Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. PROCESSIONAL HYMN ADVENT PROCESSIONAL arr. by R. Proulx Creator of the stars of night, your people's everlasting light, O Christ, Redeemer of us all, we pray you hear us when we call. In sorrow that the ancient curse should doom to death a universe, you came, O Savior, to set free your own in glorious liberty. When this old world drew on toward night, you came; but not in splendor bright, not as a monarch, but the child of Mary, blameless mother mild.

At your great Name, O Jesus, now all knees must bend, all hearts must bow; all things on earth with one accord, like those in heaven, shall call you Lord. Come in your holy might, we pray, redeem us for eternal day; defend us while we dwell below from all assaults of our dread foe. To God Creator, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One, praise, honor, might, and glory be from age to age eternally.

OPENING ACCLAMATION Presider Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. People Glory to God for ever and ever.

THE COLLECT FOR PURITY Presider and People

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 24:36-44

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON The Rev. Martin Elfert A time of silence for reflection follows.

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

FRACTION ANTHEM

MINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENT Share the gifts If you know the brokenness of life, then you have participated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desire to know the love of God that overcomes apathy, alienation, and despair, then you are invited to share in the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the common cup. If you wish the chalice bearer to dip the bread into the wine, please hold the bread before you. If you prefer to receive a blessing, please cross your arms over your chest.

The bread is gluten-free and vegan at the 10:00 am service. Grape juice is available by request. Prayer and Laying On of Hands for Healing If you wish a particular prayer for yourself or for someone else, you are invited to go to the prayer station located to the right of the altar. Give your first name and share your prayer need, and the prayer team will quietly offer prayers. Anything you share is confidential.

The Vestry is the Board of Directors for Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. Our community elects each Vestry member for a three-year term. We replace one-third of the 12-person Vestry each year (plus any vacancies from previous years). It is our practice at Grace for the current Vestry to recommend a slate of candidates to the wider Grace membership. We then vote on that slate at the Annual General Meeting. This year's meeting is on Sunday, January 26th, right after the 10am service.

A nominee for Vestry will: • Have a strong commitment to Jesus Christ and to carrying out Jesus’ ministry in our community; • Be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit; • Be a communicant in good standing, regular in prayer and worship; • Be active in the life of the parish and willing to assume leadership positions; • Be a pledging member of record who is tithing or whose pledge gives serious indication of working

towards a tithe; • Attend Vestry meetings (held on the third Tuesday of the month from 6-7.30pm) as well as occasional

retreats and other meetings; • Have the ability and willingness to serve Grace Memorial.

This year at the Annual meeting, we will be electing as many as five Vestry members, four for a three-year term and one for a 2-year term.

Vestry is an opportunity to do meaningful work to help this beloved community to thrive. Please speak to Louise Tippens or a current Vestry member if you think you may be called to this ministry.

The criteria for representing Grace at the 2020 Diocesan Convention and the process for electing them are identical, except that the commitment of time is shorter. Convention Representatives attend several preparatory meetings and then convention itself. Representatives typically pay for the cost of their own attendance, although scholarships are available to those for whom this cost would be a burden. We need four representatives to convention. Again, please speak to Louise Tippens or a current Vestry member if you think you may be called to this ministry.

In thanksgiving for your ministry at Grace, The Vestry and Convention Nominating Team, Louise Tippens, Connie Sullivan, Daniel Jones, Charles McGee, and Martin Elfert

Parishioners are invited to join us for a weekend of fun, festivities and reflection at Camp Magruder. This is an experience for all ages. Go to http://www.campmagruder.org/ to see what Camp Magruder has to offer. Take part in the spirited community gatherings.
