CELEBRATING 15 YEARS WITH $15 MILLION HAWAIIAN RIDE FOR YOUTH, 21 - 25 MARCH 2017 More than 175 cyclists are gearing up to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the famed Hawaiian Ride for Youth in March this year. Taking place over four and a half days from March 21-25, the Ride has become known as one of Western Australia’s premier charity events, raising awareness and funds for Youth Focus and its work in preventing youth suicide and depression. From humble beginnings in 2003, the Ride has raised a total of more than $15 million with all funds going directly to Youth Focus. Funds help to support the provision of free, unlimited, expert therapeutic counselling services to more than 2,500 young people and their families throughout Western Australia, from Geraldton to Albany. This year sees the introduction of a fourth peloton, the Mid West route that extends from Geraldton to Perth, making way for an additional eight teams in the Ride. The riders across the 34 teams will cycle almost 3000 kilometres on the four routes from Albany to Perth – Coastal, Inland and Wheatbelt – as well as the new Mid West route. The addition of the Mid West route will see riders travel 700 kilometres from Geraldton through Morawa, Dalwallinu, New Norcia and Northam, before riding into Kings Park. Hawaiian Ride for Youth Chairman Bruce Fielding said the nationally awarded Ride was a unique event that went a long way in spreading the Youth Focus message and highlighting important social issues among young people. “The Ride is an excellent opportunity for participants to keep fit and build new friendships, while supporting a great cause and spreading the Youth Focus message,” Mr Fielding said. “The deep level of engagement from participants and their genuine drive to improve the lives of young Western Australians creates a wonderful event full of camaraderie, dedication and motivation. “Along the journey, the riders stop at 23 regional high schools and engage students in the issues of youth suicide, depression and self-harm. For many riders, the school visits are the most rewarding part of the event, giving them the opportunity to spread awareness of the services that Youth Focus provides and share their own personal stories,” he said. Youth Focus CEO, Fiona Kalaf, said the statistics around suicide were alarming, with one Western Australian taking their own life every day. continued on page 3 March 15, 2017 www.walpole.org.au Community newspaper proudly published by the Walpole CRC in litter-free Walpole. “This is why events like the Hawaiian Ride for Youth are so important in raising awareness about mental health issues as well as raising the funds needed to support vulnerable young people,” Ms Kalaf said. In its third year, the CEO Challenge from Mandurah to Kings Park is an important highlight of the Ride giving prominent Western Australian senior executives the opportunity to escape the office setting and experience a special part of this incredible event.

CEO Challenge participants in 2017 will include Hollywood Private Hospital CEO Peter Mott, Azure Capital Managing Partner Adrian Arundell and Federal Finance Minister Mathias Cormann.

The challengers will ride the final leg of the epic ride from Mandurah to Perth together with the cyclists from the three Albany to Perth routes. Three pelotons of the Hawaiian Ride for Youth start from Albany with a fourth starting from Geraldton.

Each peloton will cover 700km to Perth via regional towns including Katanning, Narrogin, Walpole, Pemberton, Busselton, Frankland River, Bridgetown, Gnowangerup, Manjimup, Collie and Mandurah on the Coastal, Inland and Wheatbelt routes, and Geraldton, Morawa, Dalwallinu, New Norcia and Northam on the Mid West route.

A Correction

An error in my last week’s ‘Weekly’ article ‘What Attitude’ suggests the conflation of two distinct aircraft, ‘The Growler’ and ‘The Joint Strike Fighter’, both with separate capabilities and purchased by the Australian Federal Government for National Defence. For this confusion I apologise.

Manjimup announced as a celebration community for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay The Queen’s Baton Relay is coming to Manjimup and you can be a part of its journey to the start of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

The Queen’s Baton Relay launched from Buckingham Palace in London on 13 March this year containing a message from Her Majesty the Queen. The Baton will travel to all nations and territories of the Commonwealth before arriving in Australia where the Baton will travel around Australia for 100 days. When the Queen’s Baton arrives at the Opening Ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Her Majesty’s message will be removed from the Baton and read aloud to declare the Games open.

