Wallwood, a bit of our history!

Wallwood Boy Scout Reservation lies on a tract of land over 600 acres in size along the

shore of Lake Talquin in Gadsden County, Florida. The name Wallwood comes from the

principal donors of the land, Dr. Charlie K. Wall and his wife Margaret. They

donated 476 acres to the Suwannee River Area Council in 1962, and the remainder

came from the State of Florida and the Pittman family, whose family cemetery remains

on the property near the Fregley Building. Wallwood was dedicated in 1964 with a large

ceremony and campout, and summer camp operations began in 1966.

Adult Registration Troops with eight or more Scouts may bring two adult leaders for free. Additional leaders must pay a fee of $100 per week. Troops with fewer than eight boys will need to pay the $100 per week fee for all adults. We understand that many Troops are unable to provide two full time leaders and, in order to comply with two-deep leadership standards, schedule multiple adults to switch throughout the week. We will require a schedule of alternating adults be submitted to the Camp Director no later than May 31st. Should this schedule of rotating adults not be submitted, each unauthorized adult will be required to pay $10 per meal and $25 per night camping fees.

Provisional Campers

Wallwood does not have a formal Provisional Scout program. Individual Scouts wanting to attend Summer Camp must contact the Camp Director to confirm arrangements to attend with a Host Troop. [email protected]

Camperships

The Suwannee River Area Council has a limited amount of funding available as “camperships” to assist our Scouts of limited means to attend Camp. Check In Your Troop should plan to arrive at camp between 1:00pm and 3:00pm on Sunday. No

one will be allowed into camp to check in or drop off Troop equipment prior to 1:00pm. All attending members in your Troop will be escorted to the Mess Hall for check in by your Troop Guide.

During check in, each scout and adult leader will receive their name badge, submit their Firearms Permission forms, Health forms A, B, and C, and are given the opportunity to meet and greet with the Area Directors. Merit badge changes will be considered based on availability.

Following Check-In, your Troop guide will escort your Troop to the campsite where they will be left to do a preliminary check of the condition of the campsite. Meanwhile, the Troop guide and Adult leaders will retrieve vehicles containing gear, and be guided at a walking pace to the campsite and back out to the parking lot. Your Troop will then proceed to the pool for their swim test. Should bad weather prevent swim tests at this time, make-ups will be held Monday morning before breakfast. Parking/ Troop Trailers

Vehicles must be left in the main parking lot at all times after gear drop-off. Only designated camp staff vehicles are permitted in camp. Trailers containing gear may be taken into camp. Trailers must be parked so as not to obstruct the free flow of traffic. Once gear or supplies have been emptied from vehicle and trailer detached, the vehicle must be parked in the parking lot. No loitering of vehicles is allowed in camp. No personal camper/trailers are permitted on camp property. Leaders’ Meeting Meetings between youth and adult unit leaders, the Camp Director and Program Director are held several times during camp. Special announcements concerning the camp, it’s policies, and procedures will be included in the meeting. Any specific questions you have about the camp operations will also be answered so it is important that you attend. The first Leaders’ meeting will be held on Sunday evening (please consult the camp schedule in Appendix for specific times: Page 34). Uniforms

To assist unit leadership in encouraging proper uniforming among the youth, Full Class A uniforms are worn at all flag ceremonies and at both the morning and evening meals. During the day and evening, all will wear attire appropriate to the program area in which they are participating. Closed toe shoes are required at all times (exceptions include while using showers).

Please note that NO laundry facilities are available to campers.

Patrol Flags Baden-Powell said, “The patrol method is not a way to operate a Scout Troop, it is the only way.” To help Troops provide recognition of patrol spirit, we are encouraging your patrols to bring their flags to camp. Trading Post Our Trading Post is stocked with merit badge pamphlets, advancement supplies, souvenirs, and refreshments. Records show that Scouts spend $50-$60 during their week at camp. Please bring change and dollar bills to camp so we can avoid a small change crunch! Damaged Equipment Charge Each unit is responsible for taking care of camp equipment assigned for their use. In case of damage to this equipment or general camp property, the individual or unit is responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement at the discretion of the Camp Director and Camp Ranger. Personal Firearms Please leave all personal bows, firearms, and ammunition at home! Should such equipment find its way to camp, it must be checked in with the Shooting Sports Director, who will safely store it until checkout. Liquid Fuels All liquid fuels present a potential safety and fire hazard. Use of liquid fuels inside a tent is PROHIBITED. Only adults or youth aged 12+, under the supervision of an adult, may use liquid fuels in camp. Drugs, Alcohol, & Tobacco Prescription drugs must be checked into the Camp Medic. Non-prescription drugs (aspirin, cough syrup, etc.) are also to be used only with the approval of the Camp Medic. Local authorities will deal with those using illegal substances. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products are not permitted on camp property. Anyone in possession or under the influence of alcohol will be required to leave camp immediately. Tobacco products must be used off of camp property, outside of the camp gates. Knives in Camp Certain parts of the camp program include instruction in the proper use of a knife as a tool. In other cases, the knife may be a necessary tool in the successful completion of an activity. However, none of the programs offered as part of the camp program require the use of a knife longer than a four-inch blade. All scouts carrying knives or using other wood cutting tools must possess a “Totin’ Chip,” which may be earned at the Scoutcraft area.

