Message from the Principal Endings and Beginnings The Christian Year is set to begin with the season of Advent beginning on the 30 th November. This season is based around thinking about the coming of Christ and what that means to us as Christian people. Advent means ‘the arrival of an important or noble thing’ and this four week season builds up to celebrating the birth of Christ. As the last church season of Pentecost draws to a close, we are starting to talk about the end times and look forward to God’s second coming. We also hear about how God will judge who is going to heaven and hell and what the end times will look like; that the end will herald wars and natural disasters (2 Timothy 3:1-5 - 2 Peter 3:3 - 3:4 - Revelation 13:16-17 - Matthew 24:1 - 24:51), just to name a few! With the events that happened in Paris on the weekend, the pending crisis in Syria and the daily local events that shock us as evil, we naturally question where God is in the world. By applying some biblical knowledge we could think the end of the world is nearly here. When I am led to question this, I know there is only one thing I need to focus on and that is my relationship with Jesus. There is a sure reason why advent follows talk about the end of the world and that is to remind us of where our focus should be. If Jesus died for you, what does that mean to you? Remembrance Day Last Wednesday, the WLPS Festival of Music Choir along with
the school captains attended the Remembrance Day Service
at the Memorial Park. The school captains represented the
school extremely well and the choir sang beautifully.
A Remembrance Day service was also held at WLPS lead by
Mr Fladrich. The students from Mrs Beeliz’s Foundation Class
placed hand made poppies around the flag pole as part of
the service.
Corner of Peace
Meekness: Not a word that is often used in today’s society. Probably this is because in popular culture meekness is viewed as a rather weak and wishy-washy sort of person-ality trait. Quite often the words gentle or humble are also used when translating the word meek in the Bible.
However Jesus recommended (in fact even mandated) meekness as a positive way of being. He spoke of himself as meek: in Matthew 11:29(NABRE) he says: 29 [a]Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. The Word, who created all things – wishy-washy? – I think not. And God does not change over the ages – he remains constant. So then why meekness!
A beautiful and truly helpful definition throws a completely different like on meek-ness; Meekness is defined as power under control. Now that is something to aspire to after all.
To end on a lighter note, I recently read this little ‘parable’ that speaks of 2 people – one was not meek or humble but rather self-important – the other however was meek and was honoured by God:
“A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island.
The two survivors who have been a good friends, not knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to God. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man’s parcel of land remained barren.
After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. How-ever, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the island. In the morning, he found a ship docked at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island. He considered the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered.
As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven booming, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”
“My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything.”
“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”
“Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “What did he pray for that I should owe him anything?”
“He prayed that all your prayers be answered “
God bless you all
