights! weekend-long opening event, attracted nearly 4,500 visitors, the highest attendance over a three-day period in recent years. In Knights! the Museum developed new interpretive strategies, including 13 interactive educational and survey iPads; audio cones; try-on armor and other interactive stations; and Helmutt’s House, an interactive space for families. Weekly arms and armor demonstrations were added in May; art carts were introduced during the summer; and drop-in programs made extensive use of Knights!

Immediate presenting and contextualizing of arms and armor in the Hiatt Gallery: Opening of Knights! on March 28, 2014 barely three months after the closing of the Higgins Armory Museum Introduction of Helmutt’s House (an integration of the Higgins’ Castle Quest interactive area into the exhibition) Opening of Guns without Borders in Mexico and Central America: Photography from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, which ran from March 28 to November 16, 2014* * We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Pulitzer Center with the exhibition, Africa’s Children of Arms, which will be on view

Leveraging the Higgins Integration: The advertising and marketing materials for Knights! not only established a new era for the Museum, but placed WAM in a local and regional context. Highlights included a foldout magazine piece in The Boston Globe Magazine “Travel Section” and a specially-wrapped WRTA bus. National, regional, and local press included The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Art News, and other print, television and radio coverage.

Knights! is sponsored in part by Cole Contracting, Inc., Reliant Medical Group, and Unum.

Page 8: WAM Annual Report 2014

The decision in 2013 to integrate the Higgins collection into WAM was the catalyst for transforming the Museum into a family-friendly institution. The commitment, not only to preserve an important collection of arms and armor and its legacy, but also to provide a new welcoming home for Higgins audiences, created a rare – and exciting – opportunity to completely rethink the WAM experience. Many of the ideas generated through that process came to fruition in FY14.

A focus on experimentation and creative thinking brought innovative gallery interpretations designed to engage multi-generational audiences and demystify art. These ranged from interactive iPads, non-traditional seating that invites lingering, and weekly nude drawing classes in the galleries to Helmutt’s House, art carts, and family programming. The introduction of

Helmutt, our new mascot and ambassador, was an important step in fostering a welcoming atmosphere for families.

In addition, we improved our community connections by using art as a tool for social cohesion. Highlights include the establishment of WAM as a polling site for the City of Worcester, outreach to ethnic and non-traditional museum audiences through Community Days, and Art + Market, an alternative farmer’s market and gathering place for our friends and neighbors during the summer.

We recognize that WAM’s future success will depend on our continuing to embrace experimentation and to think expansively about supporting a visitor-centric culture and connecting art with individual experiences, joy, and discovery.

Page 10: WAM Annual Report 2014

Due to an active program of acquisitions, including the Higgins Integration, the official number of works in the Worcester Art Museum collection increased in FY14 to 38,291, up from 35,893. The care of these works continued to be a priority.

The most prominent work to undergo conservation treatment was The Last Judgment, our monumental tapestry from around 1500, which was sent to a specialized laboratory in Mechelen, Belgium. The tapestry will be back on view in the fall of 2015, along with the reinstallation of our Renaissance galleries.

Another major conservation campaign, the restoration of two paintings by William Hogarth, was completed by our conservation department and made possible by a TEFAF grant. These magnificent works, Portraits of William and Elizabeth James, are back on view, first in the Jeppson Idea Lab, and

then, permanently, in our 18th-century European galleries. Our collection’s digital presence advanced considerably, including the successful completion of an IMLS-funded digitization project, through which the entire WAM paintings collection was photographed; a major photography campaign of arms and armor collections; and the leap from about 1,200 object images online to just over 10,000. This initiative will not only help us to connect better with the international community of art lovers but will also be a major tool in engaging with local colleges and universities.

Moving forward, we will create a long-term digital strategy for the collections, as well as improve storage. Finally, in preparation for the Museum’s reaccreditation, the curatorial division will begin a complete inventory of the collection, which has not taken place for decades.