Pets (NO PETS IN CAMP) Campers’ and Leaders’ pets should be left at home. Camp abounds with wildlife. Please do not handle any on site wildlife. Valuables The camp staff is not responsible for the safety of camper’s valuables. Please keep all money in a safe location while at program areas. Check Out After flags on Saturday morning, pick-up breakfast at the Dining Hall to take back to your campsite to eat. Once your campsite is ready for final inspection, send a representative to the Administration Office to let the Commissioner Staff know you are ready to leave. If any damage is noted, it can be settled at the administration building. You will need to send a representative from your Troop by the Health Lodge to collect your medical forms and any medication. Record Pick Up Saturday morning, following the posting of the colors, Troops will be given their advancement records for each scout for the week. All Area Directors, Program and Camp Directors will be on hand in the Admin Bld. to answer any questions regarding records. Please take a moment to look over your records beforehand, should any questions arise staff will gladly address these. It is much more difficult to answer questions regarding advancements after you leave camp. Records will not be made available before Saturday morning flags. Should your Troop leave before this time records will be emailed or mailed to the Scoutmaster and/or made available at the SRAC Scout Shop.

Health & Safety Info Medications at Camp All prescription drugs (including those needing refrigeration) are to be kept in locked storage either in the health lodge or lock box controlled by unit leadership. An exception may be made for a limited amount of medication to be carried by a camper, leader, parent or staff member for life-threatening conditions. These include heart medication, and inhalers or for a limited amount of medication approved for use in a first aid kit. Please take this policy seriously. Some medications that might be needed in an emergency can and should be held at the campsite; such medications include: Epipen, Glucagon, Asthma inhalers. Medications that are usually found in a first aid kit such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, topical antibiotics and non-drowsy allergy medications such as over-the-counter Claritin could also be available in the campsite. All other medications, prescription and over-the-counter, should be retained in the Medic’s Lodge.

Medication according to the recommended storage requirements and dispensed from the Medic’s Lodge at prescribed times each day after proper identification of the scout is assured. It is the responsibility of the scout and scoutmaster to go to the Health Lodge when medication needs to be administered. A record of medication administration will be kept in the Medical log. At the conclusion of camp, the containers and medications will be returned to the unit leader.

Some non-prescription over-the-counter medications will be available in the Medic’s Lodge. These include Tylenol, ibuprofen, Benadryl, and simple cough and cold medications. Dressings for simple abrasions and burns as well as topical antibiotics and antiseptic solutions will also be available. Aspirin will be available in the event of an emergency cardiac problem.

Prescription medications are for the named patient only. Scout leaders and medical personnel agree to accept the responsibility to oversee the administration of medications. But it is essential that each medication is in its own original labeled container. Every Scout who has a need for a prescription should have his own supply. A zip-lock bag of pills is dangerous and will not be allowed, the practice is unreliable and unacceptable. Medical Exams

Each Youth and Adult (full time and rotating) who attends camp must have a health history attested by a medical evaluation performed by a licensed physician and completed within 12 months before arrival at camp. (Please fill out form found on: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_ABC.pdf )

Any Scout or Scouter arriving in camp without the completed Annual Health and Medical Record, including the prior medical examination will be restricted from all camp activities until an examination is secured. There is no provision for the required examination to be completed at camp. Camp Wallwood leadership reserves the right to refuse admittance to anyone who, in the opinion of the examining person and the Camp Director, has any physical or medical condition which could present a hazard to the individual or others.

Special Insurance Note The Annual Health and Medical Record form requests personal health and accident insurance carrier and policy number. This must be completed in case of an emergency. Please check and verify that this data is present on the form and current. All Troops attending camp must be covered by accident insurance. Out of council Troops will be required to show proof of insurance at the time of check in. This can be provided by your local Council Service Center in print. Youth members and registered adults of the Suwannee River Area Council are already covered by local accident insurance. Health Lodge A health facility is located at Camp Wallwood and is staffed by person(s) trained to handle minor accidents and illnesses. If special treatment is needed, or an emergency situation regarding a camper’s health occurs, the camper’s parents will be notified and their desires concerning further treatment will be respected. After hours, the Camp Medic may be located in the Health Lodge.

