£1,500 grants available for employers taking on new apprentices aged 16 to 24Are you a small to medium sized business with fewer than 250 employees? If so, you could be eligible for a grant of £1,500 when you take on a new apprentice aged between 16 and 24. This is in addition to the training costs of the apprenticeship framework which are already met in full for young people aged 16 to 18, and in part (50%) for those aged 19 to 24.

To take advantage of the £1,500 grant, you must employ your new apprentice for a minimum of 30 hours per week and you must be able to confirm that you have not taken on an apprentice during the past

three years. You must pay apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 and over who are in the first year of their apprenticeship the minimum apprenticeship wage of £2.65 per hour.

Apprentices aged 19 or above who have completed the first year of their programme must receive the National Minimum Wage appropriate for their age.

Up to three apprentices per employer can be employed with the benefit of this grant, as long as you can make a commitment to the total number you wish to take on at the start of the recruitment process.

You will receive the grant 13 weeks after the enrolment of your apprentice onto their chosen programme. This will be issued by the College directly to your company

Don’t delay - this scheme is only available until December 2013.

Contact Wakefield College today to take advantage of this superb opportunity both to benefit your business and start a young person on a new career. Telephone our Apprenticeship Unit on 01924 789469 or our Services to Business Unit on 01924 789715 or visit our website www.wakefield.ac.uk/apprenticeships.

Welcome Course InformationEnrolment Dates & Dates for Your Diary

This guide contains brief details of a range of courses available at Wakefield College to help you find what’s right for you.

We offer courses at various times throughout the year, and if you need any advice to help you decide, our advisors are only a phone call or a click of a mouse away.

Wakefield College is committed to supporting the Wakefield community and our courses are offered in the city centre at our Wakefield City Campus, at our

Thornes Park Campus on the edge of the city and at the Castleford Campus at Glasshoughton.

At the College, you can study to brush up your skills in English and Maths, study for GCSEs, A Levels, Access to Higher Education courses, HNCs, HNDs, Foundation Degrees, Honours Degrees and professional qualifications.

Whatever you choose to study, you’ll be in good company. Thousands of people study at Wakefield College every year - our average student is 24 years old and our oldest to date is 85 years young!

Course Information provides information, advice and guidance about our full range of courses. You can also speak to an advisor in person at the Thornes Park Campus.

Telephone: 01924 789111 or eMail: [email protected]

Our three core values of Employability, Excellence and Affordability combine to make Wakefield College your first choice for Higher Education.

EmployabilityBy focusing on Employability, we ensure that our students leave College fully equipped to enter the world of work and succeed in their chosen fields. How do we achieve this focus? By ensuring that our courses are kept up to date and relevant to the skills and knowledge employers really want. Over the years we have built strong links with employers which enable us to tailor our courses to their requirements and allow us to offer our students work placement or project work opportunities which make valuable additions to any CV.

We also ensure that our Higher Education programmes are focused on you and your personal and professional development goals. All our staff, whether academic or support staff, are dedicated to supporting you in the development of the personal and practical skills you need to start your chosen career, or, if you’re already working, to fulfil your potential and progress within your organisation.

ExcellenceOur core value of Excellence is endorsed by the results of National Student Surveys and reviews by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).

We pride ourselves on the high quality of our teaching, provided by dedicated professionals who are passionate about their subjects and about teaching. In most cases, our staff are not only professional teachers but also have years of experience in commerce or industry-experience which they are happy to share with their students. Time spent with these tutors is extremely valuable, so we ensure that on all our courses there is as much student-teacher contact time as possible, generally much more than you would have at many universities.

Our facilities also demonstrate our commitment to Excellence. Wakefield College has undergone a transformation in recent years, providing our students with a modern learning environment and first-class facilities. Whether you are based at our renovated and transformed Wakefield City Campus, our purpose-built Castleford Campus or new performing arts centre at the Waterton Building, you will find all the specialist facilities you need to help you succeed.

AffordabilityWe believe money matters should not stand in the way of educational and career progression. With lower tuition fees than most universities and a local cost of living that won’t break the bank, you may find gaining a Higher Education at Wakefield College surprisingly affordable!

Moreover, because many of our Higher Education courses are validated by major regional universities like Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Huddersfield, you will receive a recognised and respected qualification, but finish your programme with substantially less debt.

Did you know you can do a University level course at Wakefield College?

Are you aged 24 or over and thinking about further education? If you’re starting a course on or after 1 August 2013 you may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.

These loans help you to pay the fees charged by approved colleges and training organisations in England.

Most learners aged 24 and over studying at Level 3 or Level 4 or an Advanced or Higher Apprenticeship will qualify for these new loans from the UK government.

It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. You won’t

have to pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 a year.

Come along to one of our Information Days to find out more about 24+ loans and the range of courses we have to offer.

Look out for this symbol in the course listings section for courses eligible for the 24+ loan.

Your course tutor will be able to provide you with information about any additional charges.

What is a Advanced Learning Loan? The College does not receive funding for students aged 24+ on advanced and higher level FE courses. This includes level 3 and 4 QCF Certificates and

Diplomas, Access to Higher Education, A Levels and Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships.

Students aged 24+ who are enrolling on any of these courses must either pay their own fees or apply for an Advanced Learning Loan.

If you are intending to pay for your course using a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, but your loan is not in place at the start of your course, you will need to provide evidence that you have submitted your loan application.

You will also need to provide your bank details to us at enrolment. You will then have a period of four weeks from starting your course to provide evidence that your loan application has been successful.

If your loan has not been confirmed by this time then the College will collect your annual invoice value, over four monthly instalments.

If you withdraw from your course this does not cancel your fee liability to the College; you will be expected to pay your invoice less any student loan payments the College has received For more information see www.gov.uk/24_advanced_learning_loans

Following the opening of the brand new Castleford Campus in 2009, the College has seen the new Harrison Building open at the City Campus site following an £8 million investment.

The College has also seen its iconic Gissing building become home to the Art Department.

Plans for a new university centre for Wakefield are also

taking shape with the College working with key stake-holders to bring a dedicated HE centre to the District.

A £1 million makeover at the former Wakefield Museum site will see the Waterton Building open its doors to the public this summer, and will also house The Mechanics’ Theatre - the new home of the College’s Performing Arts students.
