EASTERN NEW MEXICO has every right to be miffed afterbeing bypassed for football postseason play. The Greyhounds ended the season with an 8-2 record and inthird place in the Lone Star Conference standings. The top two teams, Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce, were selected for the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Eastern would have shared the conference title had they beatenMidwestern State in the season finale. They were defeated, 56-43.
Eastern whipped Angelo State and Tarleton State, and finishedin front of them in the final standings, yet the Rams and Texanswere selected for bowl play. The Heart of Texas Bowl selected Angelo State, which was 6-4,and the Rams will play Washburn (Kan.), which has a 6-5 recordand is in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Corsicana Bowl, in its first year, went with Tarleton and its6-5 record. Central Oklahoma, 7-4 for the year and also in theMIAA, will be the Texans’ opponent.
Eastern got a really bad deal and it has a right to be upset at theselection committees for those two bowls.
THE LIVE UNITED Bowl in Texarkana, Ark., bypassed theLone Star Conference this season and has teams from the GreatAmerican Conference and MIAA.
Neither selection has a record as good as Eastern.Arkansas Tech of the Great American Conference will take on
Pittsburg (Kan.) State in the Dec. 2 matchup.Tech is 8-3 and Pitt State is 7-4.The Javelinas won the Live United Bowl championship last
December.
NCAA DIVISION II football playoff notes:…It’s unusual to root for any Lone Star Conference team but
the Javelinas. An exception comes with the postseason playoffs. It is a benefit for the LSC and the Javelinas to have the leaguerepresentatives win in these games. It is prestigious for the LSC to have its representatives make agood showing. It’ll show in future rankings and over rating inNCAA Division II.
Last weekend was a good one for the two LSC teams in theplayoffs. Midwestern State defeated Sioux Falls (S.D.) and TexasA&M-Commerce beat Winona (Minn.) State. They now compete in the national quarterfinals.
…An interesting pairing this week will be the one betweenCommerce and regional top-ranked Central Washington.
The game will be in Ellensburg, Wash. Central went 11-0 during the regulation season and had anopening round bye in the postseason playoffs last week as the No. 1seed. The Javelinas opened with the Wildcats in Kingsville and willbe playing the team in the season opener next season in Ellensburg. Having seen both teams play this year, I think the Lions will be

difficult to beat, even in the Great Northwest.…Javelina head football coach Daren Wilkinson was the NCAA
representative at the Midwestern State-Sioux Falls (S.D.) game lastweekend in Wichita Falls. Wilkinson is on the NCAA Division II Football Committee andthe national organization assigns members of the committee torepresent it at the playoff games. He will be likely sent to one again this week even though thereisn’t an LSC team playing at home. ….Of the 12 first round games played in the Division IIplayoffs last weekend, six saw upsets. This has to be somewhat of an embarrassment to the rankingscommittee. When the first of the NCAA rankings come out, late inthe season, fans usually question the validity of the polls. After a weekend such as the last, these fans get an opportunityto feed crow to those rankers.
JAVELINA STADIUM WILL have the first of its high schoolplayoff games this weekend when Calallen and Mercedes meetFriday afternoon. It should draw a huge crowd. Calallen is only 30 minutes away and is one of the top teams inthe state with an 11-0 record. Mercedes is 9-2 for the year. It’s good to have the South Texas teams coming to campuswhether it be for football, basketball, track and field, baseball orsoftball.
JAVELINAS ARE PLAYING a big role in the high schoolfootball playoff pictures in the San Antonio area. In one of the biggest games last week, San Antonio Reaganplayed Buda Hays. Reagan won by a point. Head coach of the Reagan team is Lyndon Hamilton and headcoach at Hays is Neal LaHue. Both are Javelinas and have been onthe same high school coaching staff. Reagan, 9-2 for the year, will now face San Antonio O’Connor, which is 11-0 and the No. 1-ranked Class 6A team in the SanAntonio area. O’Connor is coached by David Malesky, another Javelina. The winner of the O’Connor-Reagan game will play the winnerof the McAllen-San Benito game the following weekend. There isn’t a better locale for that game than Javelina Stadium.
