Lions —

On June 29th, I was “virtually” sworn in as

Governor of District 1J and took office on July 1st,

2020. So, hi from your Governor.

I am humbled by your decision to allow me to

lead the District this year, but let’s be clear, I am

NOT the important one here, you are. This is

YOUR district; you’re just letting me lead it for a year. I will

have some responsibility for the success or failure of our Dis-

trict this year, but you will be the ones deciding our future.

Will we continue to be leaders in serving our communities,

attracting members, building strong clubs? That is in your

hands. I will be there to help in any way I can and will be avail-

able to work any project or function you have. The entire lead-

ership team will provide all the aid it can. You have only to ask.

Please contact me at any time for anything I can help with. I

can be reached at: 630 217 4904 or [email protected].

Let me know when your clubs are meeting, in person or

electronically, so that I can visit your club, listen to you what

you do, your ideas and suggestions.

Once again thank you for allowing me to be your Governor, I

will do the best I can and with your help and support we WILL

have a good year.

At the joint cabinet meeting held on June 27th, some decisions

were approved by the cabinet. We are going to have an

electronic directory! Now we can get the directory

to the clubs earlier and make changes easier than

with a paper directory and it can be made available

to a larger group of people. Plus, it saves the District

money.

Speaking of money, the Cabinet approved a motion

to make the 1st half of the district dues voluntary.

The clubs can pay that portion, or not as they decide, taking

their financial position into account. This is District dues

ONLY. International dues still must be paid, but payment can

be delayed until December.

State dues also are required to be paid, but at the July 1,

2020 Council of Governors meeting, the council voted to

follow the policy adopted by Lions Clubs International. The

date on which the State dues will be in arrears has been

extended to November 1, 2020.

Very Quietly, This Lion Year Has Begun . . . I start my Year as First Vice District Governor in a time that none of us could have

predicted.

However, there are some things that remain constant: we must all work together,

we must all reach out to our communities, and we must all be willing to change as

the world around us continues to change. I am confident that your new District

Leadership Team is ready to assist every club and every Lion be the best that you

can be in challenging times.

**Save some time - July 25 — Officers Training to be presented virtually. It

will be a resource for new officers and seasoned officers alike. Much has changed

and we all need to keep up. Each position will be a separate module.

We are planning to start Presidents Training at 9:00 AM, Treasurers at 10:30 AM

and Secretaries at 12:30 PM. You may attend any or all sections as needed.

Watch for more information and sign up emails. You may also email your interest

to me so that we can send you the sign on codes.

Let’s have a great year!

Lion Lori Chassee, 1st Vice District Governor

Global Leadership Team [email protected]

Welcome to July We are starting our Lions year with no surprises. We know who the leadership is

going to be, and we know we have interesting challenges ahead of us. The way we

make it through the challenges is with strong leadership and great members.

My goal is to focus on helping you have those great members and more members

at the end of the year. Let us look at your members right now. Are they great?

How do we get them to be great? If they are great already, you are halfway there.

But if they are not, how do we get them to be?

The simple idea is to keep your membership engaged so they are interested and

retained. Do your members have projects that they are planning and going to

execute? There are all kinds of activities we can get involved with. Some are right

in front of us, while others are more difficult to find.

Now we need to complete the circle. To keep our members engaged, we need to

keep them informed. If you are physically meeting, great. Have some good

meetings. If you are only meeting electronically, try and get small groups together

and start those bonds again. If you do not meet for the summer, it might be time

to start a newsletter or some other form of communication. I mentioned earlier in

the year about a phone tree, keep the branches growing. Check up on each other

and talk about Lions.

Be safe and stay strong,

A New Year — In These Strange Times We do not have a complete report of activities for the past year as we

start this new Lions year. Last report showed 58% of the clubs partici-

pated in Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service. We appear to

almost be equaling the previous year’s total. The actual figure will

appear in the next report to you.

