ISKCON,Bangalore Page1Amitasana Dasa Respected Srila Prabhupada, Please accept my humble obeisance at your lotus feet. Srila Prabhupada, last year has been very eventful for us. We have been systematically streamlining your organization with disciplined and focused meetings. Please empower all of us to build a strong and powerful organization to effectively and efficiently spread the mission of Lord Chaitanya. Although we may be empowered by you to achieve big preaching goals, and instrumental in building big projects, let us always remain humble and remember the true source of all our abilities and power. Arjuna mentions to Yudhisthira Maharaja: I have the very same Gandiva bow, the same arrows, the same chariot drawn by the same horses, and I use them as the same Arjuna to whom all the kings offered their due respects. But in the absence of Lord Krishna, all of them, at a moments notice, have become null and void. - REF. SB 1.15.21 You have so mercifully given us, what we should pray and aspire for: Simply our prayer should be, my dear Krishna, please remind me to always chant Your holy name, please do not put me into forgetfulness. You are sitting within me as Supersoul, so You can put me into forgetfulness or into remembering You. So please do not put me into forgetfulness. Please always remind me to chant Hare Krishna. While we are enthusiastically building the organization, let us not forget our first duty, which you have mentioned in the following quote: If one remembers his first duty - keeping in constant contact with the Supreme Personality of Godhead - everything will be successful. - REF. SB 4.24.72 Please bless all of us to serve this great mission of yours, enthusiastically. Empower us to take this Movement to unparalleled heights, for your pleasure. Please allow me to remain your servant eternally. Amitasana Dasa, Vice President, ISKCON Bangalore Chanchalapathi Dasa Becoming Sensitive to the Spiritual Masters Instructions Dear Srila Prabhupada, Please accept my prostrated obeisance. All glories to your divine grace. I wish to present this homage in the form of remembrance of your instructions in the context of what is happening in ISKCON today. Fact 1: Secret of success in spiritual life is to serve the instructions of the spiritual master as ones life and soul and never deviate: VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page2Srila Prabhupada has mercifully revealed the secret of success in spiritual life: The secret of success in spiritual life is in satisfying the spiritual master and thereby getting his sincere blessings... It is essential, therefore, that a disciple be very much obedient and submissive to the bona fide spiritual master. (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.1.8 Purport) In various lectures, correspondences, the daily practices that Srila Prabhupada instituted in ISKCON, his own lifes example he has emphasized this principle. For instance, once in Philadelphia after the Bhagavatam class, he mentioned: Guru-mukha-padma-vkya, cittete koriy aikya. Now citta means consciousness or heart. "I shall do this only, bas. My Guru Mahrja told me; I shall do this." Cittete koriy aikya, r n koriho mane . So it is not my pride, but I can say, for your instruction, I did it. Therefore whatever little success you see than all my Godbrothers, it is due to this. I have no capacity, but I took it, the words of my guru, as life and soul. So this is fact. Guru-mukha-padma-vkya, cittete koriy aikya. Everyone should do that. But if he makes addition, alteration, then he is finished. No addition, alteration. You have to approach guruguru means the faithful servant of God, Kaand take his word how to serve Him. Then you are successful. If you concoct, "I am very intelligent than my guru, and I can make addition or alteration," then you are finished. (Srila Prabhupada lecture, July 12th, 1975, Philadelphia) Fact 2: Authorization is essential to become Spiritual Master: You have stated in the purport of the Srimad Bhagavatam: One should take initiation from a bona fide spiritual master coming in the disciplic succession, who is authorized by his predecessor spiritual master. This is called dk-vidhna. (rmad-Bhgavatam 4.8.54) Not only did Srila Prabhupada state this in the purport, you mentioned this during a conversation with an Indian gentleman in Nairobi: Indian man: When did you become the spiritual leader of Ka consciousness? Prabhupda: When my Guru Mahrja ordered me. This is the guru-parampar. Indian: Did it... Prabhupda: Try to understand. Dont go very speedily. A guru can become guru when hes ordered by his guru. Thats all. Otherwise nobody can become guru. (Bg class Oct 28th, 1975 Nairobi) During the Bhagavatam lecture in Mayapur in 1977, Srila Prabhupada stated this principle even more forcefully: Guru cannot be self-made. No. There is no such single instance throughout the whole Vedic literature. And nowadays, so many rascals, they are becoming guru without any authority. That is not guru. You must be authorized. Eva parampar-prptam ima r... [Bg. 4.2]. As soon as the parampar is lost, sa klena yoga nao parantapa, immediately finished. The spiritual potency finished. You can dress like a guru, you can talk big, big words, but it will never be effective. (Srimad Bhagavatam class, Mayapur, Feb 27th, 1977) Fact 3: Srila Prabhupada did not authorize or appoint any of his disciples to become Spiritual Master or Diksha Guru after his disappearance: VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page3It is a well