11.1 Nursery Preparation:

a) Foundation seeds have to be soaked in salt water for removing weak seeds.

b) The seeds have to be soaked in water for whole night.

c) The germinated seeds have to be kept ready.

d) PVC trays of size 28 x 55 x 2 cm have to be placed in seed bed.

e) Soil has to be filled in to the tray to the height of 1.75 cm.

f) 120 to 130 gms of germinated seeds have to be sown in the tray in uniform manner.

g) Thin layer of sand has to be covered on the seeds.

h) Paddy straw has to be placed on the top of tray for two days.

i) Irrigation has to be done from both sides of the tray, water enters from the holes of the

tray.

j) The coverage of the paddy straw has to be removed on third day.

k) The seedlings are ready for transplantation 15 to 20 days or 12 to 15 cm by height.

l) The irrigation to the seed bed as to be stop one day prior to transplanting.

After loading the Transplanter fully (full loading of the nursery on the seedling

platform and carrier), the transplanting operation was done. Arrangements for loading the

nursery trays were made on the bunds of the plot. All the trials were conducted at the full

accelerator setting of the engine as recommended by the applicant.

The tests were conducted with the following settings of the transplanter: -

11.2 Rate of work: -

The average area covered and time required to cover one hectare area was recorded as

0.131 to 0.164 ha/h and 6.10 to 7.63 h respectively at the forward speed of 2.05 to 2.14

kmph.

11.3 Quality of work: -

The quality of work was assessed by taking into consideration of the following

parameters:

The average depth of transplanting was recorded as 4-5 cm.

The spacing between rows was recorded as 30 to 31 cm.

The av. number of plants per hill was recorded as 3 to 4

The average spacing between hills was recorded as 14 – 15 cm.

The average total number of hills in 5 m row length was recorded as 29 to 32

The average number of hills per sq. m. was recorded as 26 – 28.

The average percentage of missing hills was recorded as Nil – 8.32.

The average percentage of floating seedlings was recorded as 2.42 – 4.75

The average buried seedlings were recorded as Nil – 1.79.

The total percentage of transplanting faults was recorded as 4.75 to 14.88.

11.4 Fuel consumption:-

The hourly fuel consumption was recorded as 0.90 – 1.18 l/h and fuel required for planting

of one hectare area was recorded as 5.80 to 8.08 l.

11.5 Labour requirement: -

One skilled operator is required for continuous operation of machine. Operator requires

rest after every two hours of continuous operation. One helper for handling and loading

nursery mats on trays is required.

11.6 Operator’s comfort, safety and ease of operation: -

There was no difficulty observed during test in steering the machine. Side clutches

are provided on both sides of the handle bar for turning.

The machine is stable in the field as well as on the road transport. As rubberized steel

wheels are fitted, it was found safe and easier to transport the machine on road.

All controls are within the easy reach of the operator.

Two folding type side markers are provided and can be operated by the operator

while planter is in motion.

A detachable spare seedling carrier is mounted in front of the operator above the rear

bonnet to accommodate four seedling trays for replacing the nursery quickly in the

middle of field.

The machine is provided with automatic depth control system, which maintains the

even planting depth according to the variations in field level.

The quantity of seedlings can be easily adjusted with lever provided for it.

Plant population can be easily controlled by changing the hill to hill spacing in 6

different stages from 11.7 – 22.3 cm.

Hydraulic up/down system is provided for lifting entire machine at required position

to enable the operator to cross over the bunds and while turning the machine in the

field. No difficulty was noticed while crossing the field bunds.

The machine is provided with reverse speed so that planting at corners/missing area

can easily be done.

The engine, air cleaner, hydraulic cylinder, main gear box, fuel tank are protected

with bonnets. The belt transmission is covered with side covers. Side chain case,

propeller shaft, planting drive case and arms are well sealed.

A front bumper is provided for pulling the machine if trapped in the field and

protecting the machine from other objects.

A head light is also provided at the front of the machine.

11.7 Ingress of water and /or mud:-

After completion of field tests, the transplanter was partially dismantled to

check the effectiveness of sealings provided against ingress of water and/or mud in various

assemblies/components.

12. ADJUSTMENTS, DEFECTS, BREAKDOWNS AND REPAIRS

No breakdown occurred during 64.0 h of field and laboratory tests at this Institute.

13. COMPONENTS/ASSEMBLY INSPECTION

The engine was dismantled after 64.0 hours and the transplanter was dismantled after

54.1 hours of operation at this Institute.

13.2 Planter : -

The gears of the main gear box, planting box and planting mechanism, seedling tray

oscillating mechanism, chain cases and planting arms were dismantled and inspected

visually. The observations are as under: -

13.2.1 Main & planting gear box : -

The transmission gears, bearings and shafts were visually inspected and found no

abnormal wear or damage of components was noticed. All components were found in

normal working condition.

13.2.2 Planting arms: -

All the four planting arms were dismantled and inspected visually. The arms, cams,

bearings, springs and rod were found in normal working condition.

13.2.2 Seedling platform: -

The seedling platform and feeder were visually inspected and found in satisfactory

working condition.

13.2.3 Chain case and wheels : -

The chain cases of drive wheels were visually inspected. The chains, sprockets and

bearings were found to be normal working condition.

The average percentage of missed hills was recorded as Nil to 8.32.

The average percentage of floating seedlings was recorded as 2.42 to 4.75 .

The average buried seedlings were recorded as Nil to 4.76.

The total percentage of transplanting faults was recorded as 4.75 to 14.88.

The consumption of nursery trays was recorded as 251 to 271 numbers per hectare.

The hourly fuel consumption was recorded as 0.90 to 1.18 l/h and fuel required for

planting of one hectare area was recorded as 5.80 to 8.08 l.

14.4.1 During the field operation, no momentary overloading of the engine was noticed

throughout the test.

14.4.2 The quality of puddling, uniformity in leveling of the field, standing water over puddle,

uniformity of the nursery mats and presence of weeds, remains in the puddle soil affect the

performance of the planter to a great extent.

Therefore, to obtain the best results from the machine, it is necessary to have the well

puddled and settled field with 2 – 4 cm standing water.

14.4.3 The number of missing hills per square metre area is attributed mainly to the non-uniform

germination of the seedlings.

14.4.4 The quality of work was observed to be smooth during entire transplanting operation. The

overall performance of the machine was found satisfactory.

14.5 Components/assembly inspection: -

14.5.4 The engine was dismantled after 64.0 hours of operation and wear of critical components

were observed to be within the limits.

14.5.5 The main gear box, planting box, planting arm drive mechanism and bearings were

dismantled after 54.1 hours of operation and found in satisfactory working condition.

14.6 Safety provisions: -

The machine has the following safety provisions:

A front bumper.

Front and rear bonnet above the engine and gear box.

Drive belt protective covers.

14.7 Ease of operation and adjustments :-

All the controls, which are required to be used frequently are within the easy

reach of the operator.

The handling of machine was easy and stable and the operator can work

continuously for about two hours.

The planting depth, hill spacing and number of seedlings per hill can be adjusted

quickly.

The seedling carrier is provided just above the engine for holding nursery trays.

No other operational difficulty was noticed during the operation of the

transplanter even in the smaller fields.

Hydraulic system is provided to enable the operator to cross over the bunds and

while turning the machine (even with full load) in the field.

14.8 Labour requirement:-

A trained operator is required for efficient operation of the machine. One helper is

required for safe handling and loading of seedling trays.