1. It is the responsibility of the unit leadership to provide transportation for a unit member requiring services from a doctor or hospital. Camp will provide transportation only when a unit has inadequate transportation or if an injury requires Medic Staff in attendance.

2. One adult leader from the unit will accompany the unit member requiring services to a doctor or hospital. The adult leader must obtain the Scout’s health record and any insurance forms from the Camp Medic before going to the doctor or hospital.

3. Parents/Guardians will be notified of any serious illness or injury. If the parents will not be home during the week of camp, please provide where and how they can be located and contacted.

4. The Camp Medic must clear all cases requiring outside medical care. 5. Those leaving camp for medical reasons of any nature should check out with the Camp

Medic. Upon returning to camp, they should check in with the camp medic and show documentation of release and any medical restrictions and care. If not returning to camp, they should contact the scout office at (850)576-4146 and leave a message with contact info.

Program

Camp Wallwood’s Program offers a wide range of activities for all individuals. Camp has a great number of advancement opportunities and adventures, so be sure to take advantage of our small classroom sizes.

Your program should be based on the needs and desires of the individuals in your unit.

To ensure your unit’s needs are met, merit badge schedules must be submitted before May 15th, 2020 (earlier is better). There is limited space in several of these courses in order for our staff to provide the best experience possible. Courses are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Units that submit schedules that list courses that have been filled will be asked to have their youth choose another course or camp staff will select an alternative for the youth if not done in a timely manner. Scout Merit Badge selection schedules must be submitted via an excel spreadsheet or the attached MB form. Please follow the template provided on Page 26.

General Merit Badge Note: Although we do our best to select merit badges which can be

completed at camp, some of these merit badges cannot be completed at camp. Most of the incompletions have been noted at the bottom of their respective merit badges. The scouts, however, will be able to leave with a very large portion of the requirements completed. Partials Individuals planning to complete a merit badge that they have already started must present a properly completed merit badge blue card showing the requirements that have been completed. Camp counselors cannot sign-off for requirements that are not completed at camp. Any scout that does not complete a merit badge at camp will be issued a “partial” for the work completed at camp.

swimmer is invaluable. Scouts that wish to learn how to swim or improve their technique should take full advantage of our staff’s knowledge during Instructional Swim.

Waterfront Wallwood has a picturesque lakefront on its southwest side, where scouts can learn a wide range of boating techniques and practices. The Waterfront is only open during the day when the aquatics staff is on duty. When participating in activities at the waterfront, scouts should bring a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, and shoes that can get wet (not flip-flops). Shooting Sports Shooting Range

Every young man wants the chance to do some shooting and show off his skill with a .22 rifle, shotgun, or the bow and arrow. Remember that shooting sports will discipline the mind and the body, so just relax and have a great time. The shooting sports MB’s require lots of time and practice. As with all of the program areas, the main aspect of the shooting ranges is safety. The rules may seem strict at times, but they ensure a fun, safe area that everyone can enjoy.

Merit Badges Offered for 2020: Archery Rifle Shotgun Special Notes: ScoutMaster shoot is Thursday at 4:30pm

All youth who wish to shoot at the firearm range must have a signed “Firearm Use Permission Slip”. See also appendix page 25.

Firearms Permission: Notice to Parents/Guardians

Trailblazers (Scout to First Class Rank)

Trailblazer Pavilion One of the goals of Camp Wallwood is to help Scouts to advance in rank. One of the

tools available to the Scoutmaster is the Trailblazer program. Here there will be a willing staff that will make it possible to meet your advancement needs at Camp Wallwood.

Your Scouts will spend the first 5 periods of the day in the Trailblazer program with the sixth session available to a MB of their choosing. Plan accordingly. Note: Swimming MB and First Aid MB are built into this program (4th and 5th Periods).

When each Scout enters the Trailblazer Center the staff will guide the scout through their needed requirements. The procedure will be: The scout will be taught the skill, and then he/she is challenged on the skill. We highly recommend that you the Scoutmaster/ASM then Challenge them again before signing off in his handbook.

Scouts who are planning to participate in the Trailblazer program, will need the following equipment for a one-night Backpack campout:

1. 2 Person tent 2. Sleeping Bag 3. First Aid Kit 4. Eating Utensils (Mess kit) 5. Personal Toiletry Kit All overnight campout belongings will be carried out to their campsite by the individual campers. Pack light and leave the unnecessary things at home or basecamp!