Each dollar of the nearly $40,000 that has been raised this year is an

important one to somebody. Somebody that was hungry, had diabetes

issues, did not have water or was facing childhood cancer. It meant

assistance during a national disaster. With those donations, large or

small, we assisted a Lions Club to provide an important local need.

I heard on a recent conference call about a couple of clubs that

received Lions Clubs International Foundation grants that were used

to help local companies in Michigan convert to making hand sanitizer.

Over four million dollars in grants have helped our Lions battle this

insidious virus that changed the world. You and I did that.

This past six months have been the strangest in my memory. Most of

you know that covers a long time. We have prevailed and maybe will

even excel.

On to the next year. I hope to hear from the other 42% of the clubs

this year to have 100% participation. I haven’t Zoomed yet, but I am

willing to try if your club is meeting that way.

If you would like the most up-to-date information on LCIF’s response

to COVID-19? Visit our designated page https://bit.ly/2Ulrnbc to learn

more about LCIF's response, how to apply for a grant and how to

support LCIF’s efforts. Grants must affect at least 100 individuals.

If you think you can spare something, you can go to the Lions Clubs

International site and make a donation, or drop a check in the mail to

me made out to LCIF.

Pat Hill Benefit in Elburn IL

Contributed by Elburn Lion Pam Hall, Co-Chair of Pat Hill Benefit

Back in March 2020, the Elburn Lions Club had already been working

for months behind the scenes organizing a benefit scheduled for April

2020 for local resident, Pat Hill. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak and

the need to shelter in place, everyone’s world changed.

As Lions, we needed to adapt so we could still accomplish our goal of

helping someone in need. We hoped for the best, rolled up our

sleeves and came up with new ways to raise money.

The Elburn and surrounding communities did not disappoint! Local

businesses stepped up and offered to be part of a carry-out fundraiser

in Elburn that lined the street with residents waiting patiently to pick

up their carry-outs. Cont. on p. 4 . . .

Governor John B. Wants Your Input

I am asking for your input. Here are some questions that I feel we

need to be considering. Please take some time to think about them,

discuss them with your club members, and share with me any

answers you come up with.

How do we serve? In these times of limited contact what kind of

service projects can we do?

How do we keep our members motivated and committed when they

are not meeting face to face or working service or fund raising

projects? What can we do to retain our members?

How do we raise funds for our clubs projects? What kind of fund

raisers can we hold?

How do we attract new members when we are not visible in our

communities? What can we do to attract new members?

Any answers submitted will be considered, fresh ideas are welcome

and needed. Yes, it is a challenging year, but a plan can make it less

of a challenge and more of an opportunity to strengthen our clubs.

Diabetes and Neuropathy

A painful truth about a common complication of diabetes.

Neuro=nerve — Pathy= sickness

Diabetic Neuropathy is a complication of diabetes that results in

damage to the nervous system. It is a progressive disease and

systems get worse overtime.

Symptoms

1) Weakness and nerve pain.

2) Cramping and muscle twitch.

3) Muscle or bone loss.

4) Loss of ankle reflexes, foot drop.

5) Changes in skin, hair and nails.

Types of Diabetic Neuropathy: There are 4 types:

1) Peripheral Neuropathy: This affects arms, hands, legs and feet, it’s

the most common form.

2) Autonomic Neuropathy: This occurs in the nerves that control

involuntary functions of the body, such as digestion, urination or

heart rate.

3) Proximal or Thoracic Neuropathy: This damages nerves along a

specific distribution such as chest wall or legs.

4) Focal or Mononeuropathy. This can affect any individual nerve.

Long-term pressure on a nerve due to swelling or injury can result in

mono neuropathy.

The symptoms of neuropathy depends on the nerve involved.

Affects of Neuropathy: It can affect the following:

* Sense of balance.

* Ability to go from sitting to standing.

* Heart rate.

* How fast you digest food.

* Pain in your hands and feet.

* The body’s ability to heal.

Treatment and Prevention

Nerve pain is one of the most common symptoms of diabetic neurop-

athy and our ability to treat this is limited.