The Museum’s development team supported the Higgins Integration with fundraising and donor stewardship, raising $5.8 million towards the project’s goal of $12 million. In addition, the division was successful in transitioning its leadership and growing regular development programs – especially Membership and Corporate Relations, which provide important unrestricted financial support for all Museum activities.

A highlight of the year was a sumptuous Renaissance-themed feast and auction that built on the excitement about the Higgins Collection. The first WAM auction since 2008, the event brought together over 300 of WAM’s close friends, family, and supporters and raised over $170,000 net for the Museum.

With the overarching goal of cultivating a renewed culture of philanthropy, the division’s priorities include designing and implementing strategies for achieving short-term fundraising priorities and long-term institutional goals. These include completing funding for the Higgins Integration and related projects, ensuring and increasing Development’s contribution to FY15 and FY16 operating budgets, completing funding for the Welu Endowed Curatorial Position, and building capacity for campaign readiness.

We are grateful to the donors and friends at every level whose continuing commitment and excitement enables us to fulfill the Worcester Art Museum’s mission to bring art and community together.

A patron devoted to education, Jeanne Curtis was a long-standing docent at the Worcester Art Museum where she witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the Museum’s extensive education program. She enjoyed the opportunity both to learn about the Museum’s world-renowned collection and to share it with others, especially children from throughout the community.

Over the years Ms. Curtis supported many Museum initiatives including the effort to establish an active program of contemporary art.

Following her passing in 2012, the Museum learned that Ms. Curtis had made a generous provision in her will for a leadership gift to the Museum. The bequest was received in 2014, significantly boosting the Museum’s fundraising results and providing vital and enduring support to priority projects, including the James A. Welu Curator of European Art Endowment Fund.

We are grateful to Ms. Curtis for her tremendous generosity and foresight. Her legacy is one that will positively impact people and projects at the Museum for many years to come.

An Enduring Legacy

Statement of Financial Position

Fiscal year 2014 was a solid financial year for the Museum. Net assets increased by $13.1 million (12.7 %) from $103.2 million at August 31, 2013 to $116.3 million at August 31, 2014. This increase was primarily due to the increase in the value of the Museum’s investment portfolio and the integration of the Higgins Armory Museum. The Higgins Integration resulted in an increase to the Worcester Art Museum’s endowment of over $4.1 million directly from Higgins Museum and an increase in pledge receivables as local foundations showed their support.

Unrestricted operating revenue was $12 million for this fiscal year, which is a $3.7 million increase over fiscal year 2013 unrestricted operating revenue of $8.3 million (44%). This increase derives from a 28% increase in investment income, 134% increase in gifts and grants, and a 39% increase in net assets released from restriction.

Unrestricted operating expenses grew by $1.1 million (12 %) from $9.5 million in fiscal year 2013 to $10.6 million in fiscal year 2014. The primary source of the increase was the Higgins Integration including the Knights! exhibition and related programming, which accounts for $1.5 million of the expenses in this fiscal year.

The integration of the Higgins Armory Museum had a substantial effect on the operations of this fiscal year. We expect this will be the case going forward until the collection has a permanent home, which is projected to be within five to seven years.

In 2020, the Worcester Art Museum is a top cultural destination in New England. We attract over 200,000 visitors annually to our exhibition spaces, and play a critical part in the cultural and economic vitality of the city of Worcester. Building on past successes, we expand our role as a focal institution in the region, providing cohesion to an ever-changing social fabric. As a highly motivated team, we further connect with our communities and build on the synergy with our partner institutions, including the eleven colleges and universities in Worcester.

Capitalizing on our medium size, our encyclopedic collection and a robust exhibition schedule, we emphasize our unique narrative – a narrative of connections: connecting art with individual experiences, joy and discovery, as well as connecting people, cultures, and histories with the here and now of a globalizing world. This narrative is supported by our visitor-focused culture, a highly welcoming environment and an all-pervading openness to experimentation and creative thinking.
