17 to 31 Jauary 2018

The Volvo Ocean Race is an eight month around-the-world sailing race that has been running since 1973 and is considered one of the toughest sport competitions in the world.

For weeks at a time, the sailors endure conditions ranging from freezing cold to searing heat, while waves constantly slam the boat. All the while, they are under relentless pressure to perform at their peak.

The boats in the race are ten storeys high and sixty five feet long and are completely identical so the competition is considered one of strategy and crew performance rather than design.

There are eight boats in the race and they are typically backed by a corporate sponsor with the relevant team representing the nationality of that sponsor. For the first time ever, there will be a Hong Kong represented boat called Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag. There are seven to eleven sailors on each boat depending on the gender ratio plus an on board reporter who captures content around the clock.

The race starts in Spain on Sunday 22 October and the race is divided into sections or ‘legs’, stopping at twelve cities during the course of the race and for the first time in the event’s history, the boats will visit Hong Kong. The Race Festival will start on Wednesday 17th January 2018 and the eight boats are expected to arrive in Victoria Harbour on Saturday 20th January and will depart Hong Kong for New Zealand on Wednesday 7th February. A Victoria Harbour race and a race around Hong Kong Island will take place along with a World Race Festival during the boat’s visit.
