It was great to see lots of excited but nervous new Wallington people enjoying their first experience of class life at school. I can’t wait to see them again next week for a longer stay. Grade Six Surfing Last week the Grade Six students were lucky enough to be taken surfing for their PE lesson. They all did a great job on a beautiful day having a go and most were able to stand up! Today is the last session. Thanks to Ms Bazeley for organising the sessions. Colour Run Unfortunately because of the upcoming works to be under taken on the oval in December Parents and Friends in consultation with myself have made the decision to cancel this year’s Colour Run. We were unsure of the space that we would have available. Colour Run will return next year. 2020 Class Structures I understand that both students and parents are eagerly awaiting some information about our class structures for 2020! We are just waiting on some last minute information with regards to staffing and student numbers before we can finalise our class structure for next year. It is our aim to announce the teachers and their grades as early as possible, hopefully within the next two weeks. Term 4 Curriculum Day: Friday 15 th November – no students will be required at school. Being Sunsmart at WPS I encourage parents to add the free Sunsmart app to your phone. Being aware of UV levels is vital as we collectively make greater efforts to protect our children and ourselves from damaging our skin – ‘Our skin never forgets!’ As the spring weather certainly advances, we need to all develop habits of sun screening up each morning before school and then reapplying during the day. We encourage all students to bring their own sunscreen to school and applying prior to recess and lunch breaks. Helping Your Child To Speak And Listen Talking with your child Regularly talking and interacting with your child extends their language and listening skills and helps grow their confidence with language. Include your child when discussing everyday activities such as grocery shopping, gardening, cooking dinner, collecting mail from the mailbox, doing housework, and travelling in the car or bus. Outings can also provide a world of new vocabulary. Discussion dur- ing outings can enrich your child’s understanding of the world. Out- ings might include going to the park, the zoo, a shopping centre, museums, libraries and art galleries. Other fun activities can include: Share rhymes, poems and songs. Encourage your child to join in. Share and talk about family histories and family photos. Look at picture books or art books. Ask your child to describe what is happening in the pictures and make up stories together. Collect cardboard and other household items for your child to build with. Ask your child to describe what they are building. Look at ‘junk mail’ and talk about the things for sale. Listen to simple radio programs or podcasts together and discuss the content. Play vocabulary games with your child such as, “what’s the opposite of ….?” (for example, “what’s the opposite of big?”) and “what’s another word for….?” (for example, “what’s another word for angry?”). Oral storytelling Storytelling is a great way to extend your child’s speaking and listen- ing skills, and to expand their memory and imagination. Either you can tell the story, or you can encourage your child to tell the story. Storytelling might be about: your child’s favourite toy * a pet another family member a favourite fictional character from a book or television program * a famous person the work of people from different professions, such as astronauts, firefighters, nurses and teachers an imaginary world with imaginary characters an imaginary animal that can speak.