established historical fact that Srila Prabhupada did not appoint any one to become an Acharya or Spiritual Master after his disappearance from the material world. Srila Prabhupadas personal secretary, HH Tamal Krishna Goswami has stated: Actually Prabhupada never appointed any gurus. He appointed eleven ritviks. He never appointed them gurus. Myself and the other GBC have done the greatest disservice to this movement the last three years because we interpreted the appointment of ritviks as the appointment of gurus. HH Tamala Krishna Goswami, (Personal Secretary to Srila Prabhupada during the last days in Vrindavan; excerpts from Pyramid House Confessions, Dec 3rd, 1980) The GBCs have admitted in various forums that Srila Prabhupada did not appoint Gurus to succeed him. Like in this excerpt from a debate on this issue, HG Ravindra Svarupa Dasa says: And its a fact that Srila Prabhupada never said, Alright here is the next Acharya, or here is the next Acharya and they are authorized gurus for the Movement, for the world. He did not do that. (Ravindra Svarupa Das, San Deigo debate, 1990) HH Bhakticharu Swami, a personal servant of Srila Prabhupada during his last days in Vrindavana, further testifies and elaborates the circumstances during that period: During the last days of Srila Prabhupadas physical presence in 1977 in Vrindavana, there was a lot of pressure on Srila Prabhupada to appoint the successor gurus. Once after the devotees had left Srila Prabhupadas room, he turned to me and said in Bengali, My Guru Maharaja did not appoint an Acharya. They expect me to appoint one! It is well established that there was pressure on Srila Prabhupada to appoint the next Acharya from the disciples and Srila Prabhupada did not want to appoint one. How can someone be insensitive to these facts? How can someone not be sensitive to these wishes of Srila Prabhupada? Fact 4: Srila Prabhupada describes the history of Gaudiya Mutt and analyzes the causes of its decline to be deviating from the spiritual masters instruction on successor acharya. Srila Prabhupada recounted the history of the Gaudiya Mutt and the last days before the disappearance of Srila Bhakti Siddantha Saraswathi Thakura. In one of the letters Srila Prabhupada wrote: Still he requested his disciples to form a strong Governing body for preaching the cult of Caitanya Mahprabhu. He never recommended anyone to be crya of the Gaudiya Math. But Sridhara Mahrja is responsible for disobeying this order of Guru Mahrja, and he and others who are already dead unnecessarily thought that there must be one crya. If Guru Mahrja could have seen someone who was qualified at that time to be crya he would have mentioned. Because on the night before he passed away he talked of so many things, but never mentioned an crya. His idea was crya was not to be nominated amongst the governing body. He said openly you make a GBC and conduct the mission. So his idea was amongst the members of GBC who would come out successful and self effulgent crya would be automatically selected. So Sridhara Mahrja and his two associate gentlemen unauthorizedly selected one crya and later it proved a failure. The result is now everyone is claiming to be crya even though they may be kanistha adhikr with no ability to preach. In some of the camps the crya is being changed three times a year. Therefore we may not commit the same mistake in our ISKCON camp. (Srila Prabhupada letter to Rupanuga, April 28, 1974) VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page4Srila Prabhupada explains that Srila Bhakti Siddantha Saraswathi Thakura also did not appoint any of his disciples as a Spiritual Master. Srila Prabhupada also says that this was not an inadvertent slip but a consciously meditated plan on the part of Srila Bhakti Siddantha Saraswathi Thakura to not to appoint any of his disciples as the next Spiritual Master or Acharya. Srila Prabhupada describes the happenings in Gaudiya Mutt once in the purport of Chaitanya Charitamrita: Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura, at the time of his departure, requested all his disciples to form a governing body and conduct missionary activities cooperatively. He did not instruct a particular man to become the next crya. But just after his passing away, his leading secretaries made plans, without authority, to occupy the post of crya, and they split into two factions over who the next crya would be. Consequently, both factions were asra, or useless, because they had no authority, having disobeyed the order of the spiritual master. (Chaitanya Charitamrita, Adi 12.8 purport) In yet another room conversation in 1976, Srila Prabhupada analyzes why the Gaudiya Mutt failed and links to disobedience to the order of the spiritual master with regard to successor Acharya: Why this Gauya Maha failed? Because they tried to become more than guru. He, before passing away, he gave all direction and never said that This man should be the next crya. But these people, just after his passing away they began to fight, who shall be crya. That is the failure. They never thought, Why Guru Mahrja gave us instruction so many things, why he did not say that this man should be crya? They wanted to create artificially somebody crya and everything failed. They did not consider even with common sense that if Guru Mahrja wanted to appoint somebody as crya, why did he not say? He said so many things, and this point he missed? The real point? And they insist upon it. (Room conversation Aug 16, 1976, Bombay) Particularly important in this