VOLUNTEER 2016 RYDER CUP NEWSLETTER I APRIL, 2016 I EDITION 3 1 FROM THE GENERAL CHAIR Welcome to the April volunteer newsletter! We thought it would be a good opportunity to reflect on Hazeltine’s relationship with the PGA of America and to feature some history of the PGA during this, the organizations’ Centennial celebration year. While many people may think that the 2002 PGA Championship was Hazeltine’s first PGA event, it was actually the 1980 PGA Grand Slam of Golf won by Lanny Wadkins over fellow 1980 major winners Hale Irwin, David Graham and Fuzzy Zoeller. After nearly two decades, the PGA returned to Hazeltine for the 2002 PGA Championship won by Rich Beem. That was followed by the 2009 PGA Championship won by Y.E. Yang. Very soon, we’ll all be participating in the crown jewel of PGA golf events, the 2016 Ryder Cup. Not only is the PGA of America responsible for giving all of us this wonderful opportunity but I would venture to guess there isn’t a single volunteer out there who hasn’t had contact with a PGA professional at some point during his or her life as a golfer or fan. More than 28,000 PGA professionals across the country are dedicated to promoting the game of golf through instruction and facility management. Without them, there would be no Ryder Cup for us to enjoy less than six months from now. We hope you enjoy the article on the history of the PGA of America and don’t hesitate to thank the next PGA professional you meet for everything he or she does for the game of golf. FROM THE GENERAL CHAIRWelcome to the April volunteer newsletter!

PGA OF AMERICAThe PGA of America’s origin can be traced to January 17, 1916, when a group of New York area golf professionals, accompanied by several prominent amateur golfers, attended a luncheon hosted by department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker at his Taplow Club in New York City. The purpose of the gathering was to discuss forming a national organization, which would promote interest in the game of golf and help elevate the vocation of the golf professional.

Wanamaker, who viewed the public’s growing enthusiasm for golf as the beginning of a national trend, promoted the association idea to help accelerate the growth of the game. Little did Wanamaker or his guests realize that they were laying the groundwork for what would become the world’s largest working sports organization.

This first order of business was to establish the organization’s objectives that continue to be prominent in the mission today, “to serve our Members and grow the game.” On April 10, 1916, 35 charter members created The Professional Golfers’ Association of America in New York City.

The very first PGA championship was held in October of 1916 in Bronxville, NY. In May 1920, the first issue of The Professional Golfer of America was published. The magazine was renamed PGA Magazine in 1977, and today is America’s oldest continuous golf monthly publication. The Ryder Cup was inaugurated in 1927

with a 9 1/2 to 2/12 U.S. victory at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Mass. In 1933, George Jacobus rose from the caddie ranks to become the first American-born president of the PGA of America.

As the PGA grew in numbers, there was no distinction between club and touring professionals. In 1968, PGA tournament players, broke away from the Association to form a Tournament Players Division and acquire more control of the tournament schedule. In 1975, this division was renamed the PGA Tour. Today, the PGA Tour is headquartered in Ponte Vedra, Florida. The PGA Tour and The PGA of America maintain a close working relationship and most professional golfers maintain dual membership in the organizations.

Currently, the PGA of American headquarters is located on a 2,300-acre complex known today as PGA National. The PGA of America conducts more than 30 tournaments for its members and apprentices including the Ryder Cup, the PGA Championship, The Senior PGA Championship, and the Women’s PGA Championship. Through a network of 41 Section Offices, the Association maintains a total commitment to the PGA Professional.

As we embrace the 100 year centennial and a historic year for the Ryder Cup 2016, we are reminded of the long traditions of the PGA of America. The PGA’s Centennial campaign features a spotlight of public service announcements where members can post a video, image or message to thank a PGA Professional who helped them enjoy the game. To see or join in on the conversations go to ThxPGAPro.com.
