COUNCILLOR’S MESSAGE

I want to start by thanking Ward 9 residents for their very generous

donations to the OC Transpo Food Bank event this past Saturday at Loblaws on Merivale Road. I saw many of you that morning and want to thank you for helping out in such a big way.

On Monday, I attended the Nepean Seniors Christmas Breakfast and attempted my singing skills along with the Nepean Songsters and the Mayor. It was a great turn out on a very snowy day.

Tuesday night, Kristen and I went to the wonderful Merivale High School Annual Multicultural Show. It was a great night of entertainment and food. A big thank you to the students and Takis Zervas for organizing the event.

On Thursday, I hosted the grade 5 class of Carleton Heights Elementary School. I toured the kids around City Hall and answered lots of questions. It was a fun day.

It has been a busy week of committee meetings at City Hall as we get close to the year end. I was present at both the Transit Commission meeting and Library Board meeting on Monday. There are big changes coming from Presto and here is a link to some FAQs you might have: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8NzhZgTq-xtMUUyWmw0SldFNnM/edit?usp=sharing.

On Wednesday, I attended Council and the meeting minutes can be viewed at the following link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8NzhZgTq-xtWW91d3Y0WHQxdU0/edit?usp=sharing. There was further discussion around the proposed consultation process. As reported in last week’s newsletter, I was able to advocate for some changes and/or enhancements to the process. For example, community association contact information will be part of the resources made available to anyone checking out the City’s website on consultation issues. Additionally, at my direction, staff prepared a detailed breakdown of resident feedback on the proposed process and the City’s response. It can be found at the following link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8NzhZgTq-xtamlSUl9mUnA1VE0/edit?usp=sharing.

I received a number of questions about a sign announcing the new location for Dow Honda at the corner of Merivale Road and Colonnade Road. No application has been received by the City to date to build anything. If and when this occurs, proper notice will be given and the community will have an opportunity to provide comments on the proposed development.

Finally, I hope to see many of you at the Ward 9 Holiday Drop-in at the Tanglewood Community Centre (30 Woodfield Drive) on Saturday, December 14th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be trats and fun for

the whole family, including an appearance by Santa.

Crime Prevention Tips for the Holiday Season

from the Ottawa Police Service With the holiday season upon us, the Ottawa Police Service

and your Community Police Centres would like to remind Ottawa residents of a few simple steps to ensure everyone has a safe holiday season whether you are doing last minute shopping, visiting friends or celebrating at home. 1. When shopping, make sure that you always lock your vehicle. 2. Place parcels in the trunk and/or minimize the number of bags that can be seen. 3. Keep track of your debit and credit cards. Always protect your PIN number. 4. Take note of where you parked and the door you entered from, so when you leave, you are not walking around with a large number of parcels and attracting unnecessary attention. 5. On garbage day, do not throw out your “Big Ticket” boxes all at once. Cut the boxes up and fold them inside out to hide the original content pictures. 6. If away, ask that someone clean your driveway & walkway to give an appearance of occupancy. 7. Leave lights on a timer and have a neighbour/friend check your house daily. Ottawa Police Service members and your community police officers wish you a safe and happy holiday season. Drive safely and don’t drink and drive.

3rd Annual Volunteer Recognition Awards Recipient Profile

As members of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa, the Giovanopoulos family are longstanding volunteers at the Ottawa Greek Summer Festival in the Beverage Tent, organized and coordinated by Sotiris. Bessie has been an organizer for The Ottawa Gold Plate Dinner for over 25 years (this is also where Bessie and Sotiris first met!). Additionally, Bessie has been a dedicated parent council member for over 15 years while Sotiris is a longstanding volunteer coach and club representative with the Nepean City Soccer Club. The Giovanopoulos family have been active volunteers with The Ottawa Fusion Volleyball Club and are proud of their daughter Haroula’s accomplishment of becoming a Ryerson Ram on the Women’s University Volleyball team. Winter Overnight Parking Restrictions will be in effect

from November 15th, 2013 until April 1st, 2014 The City of Ottawa is reminding residents that winter overnight parking restrictions are in effect beginning Friday, November 15

th.

These restrictions ensure that the City’s snow-clearing crews are able to keep Ottawa’s roads safe and clear for pedestrians, cyclists, public transit, and motorists. Between November 15

th and April 1

st, when 7 cm or more of

snowfall is forecasted by Environment Canada, overnight parking restrictions go into effect. These restrictions are automatically enacted, unless the City of Ottawa’s General Manager of Public Works issues an exemption. The City of Ottawa will announce parking restrictions and inform residents if there is an exemption through www.ottawa.ca and the City’s Twitter account @ottawacity. When restrictions are put into place, parking will not be permitted on Ottawa streets between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Vehicles parked on the street when a restriction is in effect will be ticketed. Vehicle owners who have a municipal on-street parking permit are exempt from winter overnight parking restrictions. Technical briefing A technical briefing has taken place on Friday, November 22

nd at

Ottawa City Hall which provided an update on current construction projects and their traffic impacts during the winter months.

The City’s winter operations for 2013-14 season was also outlined at the briefing. Be in the know about snow Sign up to receive e-mail or Twitter notifications of overnight parking restrictions at www.ottawa.ca. After you sign up, you will receive an e-mail or Twitter alert via @ottawacity, every time a winter overnight parking restriction goes into effect or is lifted. The service is free and you can unsubscribe at anytime. You can also find out if an overnight parking restriction is in effect by calling 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401) or through local media. When day-time or night-time snow removal operations are planned, temporary "no parking" snow removal signs will be posted before snow removal begins. Vehicle owners are reminded not to park on streets where temporary "no parking" snow removal signs are placed. Vehicles parked during planned snow removal will be ticketed and towed to a nearby street. This restriction applies to all vehicles, including those with on-street parking permits. Your safety is the City of Ottawa’s top priority. For more information on winter overnight parking regulations, visit www.ottawa.ca, or call 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401).