context is Srila Prabhupadas statement: They did not consider even with common sense that if Guru Mahrja wanted to appoint somebody as crya, why did he not say? He said so many things, and this point he missed? The real point? And they insist upon it. In yet another purport to Chaitanya Charitamrita verse, Srila Prabhupada writes: One must judge every action by its result. The members of the self-appointed cryas party who occupied the property of the Gauya Maha are satisfied, but they could make no progress in preaching. (Chaitanya Charitamrita, di 12.8 purport) It is to be noted here that Srila Prabhupada is describing the Gaudiya Mutt situation with the words: self-appointed acharyas. Fact 5: The disciples of Srila Prabhupada were very ambitious to become Gurus and Srila Prabhupada was conscious of this: As early as 1967, Srila Prabhupada wrote this about his first sannyasi disciple: Kirtanananda was awarded the position of a Sannyasi because he wanted it although I could understand it that he wanted to be a spiritual master himself. (Srila Prabhupada letter October 27th, 1967) During the brief eleven year period of founding and growing of ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada encountered again and again his disciples trying to become Spiritual Master, the most honored position in the society. HG Bhurijana Dasa writes in his book, My Glorious Master: VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page5Prabhupada began criticizing his disciple, Gaurasundara, and his anger was as intense as the monsoon rains." He wants to be guru, but he is not qualified. All of them, they want to be guru without qualification and they will fall victim to sex life." Even a few months before Srila Prabhupadas disappearance, one of his senior GBC man and sannyasi was trying to become a spiritual master: Prabhupda:.... People complained against Hasadta. Did you know that? Tamla Ka: Im not sure of the particular incidences, but Ive heard general... Prabhupda: In Germany. In Germany. Tamla Ka: The devotees there. Prabhupda: So many complaints. Tamla Ka: Therefore change is good. Prabhupda: No, you become guru, but you must be qualified first of all. Then you become. Tamla Ka: Oh, that kind of complaint was there. Prabhupda: Did you know that? Tamla Ka: Yeah, I heard that, yeah. Prabhupda: What is the use of producing some rascal guru? Tamla Ka: Well, I have studied myself and all of your disciples, and its clear fact that we are all conditioned souls, so we cannot be guru. Maybe one day it may be possible... Prabhupda: Hm. Tamla Ka:...but not now. Prabhupda: Yes. I shall choose some guru. I shall say, Now you become crya. You become authorized. I am waiting for that. You become all crya. I retire completely. But the training must be complete. (Room conversation, April 22, 1977, Bombay) Fact 6: Srila Prabhupada was very meticulous in his working and had deep concern for his institution, ISKCON: There is abundant testimonies from disciples who witnessed the meticulous working of Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupda was meticulous. He put on his Vaiava tilaka that way, artistically and methodically performing each function. He used his pen that way also. He took it out of his pen box, used it, and then returned it to the box on his desk. Prabhupda warned his servants never to touch anything or move anything on his desk. His book writing was also like that. His standard was that each and every word out of tens of thousands of words from thousands of verses must have its own synonym. Prabhupda had a limited time for writing the Bhgavatam every day, yet he never diminished his standard that each word gets its own synonym. Then he always gave the English translation, and then a purport. Whenever he saw the editors or publishers failing in this meticulous standard, he became very upset. (Recollections by HH Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami, Secretary to Srila Prabhupada) VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page6Another devotee who served as his secretary also recalls: Working in the capacity of rla Prabhupdas secretary during his visit to South Africa, I would read the letters addressed to him and type out his reply for signing. rla Prabhupda was very meticulous about his correspondence. He read all his mail and gave a reply to almost every letter he received. He was always giving guidance and encouragement. He read each and every one of his letters prior to signing them, making corrections or additions. (Recollections by Pusta Krishna Das, Secretary of Srila Prabhupada) Srila Prabhupada exhibited such concern for the institution ISKCON that he founded. Srila Prabhupada had witnessed the decline and failure of the Gaudiya Mutt institution. Would he leave the matter concerning the succession of Acharya in ISKCON without clarity? Let us take a look at all these facts read together: Fact 1: Secret of success in spiritual life is to serve the instructions of the spiritual master as ones life and soul and never deviate. Fact 2: Authorization is essential to become Spiritual Master. Fact 3: Srila Prabhupada did not authorize or appoint any of his disciples to become Spiritual Master or Diksha Guru after his disappearance. Fact 4: Srila Prabhupada describes the history of Gaudiya Mutt and analyzes the cause of its decline to be deviating from the spiritual masters instruction on successor acharya. Fact 5: The disciples of Srila Prabhupada were very ambitious to become Gurus and Srila Prabhupada was conscious of