Special Programs Camp Wallwood offers special programs throughout the week. Your unit’s camp experience would not be complete without participating in several of these. The times and events are listed on the Camp Wallwood Program Schedule. Camp-wide Campfire There will be a campfire on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. The staff will run the opening campfire on Sunday. The OA will run the campfire on Wednesday evening which will conclude with OA Call Outs. The closing campfire will be put on by the units with the assistance of the staff. Camp-wide Games These activities will be held on weekday evenings. Youth unit leadership and camp staff develops activities in which the patrols are to compete. A great team building activity. Family Night Family Night will remain on Wednesday Night by popular request! This gives parents and families that come the opportunity to join their Scouts for a campfire made dinner, watch the Order of the Arrow perform Call Outs and Campfire. Wednesday evening’s meal will be provided to registered campers only. Families that wish to bring outside food for themselves and campers may feel free to do so. There are no facilities at camp to allow parents or children not registered for camp to stay overnight. Twilight Hour Rotating Program Areas will be open for youth to finish up the day’s work, work on alternative Merit Badges, or kick back and relax.

Unit Activities Activities include: archery shoot, rifle shoot, unit swim, boating, volleyball, team-building games, and flag ceremonies. The volleyball court is always open. Schedule time to build unit and patrol coordination with the initiative game activities. Units may also sign up to conduct the morning and evening flag ceremonies.

Awards Camp Wallwood offers additional awards for those patrols, units, and individuals that put out an extra effort while they are at camp. Honor Troop Award Troops will be given the opportunity to earn the Camp Wallwood Honor Troop Award. To receive this award, the Troop must meet 8 of the 10 requirements. To qualify, the Troop must submit a letter outlining how the requirements were achieved to the Program Director by noon on Friday. The awards will be presented at the Friday night campfire. (See Appendix: Page 33)

Visitor Policy Parents and family are permitted to visit but MUST CHECK IN AT THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING WITH A PHOTO ID TO OBTAIN VISITOR BADGE. Outside visitors that do not have a visitor badge will be asked to return to the Admin Building. Should visitors refuse to check in they will be escorted off of the premises. Appropriate visiting times include: Meals, Campfires, and family night. We ask that Scouts are not pulled out of Merit Badge Course and programs are not disrupted, our Scouts are here to learn. Visitors that would like to join dining hall meals are required to pay for a $5 meal ticket in the Admin Building at time of check-in. Purchase will be indicated on their visitor badge.

Adult Opportunities Camp is also a great place for adult leaders to enjoy activities, relax, and take part in advanced training courses. During the week adult leaders may participate in:

- Youth Protection Training

We also ask that adults with specialized skills such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry and medical expertise identify themselves when entering camp for volunteer opportunities around camp. There are many projects around camp and we would be happy to have your help! Scoutmaster Merit Badge

Leaders can receive this badge for taking part in different activities around camp. To earn this badge, adults must complete at least 15 out of the 20 requirements. Scout leaders are “on your honor” to fulfill the requirements. Upon completion, leaders can turn the form in to the Admin Building to receive their recognition. Camp Staff

Dear Scoutmasters, Troop Leaders, Assistant Scoutmasters, Patrol Leaders and Adult Volunteers! Would you, or someone you know like the opportunity to be a part of the Wallwood Camp Staff that has led and created the program that you and your Scouts have so enjoyed in the past? Would you like to be a part of a dynamic and energetic team committed to bringing their love of Camp Wallwood and Scouting to Scouts and campers? If you are interested, we are too! Apply now to join the 2020 Camp Staff of Wallwood! Why apply for a camp staff job? Here are a few of the countless reasons that are frequently expressed:

- To make lots of new friends in your area, other states, and even other countries - To spend a summer in the great outdoors where nature prevails - To acquire experiential education (learning by doing) and new skills that will last a lifetime - To be part of an effective team and to cooperate with others to get things done - To learn how to lead others and to apply leadership skills - To undertake & fulfill meaningful challenges and to earn the satisfaction of doing a job well - To work with youth and adults of all ages - To serve others (the most noble and fulfilling pursuit of all) - To give something back for the opportunities you have received - To live in a wholesome environment based on the Scout Oath and Law - To have meaningful spiritual experiences - To have advice, counsel & support of senior staff who are dedicated to helping you succeed - To be paid and receive food & lodging in return for something challenging and fun - To be considered for jobs of greater responsibility and to receive letters of recommendation for

other pursuits

Why work at a fast food or retail establishment that focuses on sales when you can have opportunities like these that will prepare you for more meaningful endeavors? We all recall the thrill and prospect of camping as youth. The opportunity to sleep out under the stars away from home, it didn’t matter how far away from home- just camping. That adventure is still the promise of Scouting, and now is the time for you to be one of the many Scouters who are working to bring that thrill to the next generation of Scouts. A Camp Staff application has been attached following this letter for your convenience. Please make as many copies as is necessary, and send the completed form before February 1st to the Council Office at:

2032 Thomasville Road Tallahassee, FL. 32308

Our Council Camp Director, Bob Norwillo would love to hear from you – [email protected]! If you have any questions about the application or the program, please call Bob Norwillo at (850) 576-4146, and if you have friends or family who would also like to apply, direct them to this website where they can download an application: http://www.suwanneeriver.net