Some common treatments involve physical therapy, surgery and

injections for increased nerve pressure. Intake of vitamin B12 and

walking is also a good treatment.

It is difficult to prevent nerve pain from diabetes and even harder to

treat the cause once it is already affecting somebody. The best form

of prevention is to control your blood glucose as much as possible

based on your physician’s instructions. Exercising and eating right are

always the right steps, so do your best to incorporate these activities

into your daily routine.

Diabetes is life — a life altering disease.

Pat Hill Benefit in Elburn IL (cont. from p. 3)

T-shirts were designed and sold showing Pat how much she means to

all of us. A 50/50 raffle was organized and tickets sold like crazy

bringing the total pot to close to $14,000.00!

Another carry-out fundraiser was hosted in the neighboring town of

Maple Park with great success as well. The final push was the first

ever, virtual fundraiser, that the Elburn Lions has ever hosted.

Businesses and residents had already donated raffle items and we

weren’t going to let the pandemic stop us from hosting this event.

Tickets were sold via the Elburn Lions website and by drop off orders

and the drawing of the raffle winners was announced live via

Facebook.

It was a busy few months, but worth all the planning, executing and

hard work! As Elburn Lions, we have learned a great deal and grown

into an even bigger and better club. We are very blessed to have such

a caring and giving community! Without everyone’s support, none of

us would succeed. THANK YOU to everyone for your donations and

support!

This weekend, we had the pleasure of presenting Pat Hill with the

final check from all the fundraising efforts of the Pat Hill Benefit. She

was quite surprised by the amount and very appreciative for all the

support she’s received. Please keep Pat in your thoughts and prayers

as she continues to receive treatments and struggle with her health.

The Bartlett Lions Club General Meetings and public events through August have been canceled or rescheduled due to concerns about the COVID-

19 virus – check our calendar for new dates. The Executive Board is currently using a phone/video conferencing solution for all Lions meetings.

Contact us via email, [email protected], for conferencing details. Come join us to help celebrate our 80th year of service.

The Batavia Lions Club Golf Outing has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. It is with regret that I have to inform you we have had to cancel

our golf outing for a second year in a row. Last year rain washed out the day. This year it’s COVID situation that has severely altered our plans. We

would have been able to play golf but would not have been allowed to gather afterwards for our banquet and post play activities. Hughes Creek

gave us some alternate dates but they did not fit in with the currently made plans of many of our potential participants. So, here we go again –

Lion Mike Minella

South Elgin Lions held a Curb-side Pick-Up Spaghetti Dinner Meals early this month. There were two serving times — Lunch from 11 AM to 2 PM

and Dinner from 4 to 8 PM. Buy three meals and get a 4th one free. Sounds like a good fundraiser!

Geneva Lions Club’s August 31, 2020 Luncheon Meeting will be at Sunset Community Center, 710 Western Avenue, Geneva, from 12 Noon to 1

PM. The speaker will be Andrew Kohn, O.D. – President, VOSH-Illinois, that’s Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity for those who don’t

know. They have lots of chapters in the State of Illinois.

The Villa Park Lions Club has great news — “we can now start meeting again at Hi-View Restaurant, but must wear a mask!” All meetings are at

noon. These dates are GOG unless something happens with Covid-19. It will be nice to see everyone again and to catch up. Lion Rich Hamlin will

be at the helm when we meet. He will be president effective July 1st, 2020. Thanks to Lion Sean for his guidance and service this pastyear. Oh,

what a year. Many of you remember former Lion Russ Coomans. Russ and Norma just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. You don’t hear

that too often these days. Congrats to the newly weds!

Glen Ellyn Lions Club held a Drive-By Food Drive for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry in mid-June.

