Welcome to our new Autumn brochure

We are offering an exciting and varied programme this season. The programme is packed full of our usual comedy, music, films and NT live theatre and opera screenings but we have also included some new events and activities for you to enjoy. We will be holding our second Drive-In cinema event at Hallowe’en and, following our first successful Baby Rave, a follow-up event will be taking place in November. We are delighted that visitors of all ages have been enjoying our new café and Soft Play area in the foyer and we are looking forward to our second Comedy with Cake event in the café with Mrs Barbara Nice.

We will be opening a Birmingham Repertory Theatre youth theatre company for 14-18 year olds here at Artrix and we will be running our own new Dramatic Writing Course. We are very excited to welcome our new resident performance company to Artrix, Outspoken, a company of emerging artists making work with and for young people and children.

Many thanks to everyone who donated to our 10th Birthday appeal. You helped us raised an amazing £13,133.65 which has been put towards replacing some much needed equipment and supporting our family theatre programme. Thank you also to those of you who have donated to our Next Decade appeal in support of our projects with young people.

THE DEEP BLUE SEA (12A)

Encore screening

Helen McCrory returns to the National Theatre in Terence Rattigan’s devastating masterpiece, playing one of the greatest female roles in contemporary drama. When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge. With it comes a portrait of need, loneliness and long-repressed passion. Behind the fragile veneer of post-war civility burns a brutal sense of loss and longing.

ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING (18) A unique cinema event directed by Andrew Dominik, One More Time With Feeling will be the first ever opportunity anyone will have to hear Skeleton Tree, the sixteenth studio album from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Originally a performance based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s narration and improvised rumination.

MITCH BENN presents DON’T BELIEVE A WORD“I’m a skeptic. But don’t take my word for it. Or indeed anybody’s. For anything…”. And this is the basic premise of Mitch’s new critically acclaimed show. It’s a show that will make you laugh a lot and think a bit as well as Mitch debunks myths, exposes nonsense and grapples with the very nature of knowledge itself extolling the virtues of an evidence-based approach to life… with amusing consequences and of course a few songs along the way.

LUCY BRETTLucy Brett joined the BBFC as an Examiner in 2004 and became Education Officer in 2010, before being appointed Head of Education in 2012. As Head of Education she represents the BBFC at events like the Hay Literary Festival and the Cambridgeshire Young People’s Film Festival. TURANDOT (12A)

Encore screening

Turandot is a beautiful and powerful princess, who challenges her many suitors to answer three riddles on pain of death. No one has ever succeeded. Caláf is a brave prince from a foreign land, who falls instantly in love with the princess. Despite the wishes of his exiled father and the pleas of a slave-girl who loves him, he rings the gong and declares his love for the princess. She presents her riddles, and in triumph, the unknown prince answers. Turandot despairs and the prince takes pity - offering the ice-cold princess a riddle of his own. But Caláf’s riddle risks more than his own life - everyone else’s hangs in the balance.

LYNCHEDLynched are a four-piece traditional folk group from Dublin, Ireland, who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material. Cold Old Fire was recorded in August 2013, and although fundamentally an album of traditional Irish song, subtle traces of the group’s collective influences can be detected, from American old-timey music, ambient techno and psychedelic folk, to black metal, punk and rock n’ roll.

A darkly comic new take on Brecht and Weill’s raucous musical broadcast live from the stage of the National Theatre. London scrubs up for the coronation. The thieves are on the make, the whores on the pull, the police cutting deals to keep it all out of sight. Contains scenes of a sexual nature, violence and filthy language.

HEIDI TALBOTHeidi Talbot was born in Ireland and became a folk star in the USA as a member of the Irish American band Cherish the Ladies. She now lives in Scotland, where she is married to the celebrated fiddler and multi-instrumentalist John McCusker. With a background like that, it’s hardly surprising she should develop a style that switches easily between Celtic and Americana, but subtlety is Talbot’s magic ingredient. Heidi Talbot’s fifth solo LP plays to the tune of quiet skips and giant leaps. It crosses the ages, jumps into the unknown, traverses oceans and musical styles – from folk, through Americana, to classic pop, and back again.

Never easy for a girl to fit in if she is sporting a massive comb over while harbouring secret desires for Charlie’s Angels (The blonde one mostly, but with a comb over, who can afford to be fussy?). Armed with ready wit, raucous vibes and a shed load of grin-inducing great songs, there are few musicians able to connect with their audience on such an immediate and warm level.
