Today students were assessed on their skills and knowledge of Language Convenons and Wring. Tomorrow students will complete the reading component of NAPLAN with the final assessment on Thursday to focus on students’ Numeracy skills. Any children that are absent on these days will complete their tesng on Friday. These tests are beneficial in providing parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the me of the assessments. They also provide schools with informaon about how educaonal programs are working and which areas of the curriculum need to be priorised for improvement. Whilst NAPLAN is an important tool for us to assess how students are performing, these tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporng process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s skills and abilies. We wish our Year 3 and 5 students the best when sing NAPLAN over the next few days but remind them that there is no one way to ‘test’ all of the wonderful things that they are, that they do and that they have achieved at Wagga Wagga Public School. CROSS COUNTRY Our annual Cross Country was held last Friday at Lake Albert. The weather was on our side and students had a great day running and walking in the sun. It was lovely to hear that all students ‘had a go’ and parcipated enthusiascally to earn sporng points for their house. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents and friends that came along to watch and to those who assisted us on the day. BOOK FAIR Our Book Fair was another huge success this year and it was pleasing to see so many students excited about reading new books and eager to build up their collecons at home. The money that we collect from the sales of our Book Fair each year allows us to buy valuable resources for our school library. Thank you again to Mrs Allen for organising the Book Fair and to all of the parents and students who supported our sales.

NAPLAN -The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
NAPLAN assessments commenced today and will continue until Thursday. Today students were assessed on their skills and knowledge of Language Conventions and Writing. Tomorrow students will complete the reading component of NAPLAN with the final assessment on Thursday to focus on students’ Numeracy skills. Any children that are absent on these days will complete their testing on Friday.
These tests are beneficial in providing parents and schools with an understanding of
how individual students are performing at the time of the assessments. They also
provide schools with information about how educational programs are working and
which areas of the curriculum need to be prioritised for improvement.
Whilst NAPLAN is an important tool for us to assess how students are performing,
these tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and do
not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each
student’s skills and abilities.
We wish our Year 3 and 5 students the best when sitting NAPLAN over the next few
days but remind them that there is no one way to ‘test’ all of the wonderful things
that they are, that they do and that they have achieved at Wagga Wagga Public
School.
CROSS COUNTRY Our annual Cross Country was held last Friday at Lake Albert. The weather was on our side and students had a great day running and walking in the sun. It was lovely to hear that all students ‘had a go’ and participated enthusiastically to earn sporting points for their house. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents and friends that came along to watch and to those who assisted us on the day.
The P&C are delighted to welcome Shelbi Glanville to the team as acting co-ordinator. Shelbi holds a Certificate III in Children’s Services and has commenced her studies in the Diploma in Children’s Services in 2016. Shelbi has over 3 years’ experience in childcare in the Wagga Wagga area and is excited to join our centre. She also has family members who attend Wagga Wagga Public School and knows lots of parents at the school.
Shelbi will hold the role of acting Coordinator in the interim whilst we advertise externally for the two positions of Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator. We hope to have this process finalised by the end of May with an announcement of at least one, if not both of these roles in the first week in June.
Shelbi joins the team as we bid farewell to Alissa Wood. We thank Alissa for all of her work over the past 3 years and wish her well into the future. There are many families and students who will miss her.
Mothers’ Day Stall
Thank you to all of the families that supported the Mothers’ Day Stall that was held last week and raised $430 for the school. We trust that many mums, grandmothers, carers and friends were given a great day by the students of WWPS. Day 1 was so popular that we promptly ran out of stock and were only saved by the generosity of Mrs Elsley. I was personally in charge of the stock, so I apologise to all the children who had their eye on a heart shaped photo-frame/snow globe (and also to the mums that were desperately hoping for a wire head-scratcher – a popular choice for many kids I’ll remember to order many more next year). We re-stocked on Day 2 thanks to the initiative of Nicole Russell. The stall saw another wave of well-mannered and enthusiastic students, which left us with no option but to restock again for Friday (with thanks to Andrew Pidgeon). Beside the lesson of buying more stock up-front, I did learn that we, the parents, were superfluous to the whole process as the skills and initiative of Claire, Holly and Amelie, all of year 5, far exceeded any service we could offer.
School Fete
Last year the P&C undertook to match the funding of the government for the building of a COLA in the infants playground. Thanks to the wonderful result of the school fete that raised $19,000, we were able to meet our commitment by presenting the school with a cheque for $25,000. Along with the contribution to the infants playground, uniforms, the Crow magazine and gazebos, the P&C on behalf of the whole school community, has donated over $50,000 to the school in the last 9 months. This represents a great achievement by the school community and the hard working band of volunteers that untiringly organised a trivia night; sold aprons, cakes and sausages; assisted in the running of the canteen, BASC Centre and Uniform shop and all the families that supported them. Thank you for your continuing support.
