During the nesting season, dog walkers can help to protect these glorious little birds by avoiding the open heath. Up to 12 pairs of skylark nest here and we hope nightjar will return to breed. Both species nest on the ground and will abandon their nest if disturbed by dogs. With over 400 acres at Knettishall Heath, there is plenty of space for visitors and birds – so for a few months each year we ask dog walkers to keep to less sensitive areas whilst the birds are on their nests. How you can help The bird nesting season is from early March to late August. During this time please choose to walk your dog in the woodland areas or along the river. The Pine trail is designed for dog walkers and you can walk all year round without the need to keep your dog on a lead. If you do opt to walk on the open heath, your dog must be kept on a short lead during the nesting season.
