Content Note
This collection consists of photocopied letters written by William Lloyd Garrison from various other repositories.
These letters were collected and used by Walter Merrill during his research for the book, No Union With Slave-
Holders: The Letters of William Lloyd Garrison, 1841-1849, Volume III. In addition to the letters, this collection
contains Dr. Merrill’s research notes related to research on individual letters. The letters with notes also extend
beyond the period of the book as they date from 1831-1879. For the most part, the letters are arranged
chronologically and in most cases include a photocopy of the original letter, a typed transcription and the research
notes. All letters include a note which identifies the repository holding the original letter. The guide lists the
recipients of the letters in each folder. In addition to research materials, there are also some drafts and indexes
