Wales is one of the four constituent countries of the United K ingdom. Traditionally a principality , Wales is located in the southwest of the island of Great B ritain bordering England to the east, the B ristol Channel to the south, the Irish S ea to the west and north, and the estuary of the River Dee in the upper northeast.A Welsh national identity emerged after the Roman withdrawal from B ritain in the early 5th century, and was later influenced by other European historical experiences. Cosmopolitan Cardiff , located in the southeast of the country and Wales' largest city, is the seat of Welsh government and the largest media center in B ritain outside of L ondon. Established as the capital of Wales in 1955, Cardiff is among Europe's 'youngest' capitals.
