Absorption of Iron

According to laboratory studies using iron

marked with radioactive isotopes, part

of the iron is hydrolyzed upon entering

the intestinal wall and part is absorbed

unchanged by the mucosa cells in the

jejunum. Inside the intestinal wall, the

chelate is effi ciently hydrolyzed and used

in a similar way to inorganic iron salts.

Regulation is the same as for iron from

other inorganic sources, so that body iron

reserves regulate the absorption. In other

words, depending how much iron the body

needs determines how much it will absorb.

The limiting step in absorption is passing

through the membrane of the intestinal

wall, which is more effective for the iron

amino acid chelate, than for any other type of iron known to date.
