Reuniting lost pets with theirowners is nothing new for theVoorhees Animal Orphanage. This story, however, ends with achance surrender that led theVAO to facilitate an extraordi-

nary reunion more than 100 milesaway, finally resolving a stolendog report issued two years priorin the Bronx, and demonstratingthe immeasurable value of mi-crochipping pets.

Rihanna, a unique white boxermix, was stolen from her hometwo years ago, and after reportingthe incident, her owners nevergave up hope.

Yet they were astonished andincredibly emotional to receive aphone call from Laurie Ballard,VAO kennel manager, saying she

had their beloved Rihanna safe inher care…in a different state. This dog's journey has been onefor the record books, and all thepieces may never be known.

After two VAO employeesdrove Rihanna on her homewardbound ride this weekend, it cannow be said the happy ending herowners may have been beginningto doubt has indeed come.

Rihanna came to the VAO re-

cently after being found in one of the 15 Camden County municipal-ities the VAO serves. A scan of the newly arrived dog's mi-crochip yielded a New York ad-dress.

Usually, when a chip shows inanother state, it means the own-ers never updated it when theymoved, or the animal has newowners who never registeredtheir information.

Yet when Ballard called thephone number registered to themicrochip, the scale of events

began to unfold. A stolen dog re-ported two years ago, the case stillactive and unresolved. This is anincredible situation where themicrochip details, having re-mained current, led a stolen dogback to her owners.

The entire VAO communityrallied around Rihanna and theopportunity to connect her to her

long lost family. Staff and volun-teers sprung into action to raisethe funds needed for the door-to-door transport.

Rihanna’s story reaffirms theimportance of local shelters andstresses the importance of not

just microchipping pets but en-suring that the registered infor-

mation remains current. This iswhy every single animal the VAOadopts out is not just spayed orneutered and vaccinated, but alsomicrochipped.

The Voorhees Animal Orphan-age just kicked off a capital cam-paign for a much-needed new fa-cility to continue serving thecommunity in this way, and tohouse its 1,000 orphaned cats anddogs each year. arch 20. Eleven more days. Itcan’t come soon enough. Of-ficially, that’s the start of

spring. Whether Mother Natureagrees, though, is anyone’s guess atthis point. Early forecasts show shewill be good to us, but how much can

we actually rely on forecasts?Spring is what we all need. We need

a nice stroll downtown, in the park oron the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, toget us out of the doldrum into whichwinter plunges us every year, no mat-ter how mild or extreme is.

We got lucky this winter, with justone major snowstorm that crippled usfor a week or so. It’s been bitter cold attimes, too, as any winter is, and we gota sprinkling of wet weather last week.

But, hey, it’s in the 70s this week!No matter how bad it is, winter af-

fects all of our moods, and it affectsour bottom lines, too.

We’ll most likely be paying more intaxes, in some way, at some level, forpothole repairs and salt purchases.

Snow and cold weather affects localbusinesses as well, especially retailshops. Bad weather keeps patrons in-

side. The arrival of spring weather ona consistent basis will hopefully turnthat around, and quickly.

Cold weather keeps people in themindset of “no end in sight,” and pre-vents many from taking day trips toour state’s wonderful good-weather

spots, or from planning future trips, aswell.

In a little more than 60 days, the offi-cial start of the summer beach seasonwill be here. Does that even soundright?

The good news is that it started towarm up this week. Spring really doeslook like it’s right around the corner.Let’s hope Mother Nature cooperatesand doesn’t reverse the tide back towinter. Please spare us!

    in our opinion

Hello, spring, are you here ye t?Our moods, our businesses, our livelihood s depend on your arrival

Your thoughtsWhat are you most looking forward to thisspring? While you are out and aboutenjoying what hopefully will be beautifulweather, send us the photos you takealong the way, and we’ll be happy to sharethem with the rest of the town.

vivors, caregivers and anyoneelse affected by the disease whoall come together to continuouslywalk laps around a track to sym-bolize how fighting cancer is sim-ilar to a relay race where every-one has a part to play.

During the Relay events, par-ticipants and their team mem-bers usually set up miniaturecampsites where they can relax, get to know the other teams, enjoy food, play music and even

sell items or snacks to raise moremoney for the ACS.Ryan Legato, a member of the

Cherry Hill-Voorhees Relay lead-ership team, described Relayevents as ways to bring membersof the community together for afun event while also shining aspotlight on the fight against allforms of cancer.

“There are a lot of people whodon’t get to experience a walk for

just their type of cancer and sothis is for them,” Legato said.

Leadership team member andcancer survivor Jeanette Golden, who was one of the mainfounders of the Voorhees Relayseveral years ago before the eventalso covered Cherry Hill, said shehas been participating in RelayFor Life for nearly 20 years.

Now that the Cherry Hill-Voorhees event is more estab-lished, this year Golden said shehoped to get more kids and stu-dents involved with the cause, es-

pecially those who have familymembers who were affected bycancer.

“These kids need an outlet andthis is a great outlet for them tofeel like they’re doing something

… these kids just want so badly tomake a difference in the lives of people with cancer,” Golden said.

Legato also agreed that Relaywas a great way for kids to feelmore empowered in the fightagainst cancer.

“Pretty much everybody hassomeone in their life, either a rel-ative or a friend or a friend’s rela-tive that has been affected, so re-ally it’s everyone’s problem, which makes it a worthwhilecause,” Legato said.

Changes to this year’s Relay in-clude a move to new location atBeck Middle School in CherryHill, and the event will also take

place about one month earlier, onMay 21, to provide for cooler tem-peratures.

The event will also have slight-

ly longer hours than last year, with this year’s Relay set to lastfrom 2 to 11 p.m.

For those who have never par-ticipated in Relay before, Goldensaid the fundraising and effort iswell worth it.

“I’ve gotten way more than I’vegiven, so the more you give of yourself in any position, themore you get in return,” Goldensaid.
