1 WAUKESHA SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL VOL. 381 NO. 8 May 2018 Dear Waukesha South Families, We have entered our final full month of the school year. I simply cannot believe it! We have experienced a tremendous amount of growth from our students, our staff, and our school culture. I have been honored to accept the privilege of being the principal of Waukesha South High School. As many of you know, I taught here and being in a leadership position in the school that I love has given me a sense of purpose and drive that will continue to encourage me as we move into future years. I have stated this in multiple arenas, but want to continue to reiterate that I always appreciate hearing from families. Feedback and suggestions are always welcome. We want to consciously be moving in a positive direction and, with family feedback, we are able to better assess what our next steps should be. We are in the thick of AP testing. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of our students and our staff in the preparation to ensure that those who elect to take these important tests are able to do so with all needed preparation. These courses emphasize the rigor and necessary critical thinking skills that are needed beyond high school. We appreciate the intense effort expended during this testing timeline. We wish all students taking AP tests the best of luck. Finals week and graduation are fast approaching! Additional information on both are available within the Spotlight. If there are any questions, please feel free to reach out to us. Go Blackshirts! Ryan Galante Principal Learning, Growing, Succeeding Every Person, Every Day

Summer School is at Waukesha South this summer. It begins June 18 and runs through July 20.
There are 2 sessions: 7:30—10:00 a.m. and 10:10 a.m.—12:40 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will
be provided at NO CHARGE to ALL children 18 or under. See your counselor to register.
Moving out of district? Please contact Mrs. Blackburn in the Guidance Office at 970-3731 so that school records can be mailed to the new school.
Staying in the district but moving to a new address? Please contact the enrollment office at the Lindholm building, 222 Maple Ave.
Schedule Changes for ALL Students
Students who have failed or are likely to fail a required class during the year must contact their counselor to make the necessary schedule change for the next year. Students will either need to register for summer school or be sure that the class is in their schedule for next year. Placement in classes that students have failed is not always possible due to large class sizes. This is particularly critical for “to-be” seniors! Also, if a student has registered for a class requiring a prerequisite and has failed the prerequisite class, the student’s schedule will need to be changed. The sooner the student makes the change, the better the chance to get an alternate class choice. Please email your counselor with all scheduling needs.
It is the student's responsibility to make an appointment with his/her school counselor to make sure that all of the necessary classes are in place to graduate. It is encouraged that students “track your progress from year to year.” School counselors are available on a limited basis immediately at the end of the school year and two weeks before classes begin in the fall. The school counselors DO NOT work at South throughout the summer months. Any schedule changes for the 2017-2018 school year should be made before the students leave for the summer.
Caps and Gowns for Graduation
Seniors if you could not afford
a cap and gown to participate
in graduation ceremonies,
please see your guidance
counselor to help you out.
If you have no interest in
keeping your graduation cap or
gown, please feel free to bring it to the Guidance
Office. We will be happy to find a student in need so
they can participate in South’s graduation ceremony.
Guaranteed Transfer Program
Students can begin their education as a freshman at the UW Colleges and be “guaranteed” admission to another UW System institution as a junior by participating in the UW Colleges Guaranteed Transfer Program. After fulfilling certain credit and grade point average requirements, students will transfer with the same rights and privileges as those who begin their education at the baccalaureate institutions. Free SAT Prep
If you are planning on taking the SAT, there is a free program that you can access online. It incorporates a catalog of over 100 math, reading, and writing study guides, 5000 SAT vocabulary flash cards, and SAT practice tests. Check it out at http://domesatreview.com
Transcripts Online (Parchment)
Students can use parchment.com to request high school transcripts. Follow the prompts to set up an account. The current cost of using Parchment is $3.50, and a credit card is required. It takes about 3-4 business days for the college or university to receive your transcripts.
If you prefer a paper copy to be sent out, the cost is $5.00. See any secretary in the guidance office.

Important Senior Information
A mandatory graduation rehearsal will be held June 1. You MUST attend your 2nd hour class. The senior picture will be at the
END of the practice.
You will need to send a FINAL transcript to your intended college/university. These will be available by the end of June or the
first week in July. You may order on-line at www.parchment.com or they can be mailed if you pick up a form in the Guidance
Office and return it with the $5 fee no later than Friday, June 8 to any guidance secretary.
Be sure any outstanding fees are paid BEFORE graduation. You should have received a notice in the mail. You can pay your
fees through Infinite Campus but if you want to pay for them in person , you can do that with Mrs. Matson. She can accept a
check made out to the School District of Waukesha anytime before May 11th, but anytime after that date, it needs to be cash or
money order. If fees are not paid, you will NOT be able to participate in the ceremony.
If you didn’t order a cap and gown for graduation due to monetary reasons, but would like to participate in the ceremony,
PLEASE see your school counselor. We have caps and gowns that can be used for the day. You may purchase a tassel online at
jostens.com. If you didn’t order a cap and gown or if there were any errors in your order, please see Mrs. Blackburn in the
Guidance Office.
If detentions or Monday extended detentions are not made up BEFORE graduation, you will NOT be able to walk in the
ceremony. PLEASE see your administrator if you have questions about this or time owed!

Identify scholarships that you would qualify for as a senior. Make note of deadlines for next year and
compose your personal statement and begin the prep work for these now so that you will be prepared to
start the scholarship hunt during your senior year.
Plan on site college visits for this spring and this summer, so come fall 2018, your college choices will be
determined and you will be prepared to begin the college application process.
Congratulations to our Badger State Boys and Badger State Girls
Representatives!
Michael Heck and Mohamed Sudheer were selected to represent South at Ripon
College this summer.
Badger Boys State are week-long programs that emphasize American citizenship and
government. We here at South are very proud of their achievements! Congratulations!
All South Parents-HELP!!!
Volunteer & Donation Spots Are Still Open!!
We are sending out this final plea to ALL South parents because Project Graduation is a
"pay it forward" type of celebration. All students will eventually have the opportunity to
enjoy this amazing event when they reach graduation. Underclassmen parent volunteers
afford senior parents the time to enjoy family and friends who attend graduation. Our
graduates arrive at 9pm the night of graduation, June 9, 2018 and stay until 5:00am the
next morning. Our event is held yearly thanks to the help of our parent volunteers and
parent donors from ALL grade levels. The event is filled with activities which include:
A long-standing tradition at South has been to have a Senior Picnic after graduation practice. This gives us time to eat, hang out, and sign yearbooks. In order to
make this possible, we ALL need to pitch in. The money collected will go toward our picnic and anything leftover
traditionally goes toward a Class gift left to South.
Please turn in the bottom portion of this form with $5 to Mrs. Miller in the Activities Office as soon as possible and
before May 18th! PLUS….We need parent helpers!!!! Here’s to us Class of 2018!
Questions? Ask Sifi or Grace
If our classmates don’t pitch in and parents can’t help, there will be no picnic!
