A letter from Co-Vice Presidents of Corporate Development, JDRF Bay Area Executive Board:

How Diabetes Affects Your Company

Statistics indicate that 21% of your employee base may be directly affected by diabetes, either personally or through someone in their immediate family. Diabetes is the single most costly chronic disease, accounting for over $174 billion annually in health care costs in the U.S. alone. There is no other non-profit in the world that provides more funding for diabetes research than JDRF. In 2010 alone, JDRF’s fundraising efforts have resulted in over $107 million in grants to support and guide the research efforts of biotech and pharmaceutical firms and research institutions throughout the world.

Join JDRF in our search for ways to prevent, better treat, and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes.

As corporate leaders, we believe in the power of the individual to make a difference, both in the work place and the community. Participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes gives colleagues a new project, a cause to rally around. The energy our employees generate as they work to reach their fundraising goal spills over into the workplace. It makes Walk season a great time of year in our offices. We even find ourselves competing with each other to see which of our companies, Wells Fargo or Fireman’s Fund, will have the most walkers. Last year it was a tie, but one team contends that they are the clear winner since one of their employees was pregnant at the time, and she should count as two walkers. Join us at the Walks this fall to witness the rematch…

Your company is an important part of the Bay Area community, and has the capacity to make a large impact on this community by participating in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. We hope to see you there.

Best,

John Shrewsberrypresident, wells fargo securities

About JDRF & Type 1 DiabetesJDRF is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder of and advocate for type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its potential complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. To help improve the lives of people with type 1 diabetes while working toward a cure, one of JDRF’s research goals is to support research to develop products that can dramatically improve blood glucose control in people with type 1 diabetes so they can live healthier lives with less risk of developing disease-related complications.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research, including more than $107 million last year. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education.
