1 WAUKESHA SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL VOL. 381 NO. 8 May 2018 Dear Waukesha South Families, We have entered our final full month of the school year. I simply cannot believe it! We have experienced a tremendous amount of growth from our students, our staff, and our school culture. I have been honored to accept the privilege of being the principal of Waukesha South High School. As many of you know, I taught here and being in a leadership position in the school that I love has given me a sense of purpose and drive that will continue to encourage me as we move into future years. I have stated this in multiple arenas, but want to continue to reiterate that I always appreciate hearing from families. Feedback and suggestions are always welcome. We want to consciously be moving in a positive direction and, with family feedback, we are able to better assess what our next steps should be. We are in the thick of AP testing. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of our students and our staff in the preparation to ensure that those who elect to take these important tests are able to do so with all needed preparation. These courses emphasize the rigor and necessary critical thinking skills that are needed beyond high school. We appreciate the intense effort expended during this testing timeline. We wish all students taking AP tests the best of luck. Finals week and graduation are fast approaching! Additional information on both are available within the Spotlight. Moving?

Moving out of district? Please contact Mrs. Blackburn in the Guidance Office at 970-3731 so that school records can be mailed to the new school.

Staying in the district but moving to a new address? Please contact the enrollment office at the Lindholm building, 222 Maple Ave.

Schedule Changes for ALL Students

Students who have failed or are likely to fail a required class during the year must contact their counselor to make the necessary schedule change for the next year. Students will either need to register for summer school or be sure that the class is in their schedule for next year. Placement in classes that students have failed is not always possible due to large class sizes. This is particularly critical for “to-be” seniors! Also, if a student has registered for a class requiring a prerequisite and has failed the prerequisite class, the student’s schedule will need to be changed. The sooner the student makes the change, the better the chance to get an alternate class choice. Please email your counselor with all scheduling needs.

It is the student's responsibility to make an appointment with his/her school counselor to make sure that all of the necessary classes are in place to graduate. It is encouraged that students “track your progress from year to year.” School counselors are available on a limited basis immediately at the end of the school year and two weeks before classes begin in the fall. The school counselors DO NOT work at South throughout the summer months. Any schedule changes for the 2017-2018 school year should be made before the students leave for the summer.

Caps and Gowns for Graduation

Seniors if you could not afford

a cap and gown to participate

in graduation ceremonies,

please see your guidance

counselor to help you out.

If you have no interest in

keeping your graduation cap or

gown, please feel free to bring it to the Guidance

Office. We will be happy to find a student in need so

they can participate in South’s graduation ceremony.

Guaranteed Transfer Program

Students can begin their education as a freshman at the UW Colleges and be “guaranteed” admission to another UW System institution as a junior by participating in the UW Colleges Guaranteed Transfer Program. After fulfilling certain credit and grade point average requirements, students will transfer with the same rights and privileges as those who begin their education at the baccalaureate institutions. Free SAT Prep

If you are planning on taking the SAT, there is a free program that you can access online. It incorporates a catalog of over 100 math, reading, and writing study guides, 5000 SAT vocabulary flash cards, and SAT practice tests. Check it out at http://domesatreview.com

Transcripts Online (Parchment)

Students can use parchment.com to request high school transcripts. Follow the prompts to set up an account. The current cost of using Parchment is $3.50, and a credit card is required. It takes about 3-4 business days for the college or university to receive your transcripts.

If you prefer a paper copy to be sent out, the cost is $5.00. See any secretary in the guidance office.

Important Senior Information

A mandatory graduation rehearsal will be held June 1. You MUST attend your 2nd hour class. The senior picture will be at the

END of the practice.

Be sure any outstanding fees are paid BEFORE graduation. You should have received a notice in the mail. You can pay your

check made out to the School District of Waukesha anytime before May 11th, but anytime after that date, it needs to be cash or

money order. If fees are not paid, you will NOT be able to participate in the ceremony.

If you didn’t order a cap and gown for graduation due to monetary reasons, but would like to participate in the ceremony,

All South Parents-HELP!!!

Volunteer & Donation Spots Are Still Open!!

We are sending out this final plea to ALL South parents because Project Graduation is a

"pay it forward" type of celebration. All students will eventually have the opportunity to

enjoy this amazing event when they reach graduation. Underclassmen parent volunteers

afford senior parents the time to enjoy family and friends who attend graduation. Our

graduates arrive at 9pm the night of graduation, June 9, 2018 and stay until 5:00am the

next morning. Our event is held yearly thanks to the help of our parent volunteers and

parent donors from ALL grade levels. The event is filled with activities which include:

music, entertainment, sports, inflatable fun, a casino, bingo games, carnival games,

swimming, raffle prizes, a Game Show with BIG prizes, a Hypnotist, and so much more. To

ensure this event succeeds and continues at South, we need your help. The more volunteers

and donations we have, the more our graduates benefit each year. Please consider helping

us with your time, talent, material &/or monetary donations. Please take a peek below and

consider making Project Graduation even more special for the Class of 2018 & beyond!