Wheaton Lions Club held an outdoor meeting in Adams Park in Wheaton — it was the first “in-person meeting” in the last four months. Gover-

nor Lion John Barsanti was invited and he presented a George Lazansky Awards to member, Lion Jeff Kincaid. (see pic on p. ) He also installed the

new Wheaton Lions Club Board for Lion Year 2020-2021. Lions are planning for a Charity Golf Outing in August. There will be a Silent Auction at

this event. They’ve even created a GO FUND ME site for the event!

Wit & Wisdom . . . “The U.S. is going in the wrong direction with the coronavirus surging badly enough – just as schools and .colleges are wrestling with

how to safely reopen. With about 40,000 new cases being reported a day, I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day

if this does not turn around. We’ve got to get the message out that we are all in this together, by wearing masks in public, and

keeping out of crowds.” -- Dr. Anthony Fauci, Government Top Infectious Disease Expert

“Numerous new studies point to the value of wearing masks in minimizing the transmission of the novel coronavirus, which is the key

to our eventual return to life as we knew it. And those who have trivialized and politicized the act need to be reminded, urged,

cajoled and if necessary, shamed until they mask up in public.” -- Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune columnist

“A banker once asked Mother Theresa for her business card. She handed him a little card which read:

The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith.

The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service.

The fruit of service is peace.

As Elgin Lions Club starts the new Lion Year, it has reported a donation of $400 to Adult Low Vision and $500 to Leader Dogs for the Blind for its

sponsor puppy, Cheyenne, a black lab. The 2020 Fox Trot did better than expected — 210 runners were signed up and another 83 runners signed

up after the race went “virtual.” The Lions will be one of the main hosts of the race next year and they hope to move back to the traditional

format and the date will be Father’s Day, June 13, 2021. The club recently gave out the Elgin Lions Club Foundation Memorial Scholarship to a

Larkin High School student. The club provided a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior that plans to attend a university, college, or trade school.

This year’s winner was from Larkin High School. Charity Poker events will be held on July 18 & August 22.

Even though Crystal Lake Lions Club has participated in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Health Fair for ten years, due to the Coronavirus pandem-

ic this year, the event has been cancelled. The club’s Golf Outing will be on Monday, August 31st at Boone Creek in McHenry. Local eye care cost

the club close to $233 and scholarships were $2,000 this year. The club won $250 from the Sight & Sound Raffle!!

Huntley Area Lions Club has decided to hold a Tootsie Pop Day in the Huntley area on July 24 & 25, since Tootsie Pop Day normally is held on May

1 & 2 and it was delayed this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The club participated in a virtual Chamber After Hours so that all attendees

could learn about the Huntley Area Lions Club. A $1,000 scholarship was presented to a graduating high school senior. Best news of the month —

the club was able to see the creation of a Huntley High School Leo Club with 20 members!

Dundee Township Lions Club is sponsoring a Poster Contest, “We Are In This Together,” for students ages 10-14 in their community.

Naperville Noon Lions Club made lots of End Of The Year Awards (see all of them on p. 3). The club is having Zoom meetings on the 2nd and 4th

Tuesdays of the month going forward. Braconi’s will allow up to 10 members to have lunch on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month. Lion Paul

has agreed to secure a speaker for the 2nd Tuesday of the month and the 4th Tuesday will remain a business meeting. The Young Men’s Service

League has agreed to do glasses pickups at seven of our donation locations. An outdoor club meeting at Lion Bill Bleecker’s house will be held on

August 11th. Social distancing will be practiced at all meetings until things change otherwise.

Aurora Noon Lions held a “Moove the Milk” promotion in June to feed area residents. Lion Becky Dunnigan, Interfaith Food Pantry Outreach

Coordinator and her daughter handed out 130 gallons of milk, plus yogurt, butter and cheddar-cheese shreds. The club resumed in-person lunch-

eon meetings in mid-June at Luigi’s. The club held a Trivia Night fundraiser in early July to benefit the Marie Wilkinson and Aurora Interfaith Food

Pantries.

