We are most thankful for the donors and sponsors of the Walk for Kindness who gifted prizes and in-kind services to help make the biggest LHS fundraiser of the year a success. Over 100 walkers and many, many dogs turned out for the 27th Annual Walk for Kindness on Saturday, September 21, 2013. Lee Davis of WCUB radio announced that collectively, almost $12,000 was raised for LHS! Those funds helped cover the costs to care for the homeless animals at Lakeshore Humane Society. Quite often that work seems monumental. There are so many animals in need that come to our facility; sometimes it seems there are not enough homes for everyone. But by some miracle, we are able to reunite or re-home about 85% of the lost and abandoned pets that are brought to LHS for help. Lakeshore Humane Society is blessed to have members, staff, and volunteers who donate many hours of their talent and time. These individuals are the backbone of LHS. Without their tireless efforts and dedication to the LHS mission, things at the shelter would not get accomplished. With your support, we are able move forward with our legacy to make the world a better place for the lost, abandoned and orphaned companion animals of Manitowoc County. President’s Purr-spective by Keith Philippi
Dear Friends of LHS,
Through the help of dedicated staff, volunteers, members and donors, theLakeshore Humane Society has been able toreunite or find forever homes for 1,065animals this year. This organizationmeasures how successful we areaccomplishing our mission based on 3metrics:
• Days in Care (aka Velocity)• Live Release Rate• Reclaim Rate
Increasing the velocity of animals movingthrough the facility decreases stress on theanimals and also decreases operating costs.
Under the leadership of Leshia Drewa, LHSShelter Manager, the organization hasachieved their monthly cat adoption goal of65 in October and November. In these samemonths, 247 animals were reunited, transferred to a rescue group or foundforever homes. LHS Live Release Rateaveraged 85% for all animals. Over 1,300homeless animals have crossed thethreshold of the Lakeshore Humane Societydoors this year where they have a chance offinding their forever family.
I encourage you to visit the shelter or checkus out online at www.lakeshorehumane.orgOnline you can see adoptable animals, findadoption forms, and learn about currentevents & shelter programs, volunteeropportunities, ways to help from home, oreven make a donation. There is also a linkto our popular Facebook page that postsstray animal photos from ManitowocCounty. LHS has an above average reclaimrate; the facebook page has been avaluable asset for reuniting lost pets withtheir owners.
With your support, we can continue to moveforward with our mission to make the worlda better place for the lost, abandoned andorphaned companion animals ofManitowoc County. If you have anyquestions or concerns, I would love to talkwith you. Please call the shelter and leave amessage for me.

Hi, I'm Leshia Drewa, manager ofLakeshore Humane Society. I also havebeen working for the shelter as a medicalcare specialist since April. I went to GlobeUniversity to obtain my associates inapplied science in Veterinary Technology.I currently live in Appleton with myhusband, Josh and two Siberian huskiesNavi and Tundra. I can be seen at LHStalking to customers, helping animalswith medical needs, & going out in thecommunity doing adoption events.
I want to bring to light one of LHS's hugemilestones from the past couple months;in October we had 92 adoptions and inNovember 94. Although our adoptionrates are higher than they once were; weare still in need of adopters, fosters andsponsors as LHS is brimming withanimals to care for. Every animal deservesto have a family to help open gifts onChristmas morning. LHS currently has 31dogs, 97 adult cats, 83 kittens, 1 rabbitand 1 guinea pig in its care. I look forwardto see the adoption numbers continue tosoar. Lakeshore Humane Society staff isbeing trained in dog behavior &techniques to meet more specific needs ofthe dogs that come into our care. In 2014,a dog park for previous and potentialadopters so they can socialize theircanines will be completed. We also areworking harder than ever to gainrelationships with other rescue groups totransfer animals to different rescues thatmight be better suited to meet their needs.
It has been a great honor working for LHSthus far and I would like to do my part toreach out to the community and geteveryone on board to help save thehomeless pets of Manitowoc County.Besides the previously stated ways to helpLHS; you can support LHS by word ofmouth. Tell all your friends & family aboutyour experiences with LHS.
If you have a specific question, please feelfree to call me at LHS (920)684-5401.
Happy Holidays,Leshia Drewa

Tax-Free Distributionsfrom Your IRA
In 2013, if your age is over 70.5 years, you areeligible to make tax-free distributions fromIndividual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) for acharitable purpose.
Normally the required minimum distributions (RMD)are considered taxable income. Uncle Sam let youput money into your IRA without payingtaxes on it with the understanding you would pay taxwhen you take the money out in retirement. BUT anygift made directly to a charity is exempt from this tax. This offers a wonderful opportunityto give to LHS.

MEMORIALS
Wall of LoveA ceramic tile with imprint will be placed on thereception area walls as remembrance oracknowledgement
And On the ninth day God looked down on his wideeyed children and said“they need a companion”. So Godmade a dog.
God said: “I need somebody willing to wake up - givekisses, pee on a tree, sleep all day, wake up again givemore kisses. Then stay up until midnight basking in theglow of the television set.”So God made a dog.
God said: “I need somebody willing to sit, then stay, thenroll over, then with no ego or complaint dress in hatsthey don't need and costumes they don't understand. Ineed somebody who can break wind without a first careor a second thought.
Who can chase tails, sniff crotches, fetch sticks and liftspirits with a lick. Somebody who no matter what youdidn't do or couldn't take or didn't win or couldn't makewill love you without judgement just the same.”So God made a dog.
God said: “I need somebody strong enough to pull sledsand find bombs, yet gentle enough to love babies andlead the blind. Somebody who will spend all day on acouch with a resting head and supportive eyes to lift thespirits of a broken heart.”So God made a dog.
It had to be somebody who'd remain patient and loyaleven through loneliness. Somebody to care and cuddlesnuggle and nuzzle and cheer and charm and snore andslobber and eat the trash and chase the squirrels.
Somebody who would bring a family together with theselflessness of an open heart. Somebody who wouldbark and then pant and then reply with rapid wag of tailwhen their best friend says -- let's go for a ride in the car.So God made a dog.

October was Pit bull awareness month. On October 26th theLakeshore Humane Society held an educational event: a"Pittie Party" to celebrate the bully breed. This event aimed toeducate and foster positive communications with Pit bulls. Itwas a day to change perceptions and shatter stereotypes.
Guests joined us at the shelter from 11am-1pm forinformation on Pit bulls, to meet all of our wonderful Pittiesthat were available for adoption, had some cookies donatedby Hartman's Bakery, and had their photo taken with some ofour wonderful shelter dogs. Past adopters of Pitbulls attendedalso and brought their pitties along for a visit! We lovedseeing old faces and hearing the success stories of Pit bulls intheir forever homes. We also made some new friends thatday! Gemma, a therapy dog from Neenah made the drive tovisit us and see what we were all about!
There are currently around 25 adoptable Pit bull breeds atthe Lakeshore Humane Society. This event was free to thepublic, but as always, donations were greatly appreciated! We received around $100 worth of cash and in-kinddonations during the event.