Please either click on our Sign-Up Genius links to sign up, email me your form, or

traditionally goes toward a Class gift left to South.

before May 18th! PLUS….We need parent helpers!!!! Here’s to us Class of 2018!

What You Need to Know about the PSAT

PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It is the best indicator of how

well you will perform on the SAT. The SAT is a college admissions test similar to the ACT. If your child is planning

on taking the ACT, you may decide not to take the PSAT. TYPICALLY, THIS IS A JUNIOR LEVEL TEST ONLY

JUNIORS WHO TAKE IT WILL BE ENTERED IN THE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION.

Who should take the test?

PRIMARILY JUNIORS should take the PSAT/NMSQT. All students are allowed to take it, but only juniors can take

the test to enter into competitions for the scholarship programs conducted by NMSC and to prepare for the SAT. If

you are a sophomore taking high level classes and a challenging course load, you may want to take the test to

receive personalized feedback on academic skills relating to college success. Taking the test during your sophomore

year will give you more time to work on problem areas (if need be) before you start applying to colleges. This

competition is VERY competitive. If your child does not do well on standardized tests, it may not be in

her/his best interest to take this test. We would not advise that special education students take this

test if they have a specific learning disability in the area of reading, math, or processing. It may be very

frustrating to take.

What is on the PSAT/NMSQT?

The test consists of five sections: two 25-minute critical reading sections, two 25-minute math sections, and one 30-

minute writing skills section. The critical reading sections measure your knowledge of the meanings of words and

sentence structure and measure your ability to read and think

carefully about reading passages. The math sections measure

your knowledge of numbers and operations; algebra and

functions; geometry and measurement; and data analysis,

statistics, and probability. The writing skills section measures

your capability to communicate ideas clearly, to recognize

errors in usage and structure, and to use language with

sensitivity to meaning.

Will colleges use my PSAT scores in determining whether

or not I am admitted?

Colleges rarely see your PSAT/NMSQT scores, and the scores

are not used to influence decisions on college admission. Try

not to worry about the PSAT/NMSQT, but instead, use it as a

tool to help gauge what you need to improve upon for the SAT.

When should I take the test?

The PSAT/NMSQT is administered by high schools each October. You must sign up for the test at your high school or

a high school in your community. Contact your high school counselor for information on registering for the PSAT/

NMSQT and learning the correct date, time, and location that your school will give the test.

Is a fee required to take the test?

There is a $16 fee for the PSAT/NMSQT. There are a limited number of fee waivers available to juniors from low-

income families who can't afford the test fee. Contact your high school counselor for more information on the test

fee amount and fee waivers.

If you plan to take the PSAT/NMSQT, be sure to pick up the Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT

from your guidance office in mid-September. For more information on the PSAT/NMSQT, please visit

www.collegeboard.com

Why do I need to take the PSAT/NMSQT?

Reasons to take the PSAT/NMSQT include:

To get feedback on your strengths and weak-

nesses of scholastic skills.

To enter the competition for scholarships from

the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

To prepare for the SAT.

To receive information from colleges by checking

"yes" to Student Search Service.

PSAT SIGN-UP INFORMATION

Sign-up procedure (remember, this is typically a junior level test):

Sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT test (Preliminary SAT®/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) by logging into your

Infinite Campus Fees and selecting the PSAT. The sign-up window runs from July 1 - September 7, 2018. This is the

final day to sign-up as tests must be ordered and there are strict ordering deadlines. There will be NO REFUNDS

issued once the test has been paid for.

The standardized test provides firsthand practice for the SAT, which is similar to the ACT and used by many colleges

and universities for admissions. It also automatically enters you in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC)

scholarship programs.

Great reasons for taking the PSAT are to see how student performance on an admissions test might compare with that

of others applying to college and to enter the competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship

Corporation as well as helping to prepare for the SAT by experiencing the kinds of questions that are on the SAT. The

only way to enter the competition is to take the PSAT in October as a junior!

This test will be offered here at South High School on

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 and costs $16. The test will begin at 8:00 a.m. in South’s library.

See Mrs. Paulson if you have questions or e-mail at [email protected]

The deadline for signing up is

Friday, September 7, 2018

Email address (optional). Students can opt to receive information

about educational opportunities and financial aid via email from colleges,