Last month, Westmont Lions Club donated 100 boxes of non-perishable food to People’s Resource Center in Westmont. Lions filled 420 bottles of

hand sanitizer to be donated along with face masks and hand gloves. Sponsored by Lion Rose, a donation of $100 was made to American Human

Association. Members served cooked food to two families in quarantine for one month. The club also sent money to three poor families in India

through Xoom.com; they work on daily wages and due to the lockdown had nothing to eat.

Lisle Lions Club made a one-time donation of $500 to a local resident to help with further educational support to pursue a degree in Osteopathic

Medicine at Midwestern University. Two $500 scholarships were given to graduating seniors. Each year these students remain in college and re-

apply, they will receive another $500, making the total scholarship worth $2,000. Two Lions are assisting a local resident who lost her job in mid-

May, by helping her file unemployment documents, etc. and taking her to a local food pantry. “In-person” meetings will start again in July.

Discussion has taken place about possible future fundraisers.

Lisle Ladies Lions Club Branch’s latest project is creating cards for older folks in a couple of nearby nursing homes as several know that they have

Lioness Clubs -- by Lion Sandy Williams

Island Lake Lioness Club recently awarded the Patricia Nebgen Island Lake Lioness Scholarship to three high school seniors each with a $2,000.00

scholarship. The club received many worthy applicants. Good luck to the three seniors! Thank you everyone for your continued support!

Between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2021, Lioness Clubs that decide to convert can have any number of members, and charter fees will be waived.

Lionesses who join in this time period will carry over their years of service and will be offered a credit,

allowing them to pay half International dues throughout the remainder of the program.

Hinckley Lions Club is sponsoring a Cruise Night on Saturday, July 25, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in downtown Hinckley. There is no entry

fee and there are no trophies. Participants are encouraged to visit several food establishments in Hinckley.

For 60 years, WE SERVE has been the motto of the Maple Park Lions Club. This year has been as challenging for those that do their best to raise

money to put right back in to the community. The Lions had to cancel their biggest fund raiser, Roses for Mother's Day. The annual Lions Share

has, at least for the time being, been canceled. The club has creative minds working on a way to pull off something that will adhere to safety

concerns. Scholarships were not awarded because participation was severely hindered. With the circumstances as they were, in May the club

was able to donate to Maple Parks’ Family fund knowing that this organization gives directly to Maple Park Families in need.

Somonauk Lions Club in June presented three scholarships to three graduates of Somonauk High School. The club also recently made a financial

contribution to Fox Valley Older Adults.

Elburn Lions Club, due to the pandemic, decided not to host the community’s fireworks display schedule for July 11. In June the club sponsored a

drive-through Mostaccioli Dinner. They served 230 meals. Due to COVID-19, the club has canceled Elburn Days 2020. The members’ efforts now

go into thinking about Elburn Days 2021 that will be on August 20‒22, 2021. The funds raised during Elburn Days go to not only charity but also

to maintain Elburn Lions Park. The club is discussing holding a smaller event on Sunday, August 23, 2020 that will be called “Pull for the Park”.

This event would feature a combination drive-thru or sit-down pulled pork dinner, plus the club would be selling its world-famous pull tabs. The

club is still holding the Annual Car Raffle ($20 per ticket) and Annual 50/50 Raffle ($5 per ticket).

Malta Lions Club is sponsoring the DeKalb County Community Gardens Grow Mobile on August 4.

Waterman Lions Club is hosting the DeKalb County Community Gardens Grow Mobile on July 7 at Waterman Lions Park The Antique Tractor

Show and Summerfest will be different this year. On July 18, there will be a tractor parade through the Village of Waterman, drive-through meals

at Lions Park, and fireworks in the evening.

District 1J Motorcycle Lions Club is hosting a Welcome Ride on Sunday, July 12 (sorry, your RSVP had to be in by July 3rd). Look on the club’s Fa-

cebook page for the next Ride.

Sandwich Lions completed a Scrap Workday mid-June and a Road Clean-Up at the end of June. No Cruise Nights will be held this year.