this: Fact 6: Srila Prabhupada was very meticulous in his working and had deep concern for his institution, ISKCON. It is important to see what the position of the GBC is as expressed by one of its leading voices, HG Ravindra Svarupa Dasa, in this article officially published: There is a failure to appreciate the problem Srila Prabhupada faced in his last days. We can be sure that he knew his own disciples better than they knew themselves; he had no illusions about their spiritual qualification. Yet they were pressing for a selection of successor gurus, the ultimate position for the ambitious. Hamsadutta and Kirtanananda had already been rebuked by Srila Prabhupada for receiving guru-puja in the presence of the spiritual master, a serious transgression. Without any indication from Srila Prabhupada in this manner, there would have been chaos. Yet Srila Prabhupada clearly did not want to give his sanction to unfit people, a spiritual error. He therefore selected them without endorsement. In response to the question of initiation after departure, Srila Prabhupada gave a list of 'officiating gurus', designating them in an indirect or oblique manner. He expected them to become 'regular gurus' in the future, but there was no 'hand-picking of successors', no laying of hands and anointing with oil, no transfer of power to some special and exclusive group. Srila Prabhupada also knew that some, like Kirtanananda, would initiate with or without his sanction, so he named them. If he had not, there would likely have been a schism in 1978 instead of 1987. I feel that Srila Prabhupada's solution was brilliant, the best that could have been done under the circumstances. The result would depend on Krsna. (Cleaning House Cleaning Hearts by HG Ravindra Svarupa Dasa) It is to be noted in this article is the reasoning: He therefore selected them without endorsement. In response to the question of initiation after departure, Srila Prabhupada gave a list of 'officiating gurus', VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page7designating them in an indirect or oblique manner. He expected them to become 'regular gurus' in the future, On such an important matter as initiation in the future in ISKCON, which had caused the failure of Gaudiya Mutt, which Srila Prabhupada had witnessed over decades, would Srila Prabhupada leave the matter nebulous as mentioned here? It is surprising that on such an important matter of the Spiritual Master or Guru in ISKCON, the most important principle of following the orders of the spiritual master and not deviating is not being honoured. Srila Prabhupada, please bless us that we dont become insensitive to your instructions on this matter or any other matter. Your humble servant, Chanchalapathi Dasa, Senior Vice President, ISKCON Bangalore Madhu Pandit Dasa Dear Srila Prabhupada, Please accept my most respectful obeisances on this most auspicious Vyasa Puja celebration of 2012. All glories to Your Divine Grace. Srila Prabhupada, you are a very dear and most confidential servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krishna, empowered to distribute the mercy of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to the population of the modern world. Your mission is not limited to your life time. Your manifest lila in the physical body that you exhibited in this world is only the first chapter of your mission. Many more chapters are yet to unfold in the decades and centuries to come. The world is yet to recognize the full glory of your mission founded and spiritually powered by you always as its Acharya. You instructed that wherever the name of your mission is mentioned, to always add Founder-Acharya meaning you are The Founder and The Acharya. Not Purva-Acharya of the disciplic succession. During your physical presence and after your physical departure, your transcendental power of touching the conditioned souls through your vani- written and spoken words- has been the greatest factor in transforming millions of hearts. Your vani has been spiritually frozen in time by modern technology of printed books and electronic media. It is available for any sincere person to simply apply the spiritual fire in the form of sincere enquiry and service of Absolute Truth, and the vani will melt and start vibrating once again, ever fresh, with exactly the same spirit and energy that you spoke those words during your pastimes in your physical body. In one sense your followers today are more fortunate due to easy access to your transcendental words. This is especially made possible by modern technology. We can see that the real purpose of these advances in technology has been masterminded by Lord Chaitanya, for propagating the Krishna Consciousness Movement. Your pastimes with countless conditioned souls of this world through your vani is your continued service in this world to Lord Chaitanya, to deliver the conditioned souls by distributing the Holy Name and transcendental knowledge, through the vessel of the organization that Your Divine Grace founded. Thus you are active even now and will continue to be active in the midst of humanity for centuries to come, beyond the limits of time and space, touching millions of lives of VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page8those who accept Your Divine Grace as their spiritual master. Those who are in touch with your vani are in touch with you every day, and you are personally guiding all such souls. Only the ignorant can think that there is any change in the intensity of your service to the