Orders from China to Taiwan Panel Makers

Taiwan panel makers are seeing a surge of new panel orders from China-based TV vendors for 60- and 65-inch units as the vendors expect to see sales for the two sizes increase during the October 1 holiday period due to price cuts.

During the holiday period vendors and retailers typically cut TV pricing and in recent years have increasingly done so for Ultra HD TVs and larger-size units. For 2014, consumers in China can expect to see pricing for 60- and 65-inch LCD and Ultra HD units decreased, and vendors are currently stocking up in anticipation for increased sales.

Industry sources noted that during the period the China vendors are expected to slash pricing enough to make up for LCD TV subisidies previosuly issued throughout mid-2012 into mid-2013 by the China government but later discontinued.

Market observers believe the subsidies were major contributing factors to the LCD TV growth in China over the one-year period and their discontinuation have led China's TV market to see limited growth.

The sources added that in response to such trends local vendors are using pricing strategies to spur growth in addition to focusing on large-size TV sales in order to maintain profits.

Taiwan panel makers are expected to receive most of the orders to meet Ultra HD TV panel demand in China during the holiday period and have dropped pricing for the panels to about 1.1 times that of Full HD units.

The sources also noted that Innolux has order visibility until the end of October while AU Optronics (AUO) has so until December due to demand for its curved Ultra HD TV panels.

China TV Panel Production

9

Page 10: W38September2014

TV panels produced in China during 2015 are expected to meet nearly 60% of LCD TV panel demand in the nation during the year as makers including CSOT, CEC Panda LCD Technology and BOE expand production capacity, and as Korea based makers bump up production in order to meet demand for LG Electronics, Samsung Electroics, and various local vendors, including Skyworth and Konka.

According to a new report from Ʃintell, Korea makers in particular are aiming to bump up production in China in order to save on tariff and management costs. The makers will also receive subsidies from the China government, and will use their production to supply not only parent companies with various LCD TV panel sizes, but local makers as well.

Samsung Display has 8.5G facilities in Suzhou that currently have a monthly production capacity of 80,000 substrates while LG Display has new 8.5G facilities in Guangzhou that have gone into production as of September 2014 with a monthly production capacity of 60,000 substrates that will expand to 120,000 units by the end of 2016. Panels produced on the facilities will include 42-, 49- and 55-inch Full HD TV panels.

The report added that going into 2015, China panel makers will also be putting new 8.5G facilities into operation, which will include production of LCD TV panels, and hence increase the self-sufficiency rate of panels produced in China to 58%, up from 40.8% in 2014. As of the second half of 2014, CSOT's 8.5G monthly production capacity will reach 140,000 units while BOE Hefei-based facilities will reach 60,000 substrates.

The report also said China panel makers will hold a 16.2% global share in large-size panel

production during the second half of 2014.

Ultra HD TV Panel Shipments

Ultra HD TVs are gaining traction in the market and industry observers estimate that China will help drive global shipments to more than 15 million units in 2014.

According to MIC, worldwide Ultra HD TV panel shipments are estimated to total around 17.23 million units in 2014, up 473.4% in comparison to 2013. Ultra HD TV panels will take up around 7.2% of total LCD TV panels shipped in 2014, up from 1.3% in 2013.

As for RGBW Ultra HD TV panels, those developed by Korea-based makers shipped mainly to China's LCD TV vendors in the second quarter of 2014. In 2014, MIC estimates that over one million RGBW Ultra HD TV panels will be shipped, to make up 8% of total Ultra HD TV panel shipments.

As the price gap between Full HD LCD TVs and Ultra HD models is closing, Ultra HD's penetration of the global LCD TV market is expected to rise from over 3% currently to 6-8% by the end of 2014, and global demand for Ultra HD TVs will reach 10 million units in second-half 2014, industry observers recently indicated.

Digitimes Research meanwhile said Ultra HD TV panel shipments are expected to reach 17.83 million units in 2014, up 475% on year.

The average Ultra HD TV panel size shipped in 2014 is expected to be 50.8-inch, while the average-size LCD TV panel is expected to be 39.8-inch.

Ultra HD TV panel shipments are expected to reach 72.5 million in 2017, with most 50-inch and above size TVs expected to be Ultra HD, said Digitimes Research.

Retail and Payment Market

Mobile Payment Regulation

The European Union Council of Ministers is preparing new regulations to govern mobile payments - just as the Apple iPhone 6 promises to make mobile payments and digital wallets take-off.

In a document promising a new "Payment Services Directive in the EU" the Council of Ministers' presidency recommended that the regulations should mandate "strong customer authentication" over a range of digital payment schemes, including "sensitive payment data to be used in a wallet solution".

According to Outlaw.com, the legal news and guidance service of law firm Pinsent Masons, third-party payment initiation service providers would need a licence to operate in the EU. It also set out a process by which payment initiation service providers and other payment institutions could obtain regulatory authorisation for operating across different EU countries.

Mobile Payment Market

Citi Investment Research analyst Mark May believes the sum total of mobile payments could grow from $1 billion in 2013 to $58.4 billion by 2017.

RFID Market

The global radiofrequency identification (RFID) market was valued at USD 1.9 billion in 2013 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.9% from 2014 to 2040, to reach an estimated value of USD 5.3 billion in 2020.

Energy Industry

Automotive Lighting Market

The global automotive lighting market size hits approximately USD26 billion (including USD21.2

14

Page 15: W38September2014

billion generated by OEM) in 2014, representing an increase of 8.8% over 2013. The growth of the OEM market is mainly driven by two factors:

First, the automobile shipment in China and the United States surges, especially the Chinese market has still maintained the growth rate of about 10% after the high-speed growth in 2013. Second, the extensive use of xenon lamps and LED raises the unit price.

In the global market, the second and third categories will seize 10% share each, while the fourth category 7% in 2016. However, unique Chinese consumers are keen on new technology and the luxury car sales volume growth rate is much higher than low-end models under the context of exacerbated wealth disparity, so the proportion of xenon lamps in China exceeds the global average level. The second category is expected to occupy about 13% share and the third category 14% in 2016.

Global Smart Demand Response Market

Global Smart Demand Response Market was valued at USD 5,041.4 million in 2013 and is expected to reach 51,478.9 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 21.6% from 2014 to 2025.