3,800 Batonbearers are needed to carry the Baton across Australia and online nominations are now open for 10 weeks until 15 May 2017.

“It is an honour to be chosen as a celebration community for the Baton Relay, as it will lift the profile of our amazing region, showcasing some of the Commonwealth’s most spectacular natural landscapes as the Baton travels through,” explained Shire President Paul Omodei. “Everyone has a local hero, their inspiration or mentor, and these are the people you need to nominate to be a part of local and national history as a Batonbearer,” said Cr Omodei.

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC said “As it travels through the country the Baton will bring people together from across our nation’s vast and varied landscapes, from red deserts to rainforests and mountains to islands, from our city precincts to beyond the black stump. It’s a journey that is sure to increase our sense of connection and understanding of each other.”

Fourth anniversary of the National Youth Week Festival Day April 2017 National Youth Week 2017 takes place from 31 March - 9 April, as a celebration of our youth and the valuable contribution this age group of 12 to 25 year olds makes to our community and communities all over Australia. For the past four years the Shire of Manjimup Youth Network has held a free festival day which has been working its way around the towns of Pemberton, Walpole, Northcliffe and locality of Quinninup to acknowledge and commemorate youth. This year is Northcliffe’s turn to host the free Shire of Manjimup Youth Network, Youth Week celebration for 2017, taking place at the skate park in Zamia St from 11am until 4pm on Saturday 8th April. Various activities such as bubble soccer, a dunk tank, tie dying and rock climbing will be taking place across the day. One of the biggest drawcards is sure to be the local musical performers and the Flaming Idiots circus performers who will be entertaining the crowd over the day. The youth of the Shire of Manjimup have been involved in the planning and hosting of the event through advising what activities they would like to participate in on the day through to deciding what food will prepared and provided. The Manjimup High School years 9s designed several posters to promote the event with the winning poster being created by Hannah, Casey and Bonnie. “We want to acknowledge our young people and this youth week celebration will give them the opportunity to be entertained, learn some new skills, meet new people and visit one of our facilities that they perhaps don’t often get to,” said the Shire of Manjimup Youth Officer, Sharon Wilkinson. The day is a totally free event for youth from the food and workshops to the bus transport being provided to Northcliffe from Manjimup, Pemberton and Walpole. People are being asked to reserve their place on the bus early by calling Sharon Wilkinson at the Shire of Manjimup on 9771 7777. If no reservations are received by 1 April the buses will have to be cancelled. With almost a third of the population of the Shire of Manjimup being ‘youth’ and a significant number of those young people contributing to our community through volunteering and being involved in community groups, the festival’s ultimate aim is to acknowledge and show appreciation to the young people and the valuable contribution that they make to our communities.

The Elections, local scene “Thank you to the people of Warren-Blackwood for returning me as your local member for another 4 years. It is such an honour.”

These were the words posted on Facebook by the Hon Terry Redman MLA just after 10pm on Saturday night, when it became obvious that he had successfully retained his Legislative Assembly seat of Warren-Blackwood, in the name of The Nationals.

The Walpole Polling Place processed just under 400 voters from Warren-Blackwood electorate.

With rain a possibility, chairs were placed inside the Walpole Community Centre for the comfort of electors waiting to vote.

An outstanding number of Declaration Voters presented to vote, with the line running out the Community Centre’s front door on several occasions.

Tingledale Hall saw the usual ebb and flow of local and visiting voters dropping in en-route to or from the beach

The Legislative Assembly and Council ballot papers were printed and distributed as conjoined papers separated by perforations. Electoral officials separated them at the point of issue. Not only did this create printing and distribution efficiencies, it negated the possibility of an elector being issued with the wrong matching ballot paper.