Lord on this earth after November 1977. Your Divine Grace is present with us in no lesser way than you were present for the people of this earth before November 1977. Testimonials of these direct reciprocations are countless, my own life being one such, and we keep hearing more and more testimonials all the time. Unfortunately Maya has doubtlessly intervened to retard the growth of this transcendental movement by entering the minds of the Governing Body Commission (GBC) in the year 1978. There was no need to change anything in ISKCON after Your Divine Grace left your physical body. Yet the GBC thought that the reins of the organization had to be taken over by them as anointed spiritual successors rather than continuing as executors of your directions. In 1975 GBC passed a resolution defining GBC as Srila Prabhupadas executors : Resolved: The GBC (Governing Body Commission) has been established by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to represent Him in carrying out the responsibility of managing the International Society for Krishna Consciousness of which He is the Founder-Acarya and supreme authority. The GBC accepts as its life and soul His divine instructions and recognises that it is completely dependent on His mercy in all respects. The GBC has no other function or purpose other than to execute the instructions so kindly given by His Divine Grace and preserve and spread His Teachings to the world in their pure form. (Definition of GBC, Resolution 1, GBC minutes 1975) The mandate to the GBC, as is seen clearly from the above, was only to be the executors of the instructions/ directions of Your Divine Grace, who was to remain the Supreme Authority in ISKCON for all times, and not for them to become successors of Your Divine Grace. Unfortunately GBC decided that there had to be change in the system/management of initiation in ISKCON, though the Supreme Authority of ISKCON, Your Divine Grace, had not even hinted at anything to that effect. Of all the changes that the GBC made post-1977, the most damaging one was with regard to this- initiations in ISKCON. Why did it have to change when the system set up by Your Divine Grace was running well without involvement of your physical role in any way well before your departure? Your Divine Graces delegation of the formal aspects of initiation did not happen all of a sudden. You planned it right from the beginning. First you delegated conducting the initiation fire sacrifice to the Temple Presidents. Then, even as early as 1970 you began reducing further your physical role in initiation by directing some senior devotees to chant on the mala on your behalf. Bombay 4 January, 1973 73-01-04 My Dear Revatinandana, Please accept my blessings. Just now I have received some more requests for giving first initiation from Dhananjaya, and now I am receiving weekly not less than ten to fifteen such requests from new students. So it is becoming very expensive to send so many sets of beads such long distance, and it has become little bothersome for me also, so I think now you may be appointed by me to give first initiations VyasaPuja2012 ISKCON,Bangalore Page9to new disciples by chanting on their beads on my behalf. In America Kirtanananda Swami is doing that. So now if there are two of you that will give me great relief. Kirtanananda will chant on the beads for new devotees in America, Canada, like that, you can chant on the beads for the European continent new disciples. They shall, of course, still be considered as my disciples, not that they shall become your disciples, but you will be empowered by me to chant their beads and that is the same effect of binding master and disciple as if I were personally chanting. Thus, only name giving was retained by Your Divine Grace as on May 1977. On May 1977 even that role of giving the spiritual name was delegated to some disciples and whom you asked to act as Officiating Acharyas. It is now an undisputed fact on record that when the GBC came to you in May 1977 and asked how first and second initiation would go on, especially when you are no longer present with us, your immediate reply was, I will soon recommend some of you to act as Officiating Acharyas. You did not even say you would appoint Officiating Acharyas. Rather you said the persons whom you would appoint would act as Officiating Acharyas. Officiating Acharya is not the title you gave to those whom you named for giving initiation, it was just a description of their institutional function. The title of these officiators of the Acharya for initiation, if any, was Representative of Acharya. The direct English meaning of these words act as Officiating Acharya, is that these persons will officiate for the Acharya in the matter of delivering the initiation of Your Divine Grace. Due to over stressing the physicality of the spiritual master over his vani or words, and due to so many other reasons of their own, the GBC took a wrong step in the matter of initiation of future devotees by introducing new speculations instead of continuing what was going on without your physical role. All this, in the name of following tradition. ISKCON has surely followed the wrong tradition of infighting after the Acharyas physical departure on who should take his place! Again in your last Will you said: The system of management will continue as it is now and there is no need of any change. (Srila Prabhupadas Declaration of Will, 4th June, 1977) Yet the GBC dared to change- and this change has taken a huge toll in the growth of the movement.
